For one of my Art Institute classes, I had to purchase this book. Even though I had a slight bit of knowledge with PHP before reading this book, it definitely wasn’t enough to be able to write my own code.

Right away the book makes you feel comfortable with learning PHP and you get hands on experience with following easy to follow examples. With 450 pages, I never got lost in this book once! Anything I got an error or messed up on an example, the book would tell me how to work my way thru that error; the writer of this book was prepared for the possibility of people messing up!

Mostly because of this book, I now know how to make a dynamic website with users memberships, store and retrieve information from a mySQL database, allow users of a website to upload files, work with cookies and sessions, and so much more. The book explains the basics of programming, gets you comfortable with new terms, and lets you dive right into the code without letting you drown!

Our java book is about as thick as that, but its probably half the physical size of it.

Can anyone get a copy of this and maybe upload it? I have always wanted to learn PHP and I have two books that I bought off Amazon that have been ZERO help.

EDIT AGAIN: Well let me go ahead and ask too, what version of PHP and MYSQL does this book cover? Should I be trying to find a newer edition?

Well I've got some video tutorials on learning php which I got from lynda.com ($150 softare), I can upload them if your interested.

I think this version covers the most recent version but we'll let bigbob verify that.

Definitely interested. Are they helpful for a beginner? I know very very very little PHP, but I do have prior programming knowledge (not much) in Visual Basic and Java.

This book and that video are what I used to learn PHP. That video is very basic and is very good for a beginner. However, I still like the book more than the video tutorial.

EDIT: As of today (04-18-08) I have ordered this book. I should have it within a week. I hope this one will be of more help than my others have.
