I've been a fairly long time fan of Dungeons and Dragons. Not super-long time, only.... About 4 years or so. A couple of friends introduced me, and ever since, I can't get enough of it! I've played a myriad of characters across a couple different rulesets, often with many house rules (custom rules that the Dungeon Master allows for simplicity or fun's sake).

I first started playing on 3.5 edition. Not the easiest for new people... Thankfully, the DM had his own character sheet that cut the amount of skills down to nearly a quarter of what there originally were. (from nearly 55 skills down to barely 20. Much simpler) I persevered, asked questions, got to know the system.... And I started to really enjoy it!

Some time later, the Pathfinder system came out. These guys... These guys did awesome work. The biggest problem with 3.5 was that there were a lot of things that were just too powerful. Some feats and spells were just too easy to use to break entire games with. Challenge was a hard cookie to try and get going. With Pathfinder, however, it's so much simpler. The people who made it have put a LOT of work into balancing all the spells, feats, weapons, rules, etc etc to make for the best system I've played to date. It's currently my system of choice for DnD.

But the thing about me is that much as I like fantasy, swords, sorcery, etc, my heart and soul shall always belong to Sci-Fi. I thought about getting into DM'ing, but so many of the places I would think to make campaigns out of were sci-fi or at best modern day. So imagine my surprise, when just the other day, at a second hand store, I came across a book...

d20 Modern. They took the rules and system from DnD 3.5, and updated it to the modern day. (example: Guns instead of bows, computers have multiple skills associated with them, internet is mentioned, cars and tanks and so many more things....)

Well! This is great! Reading up on how d20 Modern works, for the rules and the classes and such, it's very much updated for modern day, and would make it much easier to adapt it into something sci-fi.

But when I looked deeper into d20 Modern, there's another book in its series that I found: d20 Future.
THIS book is what I've been looking for. With the firm, but broad rules given in it, I could craft most any sci-fi setting I could wish, and there would be a ruleset to be had to at least get a basis on.

So I'm a happy camper.

Anyone else here a fan of Dungeons and Dragons?

I'm a fan of Dungeons and Dragons too, I started to play this at school. Honestly, it was really funny sometimes. I created a human monk, 19 years old, and a half-elf vampire, older and really evil. I kept my characters sheet somewhere in my stuff in case of. Most of the time, I'm the DM, and to be honest people told me I'm a great DM because I create good stories, good scenarios. So yeah, I'm a fan of roleplaying, I still play and create for roleplaying, I'm really addicted to that

I never played actual Dungeons and Dragons... When I was in middle school a friend and I started making up pen and paper games that I later realized resembled Dungeons and Dragons a lot, but I could never find a Dungeon Master who was ready and willing to accept new players and basically teach me the game. It was the worst. I did once find someone, but it was just me and another person who had never played DnD before, and the DM got annoyed and gave up on teaching us. =(

Hey, you know there are loads of d20 system games that take place in all sorts of settings. Heck, there's even a Doctor Who d20 game and one based on Pokemon! If you can imagine it, someone has adapted it into a d20 setting already.

Also, if you're so into futuristic settings, you should definitely check out Shadowrun--though I'm sure you've already heard of it since I know how you like Warhammer 40k

laian : So you DM'd a lot? Awesome! I'm working on making my own campaign now, and since I've only played before, DM'ing sounds in timidating. I should really run a few pre-made adventures first.... Any tips for an aspiring DM?

Lazlo Falconi : That sucks, man. I admit, I really lucked out with my group. They're nice, helpful people who have taught many people DnD. They're great people. So, if ever you appear in Canadaland....

Yes, I understand you, man. It's a bit tough to be the DM the first time. That's why I will help you to be a good DM. First, it's a good thing to start with some pre-made quests (or campaigns). Now, as a DM, you are the referee, it's you who will rule the story and all the things the players will encounter (random combats, events...). It's you who will tell the players if they can do or not an action. For example, a magically held door can't be opened with a normal key or crushed with a weapon, only a magical spell or a magical item can do the trick. If a player wants to crush the door with the weapon he is holding, you can say to him/her that he can't do that or let him/her try and reveal the consequences of the act (for example a shock which causes a d4 of damage or a spell which can break the weapon depending of the result of a d20 dice). However, if another player wants to cast a spell which can unlock this door, he/she can try. Depending of the result with the d20 dice, you will announce if it's successful or not.

Now, in order to catch the attention of the players, no confusion during the quest, some description too as if you tell a story. Make some events, some NPC (non-playable characters) to interact and, as you wish, some other side quests shorter than the main quest. Remember, you're the narrator of the story and the master of the game, it's your story, your rules.

I hope I helped you, feel free to ask me if you have any other questions

Honestly, I've never been a fan of Dungeons & Dragons. It's something that never really interested me. I mean, I've seen a couple of people play it at school one time, and I could've hopped in and joined them (they even asked me to play), but I declined.

I was always interested in playing a real D&D game with a good DM and a group of people who were serious about playing but I've never been able to and now I'm too busy to actually manage it.

Also, there are so many games out there that mimic D&D in their own ways that playing the old style game with the books and such almost feels boring instead.... although, D&D is about as limitless as your imagination... take your pick

geeogree : Indeed! I feel the same way. I always felt limited by the standard swords and sorcery type of DnD, but I loved the d20 system. That's why it was such a joy when I found d20 Modern and d20 Future. I can go so far with those!

vizwiz123 : How do you know if you don't like DnD if you haven't played it? =P
I admit that DnD is pretty terrible as a spectator game. The joy of it comes from playing it, with a character you care about, and crawling the dungeons and stabbing the things as that character!

Nope, can't say that I am considering I've never played this game before. I have heard of it though, several times as a kid and recently as an adult. There's a few Dungeon and Dragon games here that I might look into....

By the way, I think this goes best in the Video Games forum, perhaps.

YourMajestyKen : Why would this go into video games?

Yes, many video games used the DnD system (Balder's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc), but there's... Not much video involved.

I was kinda thinking about one of those rent-a-forum things at the bottom for it. Not sure how to go about those, though.

YourMajestyKen : Are we thinking about the same thing here?

'cuz the Dungeons and Dragons I'm thinking of involves paper, pencils, and a whole lot of imagination. Not exactly a video game.

(I would happily resolve this by making it its own rent-a-forum, but I'm short by quite a lot of Vizzed... hm...)

Hmm, I'm not sure. The Local Mods would have to review the thread and see...now that we have clarified it's a paper game and NOT a video game, it will most likely remain here. The Local Mods would know.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
