I have a hard time believing that Beer helps anything. I have drank enough beer to realize what it does to your head while you are under the influence of it

but from where i read, it was said you should only drink a little bit. Too much can be dangerous (and I think we ALL know that as a fact...)

Quite interesting, but still not going to start drinking alcohol xD I know lots of people on my age that drink and to me it seems like they are way less intelligent than what they were before they started.. but I guess they were stupid enough for actually starting to drink before they were old enough.

The seem stupid because they're drinking too much. It's only supposed to be a little. For an average middle-weight it would most likely be 2 beers. That's all it takes me to get into that state of mind.

That's kind of interesting. Personally, when I've got a buzz (illegally), I don't normally feel the urge to try and do things that require intelligence, but if it's proven to make you smarter, I know what I'm bringing to school next year.

Ok, I'll wait til I'm 25 or so to drink beer because it can damage your brain greatly from drinking beer at young age.

Cyro, you may not be considering that you drink as a factor. Generally an average weight person would probably get the effect with 1 beer. If you drink more often or are heavier/lighter that will have to be adjusted. But the one to two beer range would likely be where you would want..

Don't drink, don't really care to. And the title is misleading. As some have mentioned the alcohol would merely take the edge off and help you relax. A glass of wine would do the same thing.

"Alcohol's buzz might actually improve your problem-solving skills."

That statement is so wrong due to the fact that drunks can't solve anything whether they are tipsy or not, in fact they are creating more problems: a dui, car accident, unexpected babies, useless fights, intelligence of a 2 year old. More importantly, good luck problem solving the addiction of becoming an alcoholic.

This study is about the equivalent to saying cocain helps you stay awake. Its the wrong way to stay awake and drinking is the wrong way to solve problems.

"The study found that the drunks not only solved 40 percent more questions than their sober control group, they did so three and a half seconds faster as well"

According to their sobriety test results, they failed on every answer.

I completely agree with JigSaw. It really makes you wonder how much these people loved to drink in order to come up with this experiment at all. Talk about rationalizing your activities. lol

Seriously though, to counter JigSaw's observation... it is also quite possible that one person made a comment to another that they actually focused better when they drank while studying for college finals and the other one said "Really, so did I." (Because...ya know... frat boys drink) and they decided to check into this to see if it really did help or if it was just some crazy illusion.

This seems kind of far-fetched to me... I've seen drunk people, and they're not very smart while they're being it. Sure you could go and solve problems, but what are the chances that you would instead go and do something stupid and illegal? I'm not buying it.

Let's not take this the wrong way, though. I'm sure this may apply to having a couple beers, but I think getting drunk would be going too far.

molepr9 : No, of course not when you're drunk. When they say alcohol they mean something like only one or two beers, depending on your size. Not drinking until you throw up. It's right around when you first start getting a buzz and not much past that (from my experience). I've noticed I tend to focus more having just about two, and I actually feel more inclined to get things done.

For sure it does. I can't imagine how I pass through my entire chemical engineer career without it. Besides, every Friday night when I met my friends to drink beer, we have the most amazing solutions to everyday situations. Trust me. I'm an engineer!!!

I know I've expressed this sentiment before in other places on this site, but I feel it merits repeating here, as well. So here we go!

It is not a wise idea to place very much credibility or trust in these 'studies' that are carried out on a regular basis on any subject a bored college grad or career scientist can possibly conceive. I know that it is fun to imagine how some of their finding might impact one's life, but in then end, it all turn out to be complete bunk half the time. The rest of the time, they are just confirming something which is common knowledge to most people. In the case of this study, I already knew being a little drunk helps you think outside the box. However, you need to consider the negative effects that alcohol will have on your body. These out-weight any small amount of mental stimulation being buzzed might provide. In the end, this 'study' is just a case of a group of college student trying to justify getting sloshed on the weekends. 'Oh, no, Professor! We weren't drinking until we couldn't stand straight! We were stimulating our brains so we could study better!'

That brings me to my reason for saying you can't trust these studies. As the adage goes, 'opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.' This includes any given person that might like to perform a study on any given subject. No matter how unbiased someone might claim to be, they will always have a preferred outcome in mind at the outset of their study. And, as we all know, it is human nature that a person would want to be proven right. Ergo, there will always be that temptation to someone alter the outcome of the study. I'm not saying that every single person will give into the temptation, however the majority most definitely will. There is also the fact that anyone can find proof of anything, if they look hard enough and are willing to twist the meaning of something.

If you want further proof, all you have to do is look at the bevy of contradictory studies that claim the exact opposite of one another. There used to be studies that claimed smoking was healthy for you. Now, of course, all studies say that smoking is horrible for your health. There used to be studies that stated eggs and bread were good for you. Now eggs cause heart attacks and bread makes you fat. Hell, whether eggs are good or bad for you has changed numerous times over the last 50 years.

There is always a new 'study' with new 'findings' that claim they know the answer on how to improve one aspect of your life. In the end, all most of these people are trying to do is force their own opinions on you and using these 'studies' as a means to justify their end.
