You can only swing the way your player is facing. If your guy sets up for a backhand he's going to do a backhand no matter how you swing. Same thing for a forehand. That's the way the game is set up. It's meant to be simple.

Could be PAL only because it does say in the manual you can do backhand and forehands with separate motions. Never mentions the directions that the character is facing.
