Here's my problem with Science and Religion... You can't always prove everything with science. Science is not a full-proof 100% always accurate system and of the many things that science is capable of, human error is a huge contributor to most of the scientific achievements. You don't discover anything without trial and error. It takes hundreds of trials to learn something new you didn't know before and on top of that, there's hundreds if not thousands, if not millions of different variables in this universe. It's so vast that science has proven that anything is possible.

With that being said, religion is based on belief. It's weird that there's a book that predicts the end times and says that "this" and "that" and "something else" is gonna happen yet people refuse to believe these things and call it mere coincidence. Tell me how it's possible that the bible (put together 100s of years ago) can predict these things that will happen and when they do, you'll still pass it off? Let me just say that there was a part of the bible that speaks of the New Roman Empire, the beast that rises up out of the sea with 13 heads and 13 horns. Before the United States began, there were 13 colonies with 13 Governors. Is this coincidence or scientific evidence?

I'm not going to get into major detail on this because everyone will believe what they want to believe. I can't convince anyone to change their minds especially those of you who find it challenging to open your minds. There's so much that goes into this it ain't even funny. People have been arguing and debating this very topic for thousands of years. If you need scientific evidence to make your mind up.. here's some for you... you're going to die one day. It doesn't get any more first hand experience than that. You'll find out that day and if you're wrong you might be punished. If I'm wrong, my existence meant nothing anyway and I'll cease to exist.

If you want scientific evidence, go watch a real exorcism. You'll see things that aren't humanly possible and unexplainable by use of science. That's where religion steps in and plays it's role. Your head spinning 360 degrees on your body is not scientifically possible. Where's science when you need it?

This is a question that is just asking for a argument that will lead to insults, although I think there may be a person over watching everyone but I do not believe in the creationism stuff. That is just too much.

I say if i'm gonna dedicate my life to something i need absolute facts so that i know im not just waiting my time. I won't be pulled into religion just cuz the rest of my family is religious. Why does religion kill so many people? The 30 year war in Europe decreased the population of Germany by a third. All because Catholics and Protestants didn't like each other. And if god knows everything he would have seen it coming. But then why would he let it happen. If he's a god of love wouldn't he have saved all those people? And there are tons of other examples of the same sort. It doesn't make sense to me. If someone can explain it to me without saying we shall never know i will be grateful. And then some christian families i know think to be a good person you have to believe in god. To me that is BS, you can be a perfectly nice and caring person without believing in god. I know tons of people like that. I bet have the religious people in the world are only in it cuz the rest of their family is. And if they leave they will be shunned. That's not right. People can believe what they wont. I'm not trying to dis all religious people. I'm just explaining why i don't believe in god. I won't shun you or treat you badly cuz of what you believe in, as long as you don't believe in hunting and murdering aardvarks for fun.

I don't think there is a God. I mean, if there was one, he wouldn't let all this suffering happen, and besides, Religion is most likely the number one cause for war...so God would have prevented it, but he didn't. Religion is probably the most dangerous weapon on Earth, since it can cause races to hate each other, such as the Palestinians and the Jews, whose rivalry was depicted in the Bible which is meant to spread peace, and teach love. But if He was real, then he would surely show us a miracle, right? Like ending World Hunger, he would've stopped that by now.

But Science was always there, just waiting to be discovered, and although it isn't 100% accurate, I find it more reliable and explaining than Religion, which was just made up...

I myself don't believe in a higher power but really atleast right now its impossible to prove whether a god exists or not and I doubt anybody will ever be able too.

However I do find the concept of one specific religion like Christianity for example to be true ridicolous because that basically that if you don't believe in Christ you're going to hell.?

How are you supposed to know Christianity is the right religion? That basically means life would be a gamble on which religion is the true one and I just simply think that doesn't make sense.?

You might be raised in an Islamic family for example and believe in Islam and then get sentenced to hell because you didn't believe in Christianity.

I believe that if there truly is a god he should base people on their actions in life and now what they believe in.

