soxfan849 : I know I'm not the_casualty but he doesn't seem to be responding these days, so I'll try to help. Uhm, I haven't done a dropdown menu in a very long time, but I think if you set div.header to float: top; (Maybe) it might help. I'm not really sure though, sorry!

OH WAIT. Give div.left some position attributes! Currently it's set to just appear after div.header, so if you tell it to appear at, say top: 50px; that might do it. If this doesn't work, then try the float: stuff.

septembern : I am much more familiar with HTML4 properties than HTML5 properties, so I'd have to default to HTML4. Not to mention that HTML5's main use so far has been to make plugins such as Flash, Java, etc. become obsolete, and much of HTML5's core revolves media-related tasks. Very interesting indeed, but HTML5 is still in development, and a majority of its framework is hardly covered by most modern browsers. That said, it's worth looking up and learning about, at least.

As far as your image question goes; it's slightly vague, so I'll try to answer. I'm assuming you know about the img src property; however, with that setup images are conformed to a single layer, where as divs can be layered quite easily. I'd suggest going with divs, however if you're determined to use HTML only it's possible to layer tables on top of each other as well.

soxfan849 : I was going to answer your question, but Lazlo pretty much got it. Fiddle with the positions, and research terms such as position: relative; position: absolute; etc. I would completely answer your question, but since it seems that you're doing this to practice your HTML and CSS, I'll point you in the right direction and hopefully you can continue from there. Be sure to ask again if you have any more questions, I'll (hopefully) be checking up every once in a while on here to see if I have any.

Lazlo Falconi : As far at the thread thing goes, it's no problem, haha.

As far as the portfolio site goes, I was "supposed" to create it in December of last year, but I just haven't gotten to it. So, at the moment, nope. :effort:

Lazlo Falconi :

It works if I use absolute positions. But that kind of defeats the purpose of using float, doesn't it? I'm gonna keep fiddling around with things, but I think I might be missing something. Floating the menu to the top and clearing both sides doesn't work either.

And yeah, it doesn't matter to me who answers my questions. I am doing this to try to get some practice, but at this point I don't mind being told how to fix this.

EDIT: Turns out you can't use float:top. Using float:left and setting the position to absolute seems to solve the problem. Now my problem seems to be purely aesthetic, as it puts a sort of purple box around everything. I haven't looked to see why this is yet, so I'm probably not noticing something. But I wanted to edit this real quickly.

Second EDIT: Hahaha. Derp. That was from when I said background-color:some kind of purple. Seems to be a lot better.

What browser do you think that it is hardest to make coding work for, whether it be layouts or actual site template design?

Which browser do you use to actually view the php documents that you create on your own computer?

Do you use XXAMP or another software?

I made a thread about this but Requiemhaunt suggesting posting it here..

Im reviving my guffsworld website and Instead of just developing one style of site, im developing two.. mostly so I have a choice but on the off-chance If I can combine the both in the end; it may turn out better.  Im stuck on developing my second style....

I have a very very limited knowledge of html and I need some help.  Im having a standard Index with news and links (links to other sections of the site like emulators, roms, downloads etc..) and when someone clicks on a link I want it to open in a new window which is fixed at say 700x700.  This is my first bit of coding I need help on.

The second is when these windows open, I want a transparent text box which has a scroll bar on the side; in the middle of this new fixed window.  Basically I want to have the fixed window display everything without having to scroll down the entire window.

Im going for a graphics-strong approach with this site as you may have gathered.  Any help is greatly appreciated, thank-you.

2 questions, and I don't know if one of them has to do with the topic.
1) where did you learn your coding from?
2) How do you go about making your own bio (profile wise).

Well I've been making layouts lately (I know how to make layouts on the advanced layout maker with coding and stuff) And I was wondering how do I make the text word bolded in a layout?

I'm not sure if any of you still need help with these questions, but being that it's been several months since the_casualty posted, I'm going to answer your questions and close this thread.

gtwalq : You can set the size of the browser window by making a link on your splash page with the following code

Then, within that document, you set the body background to have whatever image you want, then make a DIV that's, say 600px by 600px, margins of 50px, and auto overflow (Which will create a scrollbar when needed, and hide it when not)

Of course, you can use whatever dimensions make sense to you. Let me know if you have any more questions.

catfight09 : 1) I can't tell you where the_casualty learned from, but I learned from a variety of sources. I started when I was 13, an uncle gave me Sams' Teach Yourself HTML, but I went on to learn by viewing the source of other people's sites. A good place to learn is W3Schools.
2) Throw some HTML and CSS into the bio section of the Edit Profile and Settings section. If you're using Chrome, you can right-click the bio on someone's profile, and click "Inspect Element" to see what kind of coding they used. Try it on my profile!

hilacle : will make this text bold but not this text.

earthwarrior : < will make a left facing bracket ( < ), and > will make a right facing bracket ( > )
