Online Forever is a project intended to bring network functionality back to the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and other systems as well. It is a very ambitious project which apparently is still going on to this day. The end goal is to try to make games that were once online for the project's supported systems come back online... forever. Theoretically. This would be done by not only producing the means to restore network functionality to these games, but also then releasing the source code to it to allow anyone who wants to make servers for these games to do so. What do you think of it? Here's the project's site for more details:

That would be a mass undertaking as systems as far back as at least the Nintendo Entertainment System had the capability of connecting to the Internet.  In addition they would have to provide servers for those systems where surfing the net was sort of a selling point to having said system.

It would be insane to see those games back online, but it would also be amazing.

I myself am actually pretty interested in the project, although I can't say I know much about the specifics.

Theoretically it would work, but my question would be the legality.

It would be interesting to see these games go online. One that I remember is Phantasy Star Online that had a pretty decent player base. There's Phantasy Star Blue Burst out now which is pretty much the same thing, but I'd like to play it for the Dreamcast once again.

Phantasy Star Online is still kind of online with the Dreamcast. You have to use a patched game image though so you can connect to the SCHTHACK servers on your DC. But yeah, it'd be lovely to see that game and aa lot of others come back full force.