So while I cant prove that no religion is true or that god does not exist the concept itself just doesn't make sense to me.

Nature is god. Not in a religious sense. But the fact that the randomness and vast knowledge of the universe and all it's laws controls everything. I believed in God for 19 years. But in the past few months I realized there is no god. It is stupid to believe in a god honestly. If there was a God, there wouldn't be kids dying of hunger and war everyday. A true loving god would take care of all problems on earth and give us a perfect life. We wouldn't have to go through hell on earth to get something better. That's not love. Nature just decided to give us a chance. And I believe after trillions of years, the universe will collapse into itself and expand again beginning a new universe. Hopefully humanity want last much longer, and a new species will rise to the top and be much more peaceful. Or maybe humans can change their ways. Who knows.

Yes there is a god. Sure you can say big bang. But what caused that bang? God.

tgags123 : No, that big bang took years, uncountable, to finally happen. And then after the big bang, it was more spins of the life slot machine that finally created small single-celled organisms in what seems like uninhabitable spots of the earth. Also realize that the earth was a lot different billions of years ago.

My atheism(as defined as a disbelief in a god's existence) is based on one thing only, those who claim that a god exists haven't met their burden of proof. I apply the same criteria to deciding whether a god exists as I would the loch ness monster, or bigfoot.

Then again, for every theist there seems to be a different definition for god, I couldn't possibly address every definition of god.

The scientific method is our best tool for understanding the natural world, if you want to posit a claim that a supernatural entity exists, you couldn't possibly do that with science, because science is the study of nature, not super nature.

I did also grow up with my father as a preacher, and was heavily indoctrinated. It took a long time for me to even consider that my beliefs as a christian were wrong, but the more that I studied the bible, the more things I found could not be justified scientifically, nor can the bible be justified morally.

I'm willing to be swayed back across the fence to being a theist, if someone would simply give a good, fallacy free reason why I should believe, but that day has yet to come.

I really see no reason not to believe in God. People always have a debate of proving or disproving there is a God without any sort of logic expect for the theories that were passed down... so there is no reason to have any type of debate until you a some sort of sound reasoning that things like Big Bang Theory and all that stuff was not created by God.

If you look, well my perspective, the only possible logical way that everything exist is by God.

I'm not really sure because it could be anything. Maybe the Christians we're right all along. Maybe the Muslims we're right, And who knows, Maybe a religion that we retired thousands of years ago was right, Or it could even be a religion that nobody has worshipped ever. Maybe there is no god and when we die we instantly get reincarnated as something else on either earth, Another planet with alien life on it in a galaxy far far away, or in an alternate universe. All in all, I can't decide for sure.

i put this comment in the wrong place at the wrong time. kinda embarrased, but heres my idea

according to theories, in a plane of non existence where there is no time and space a singular "egg" appeared out of nowhere and exploded into the universe where matter and anti-matter struggled for supremacy. There was just enough matter to surpass and build up and expand the universe. But how could in the empty endless expanse with no beginning or end just poof up an atom sized cell that became everything we know? That's right, god. I believe he creates multiple universes to fill up the emptiness.

genesis 1 states he created light, then the ocean and sky, animals between, land, and animals suited for land. On day 6 he made man, then rested on the seventh. I already said the bible may not be true, but I can see the idea of this. First the stars, galaxies, and other spatial matter formed, eventually that included our sun, which was made when a cloud of spinning matter concentrated together(Sunday). Then the leftover matter made planets, asteroids, dwarf planets, and moons. Our planet was highly volatile, but things settled down and carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen made up the atmosphere. Oxygen combined with carbon to make carbon dioxide which plants breath and oxygen formed with hydrogen to make large expanses of water(Monday). Life began in the earth's oceans(Tuesday) and a few plants began moving onto land(Wednesday). Animals began to follow the new food source as they evolved to adapt to land(Thursday). After many changes in climate and wildlife mammals gained supremacy, and ancient chimpanzees branched off into homo sapiens, meaning same wise, referring to our species having the highest intellect and standing on two legs all the time(Friday). It eventually led up to today, where nothing major in change has happened to our species, therefore our way of life still involves shelter, food, and tools, so it may be a day with I-pods and the Internet but we haven't really changed (Saturday).

