I downloaded the Sonic Generations demo on PSN this afternoon and spent an hour or so disecting the 4-6 minutes of gameplay they packaged.
First impression - The game looks good already. A week before release, I couldn't ask for more. The game looks and handles like I thought it would. Classic Sonic feels like Classic Sonic, and Modern Sonic is bearable.
I think in general, the game looks good. But is it good?
Pros
- Classic Sonic handles like he should. Good physics close to the Genesis physics, same tunes we loved from the classic games
- The levels are redone for both classic and modern Sonic. Not only does each level have two variations... (one for classic and one for modern), but each level is actually different from the game they took it from. Green Hill Zone looks a little different than it did back then in terms of level design, and I like what they did.
- Modern Sonic doesn't suck. Going into this I thought it was going to be the worst end, but I'm having a hard time choosing which of the two was better. Good problem to have.
Cons
- The demo didn't show enough variety. I wanted to see something new aside from just Greenhill Zone.
- Seems too easy. The early levels are bound to be easy... but seriously, the levels on the demo may as well say "Push SQUARE to win!" I expect the levels in game to be harder progressively.
- Classic levels feel like they will be too short, and Modern Levels feel like they might be as well. I'm worried about how big the maps will be later in game.
Final Verdict - Right now, it looks like a damn good game. You can purchase it for 50 bucks at Gamestop on November 1st, or you can pre purchase the Steam Version for 30 bucks, with two free classic Sonic games. If you have the computer to handle it, get the Steam Version. Otherwise, 40-50 bucks doesn't look like a bad deal for possibly the best Sonic game since Adventure 2 (not counting Colors, since I have yet to play it... no Wii or DS after all)
