So I tried my third pokemon hack in 3 days, and I'm continuing the tradition of reviewing a game a day for the week. (hopefully. Don't hold me to it)

Today's hack was Pokemon Obscure, a hack of the Game Boy Color game, Pokemon Gold. This isn't an ordinary hack, and there's a lot I really want to get into. I only played it for a couple hours, but it's a great game, and one I'll probably go back to later in the week (I quit because I got stuck in a wall, and rather than restart, I'm going to move on to other games for now)

Graphics - 9

I don't often say this about pokemon hacks, but this was all tasteful. There were a lot of tile edits, map edits, character edits, and even pokemon edits. Maybe one day I'll go through the game and show even more, but of the few hours I played, I was totally satisfied with the wide range of things I saw in this hack. I know I said I didn't play the whole game... but...

You know why I'm telling you not to panic?

It's because the main character is a nose.

And not only that, but

Your rival is a pig. And I do mean a pig. Do you need better proof?

You'll get a few more samplings of other graphical edits, but since most of the game is a big graphic edit, I'll save them for later, where they also fit into other catagories.

In general, I'm in love with the amount of work the person did on the graphics.

Sound - 6

It's your typical garden variety pokemon music, and your typical garden variety pokemon sounds. Nothing to wet the bed over. I'm glad the music did not change, as it didn't take away from the experience at all.

Addictiveness - 9

I'm going to go back to this. There are no ifs ands or buts about it. I enjoyed playing this hack until I got stuck. I really did. In fact, I was enjoying it so much, I seriously contemplated holding off on the review a day plan for this week just so I could finish the game and see even more of it. However, I ultimately decided you should all know this is a good game before I put it on hiatus.

Story - 8

You are a nose. Your rival is a pig. There's something else...

Oh, right, we need to go see Jesus.

Wait... why do we need to go see Jesus?

Apparently to get a Magic shoe... I see...

And our main goal I guess is to embark on a journey to turn ourselves back into a human.

How do we do that?

By beating the game of course. You know, elite 4 and all that jazz.

Here's the thing. See this gym? It's not a gym anymore. It's a Jim. And it's redesigned from the original gym.

There's a fair amount to the story I'm sure I'm not seeing as I didn't get to go to various points I'd have liked. However, based on what I see, I am convinced this game really doesn't make sense, and that only adds to it's charm.

Depth - 7

A picture says a thousand words...

He's trying to sell me an Ex-Soviet Anti-Air Tank. For 1,000,000 dollars.

I know this image was already used... but take a close look at the pokeballs this time.

Finally, the piece de resistance.

A custom pokemon. In a pokemon game.

I'm dead serious.

How many more are there? who knows? Who cares? 1 is more than most games ever put out for hacks.

Difficulty - 3

The game itself is not hard. Nothing you do will make it hard. The hardest part unfortunately hurts the game.

This is the one knock I've had on it to this point.

The ledges are too often. There will be points where you will need to reload a past save if you are not careful.

Aside from that though, as long as you frequently save, you will be fine.

Overall - 9.1

This hack gets the Leggy Stamp of Approval.

There's a lot of custom edits, and the game isn't stale like so many other hacks are. The creator truly got what kids like. Crude randomosity, without being too vulgar and rude.

This game has plenty of that. There were many times I simply smiled and shook my head. This game was overall what most hacks should try to be. Fun. Rather than just stupid.

Now to recap the top 3 best and worst things...

Best
1. Custom Maps that don't suck.
2. A custom pokemon!
3. The character is a nose.

Worst
1. Ledges. I hate them
2. He edited the rivals in battle sprite to be a pig. Why couldn't he have made your sprite a nose?
3. As of right now, there isn't a third.

All told, this game is great, and can best be described with the image I showed much earlier on. The one that said... "Don't Panic."

If you don't panic you will enjoy this game. Just remember to save frequently.

Well... This game certainly looks... interesting. At least it's a different spin on the normal, cliche outlook on Pokemon and its story. x3

I don't really get why you have be a nose and why your rival has to be a pig, either. But it makes for an interesting future anecdote.

Someone70 :

And it's that, which allures me to the game.

You may want to give this one a try. It's rather fun really.

I remember going through a plethora of Pokemon hacks when I still handled hacked game reviews officially and when I had adequate time. The vast majority of the hacks were, to be blunt, exceptionally lazy. A few stood out, but I honestly never came across this one until you reviewed it. It strikes to me as a quirky attempt to add a new flavor to the Pokemon games while maintaining the standard game play. I should definitely consider taking the time to look at this one. It would almost seem worthwhile just to see all the quirky changes made. I can see the fact that the game play with minimal changes could also be perceived as a waste for people looking for a twist on the actual formula, but as I said before...keeping it the same, in my opinion, is generally advantageous.