this may be heavy to take, but it's what I believe in. The fact science did not make sense and religion had lack of reason as well, the combination makes a much more understanding in a way that allows both ideals

Mecha Leo :   Well all you've really done is just taken the genesis account of creation and meshed it with our current understanding of the universe that science gave us. There are also some pretty blatant falsehoods in the biblical genesis creation account.

God supposedly separated night from day on the first day, but how could that be if he created the sun and stars on the fourth day?

God also created plants on the Third day before the sun existed, which is a complete misunderstanding of how plants work.

It also talks about a Firmament  where the sun stars and moon are affixed, we now know there is no such thing as a firmament.

It also makes the claim that all animals in the beginning started out as herbivores... I could go on. But the point is that the bible is simply the documentation providing us insight on how ancient people viewed the universe, it was one of the first attempts at trying to explain our universe. It's no more useful to science today than any creation story that was written 2000 years ago.

I do not know if there is a god.  I was raised to believe there is, but in my adulthood I find myself questioning.  I have read the Bible, and the Torah.. and a few other religious books, they all basically say the same thing.  So perhaps there is.  But I have never felt that overwhelming safe feeling I am told comes with acceptance of god.  Maybe someday I will get the answer I need but for right now I would have to say no.  But its just a personal opinion.

sloanstar1000 : Going from God being the provider to making the universe being able to be able to manage on their own while God mediates is part of the creation process. When you talk about why there would be day and night without sun and stars, that is because God is a provider of light, as illustrated in many parts of the Bible. In making Sun, moon and stars, God is making the something that can provide the earth light on it's own at that time.

If you look at the context as well as the direct audience that the author was writing it to, the word "firmament" was never meant to be a cosmological term, but just to describe where they are at from their point of view, eg. on earth's surface. Other uses of firmament in Hebrew or later on in the Bible shows that same understanding and that it is meant to be taken as a human's POV. Reading the rest of Genesis 1 as a context will tell you that the author simply means sky above the horizon and nothing more. Literary styles and historical context is needed when reading the Bible and not simply take the term as is.

Gotta remember that the Bible is both a book on God's truth as well as a literary book that is written in the styles of Man (not to mention that it is ancient Hebrew writing style) and you see both when reading it.

Mecha Leo : Not exactly a good argument considering that Bibles are translated back from their original manuscripts. It's just the matter of what style translation are the versions using.

play4fun : Well again, this is more or less based on an assumption that the scriptures are in fact true. I see no reason to accept biblical scripture to an accurate depiction of reality. We don't even know what the original texts of the bible actually said, since we don't have any original manuscripts, so we also must assume that the bible holds true to it's original texts, and the newest translations are far different in contrast to the earliest manuscripts we have. I'd like to point out that I was studying to be a preacher like my father, so I've read and studied the bible pretty thoroughly

The bible makes mention of many non-scientific ideas. I could grant that the firmament was referring to the human's POV, though I've looked into it many times and have never seen a translation that agrees with this, but there's no justification for the claim that a world wide flood happened, or that the earth was formed before the sun, much less the plants created before the sun. Genesis describes an actual 7 day creation of the earth.

The point is, If this bible is supposed to be the pure inspiration from the creator of the universe himself, I would expect the bible to be much more concise about the description of the actual universe. You might also expect that this revelation shouldn't have been given to such a small group of people, why wouldn't god inspire the same revelations around the globe at the same time? It could have at least revealed the nature of microorganisms and disease. The moral atrocities like the instruction to kill homosexuals or worldwide-genocide in the bible may be the worst, and wouldn't be expected from a loving god either. I don't think the bible is any more a revelation from a deity than any other religious text.
