Skullgirls is a 2D anime-style fighting game created in the U.S available for download on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. First of all, the anime aesthetic is very detailed and looks great. The backgrounds are all very detailed as well as the characters. The game hosts a unique variety of characters ranging from school girls, to Eldritch abominations, whose stories become loosely connected throughout the duration of the story mode. The story for each character tends to be quite short and several seemingly important aspects of the characters and their back-stories go unexplained. Also worth noting, is that each story is a what if, and none of the stories are concrete. These factors make the story quite lacking and even confusing at times. The sound in this game is great as well. The voice acting is good, as are the sound effects. Now, onto the game play. The game is by no means easy. Don't let the pretty characters distract you from the combat, because the combat can be quite merciless and if you aren't careful, you will find yourself at the knees of your opponent after a ridiculous combo. The controls take a while to get used to, and it would be a great idea to view the tutorial before diving into the game. Each character controls quite differently, so you won't be able to spam the same button commands for every character. This helps keep the game fresh in modes like the story mode where you will find yourself often fighting the same character as well as the same final boss. Despite the difficulty, it is manageable and should not discourage you from playing the game. (Note: The game also has adjustable difficulty settings) The game offers a story mode, and arcade mode, as well as a versus mode to play with your friends or to play online. It also comes with a tutorial mode, and a training mode to practice chaining long combos against an unmoving opponent, so there is plenty to do in the game to keep yourself entertained. This is definitely a great game to play with your friends, just to play by yourself, and the multiple difficulties allow you to crank up the difficulty and constantly keep yourself challenged. This game is definitely worth picking up if you enjoy a challenging fighting game, and you won't want to put down the controller once you get going.
