Super Double Dragon for the Super Nintendo is a great beat-em-up featuring a decent set of kung-fu attacks, two-player cooperative play, a decent challenge and plenty of ninja weapons to pick up along the way.

The story of the game is pretty much non-existent, so I presume the Double Dragons are back to beat up the hordes of Shadow Warrior gang-members who are running rampant in their home-town.  The game play is pretty much what you would expect/hope for in a Double Dragon game.  There is a mercifully short amount of platforming (ie falling off a cliff and dying) and instead the game play is focused on what Double Dragon fans love best, beating up an endless supply of bad guys.  While Billy and Jimmy play the same some of their moves have stylistic differences, and there are some stylish block moves that while are never necessary to win a fight still add some fun variety and flair to the proceedings.  Unlike Double Dragon 3 which features a weapon specific to each playable character that can be used 5 times per level, here you will be picking up a variety of ninja weapons and using them to your heart's content (or until you enter a new area).  These weapons include throwing knives, nunchuckus, staves, bombs, and even a boomerang makes an appearance.

The music in this game is amazing, with each level offering a new musical piece that will keep you entertained through all the violence.  The sound effects are similarly sufficient.  While graphically there is a good supply of bad guys and scenery, some may be disappointed by the small size of the playable characters compared to titles like Final Fight.  This is a minor problem, though, since it hardly gets in the way of viewing the violence on-screen.

Best enjoyed with a friend controlling the other Double Dragon, this game is a satisfying beat-em-up experience for all those who really feel like battling the forces of evil... with your fists!

I actually haven't played the SNES Double Dragon. I assume they fixed that annoying aspect of random chance on who got punches in that the original NES version had?

rcarter2 :

LOL yes it is possible to safely combo punches together (although perhaps easier to use kicks).  If the enemy gets a single punch in they quickly combo it into two more hits and take you down, no more struggling to trade punches back and forth.

That is good. That is one thing I hated about the NES Double Dragons. It was pretty much like rolling dice when you are facing each other fighting. It is like playing a battle round in RISK. I could never be completely consistent with how much life I had by the end of the levels each time I played. What was really a bummer is that the more moves you learned, the enemies got ridiculously hard to beat without getting hit.
