While I think that's a cool idea, it doesn't feel right without the typical water, fire, grass. It's been around for 5 generations so changing it would be a bit odd. It can seem a bit repetitive but really, if you tried changing it, things just won't fit correctly. It'll be cool if there was game where you are maybe a villainous team and in the team, you get starters that isn't water, fire, or grass because the heroes will have that, but that's completely different twist there. These type possibilities however, are pretty interesting to read.

I think that changing it would be weird, but it would be nice. But I think it would have to be a rock/ paper/ scissors kind of thing. Maybe the Professor gives you this other starter once you get a certain amount of Pokémon in your Pokedex?

I would be cool with the idea of different starter types thou I think the 4th generation starter pokemon had a sub-type (Grass/Ground Torterra, Fire/Fighting Inferape, Water/Steel Emerpore). I would like the starters to be either...

1. Electric/Rock/Water combo starter choice
2. Dragon/Ice/Fire combo starter choice
3. Steel/Fire/Rock combo starter choice
4. Flying/Rock/Grass combo starter choice
5. Fighting/Psychic/Dark combo starter choice (what majesticvulpix posted).

Electric, Steel, and fire type seems OK if they just change it. Why can't Nintendo just add 2 more starters and you have to pick two and there will be one left over?

Yeah, they really should make different starter types. It's always the same combination, and mainstays tend to get old sometimes. The only exception seems to be with Yellow, where you practically had to choose Pikachu, an Electric type. Doesn't give you much for the early game, though.

Not sure what I'd like to see in place of that, though.

Black Bot : Except that while Fire beats steel. Steel isn't that strong against Electric compared to Rock/Ground types. Also Electric is average against Fire Pokemon. Its best that they keep the 3 starters that can beat each other to ensure a tougher Rival.

sonikku : Then you would have 5 Pokemon to choose from. Not to mention that Black/White had 2 Rivals instead of 1 so if they continue with that line; then both Rivals would only get 1 Pokemon. If by your idea they should expand it too 6 Pokemon starters and both you and your 2 Rivals pick 2 Pokemon.

After a while, the traditional starter types do get old, though they should be remembered as the best of the best.  So I'm going to go with yes, some new starter types could give the series a sort of fresh feeling.
