Hey guys, and gals,

so im writing this essay about old video games and new video games, comparing and contrasting them, old being anything under 64 bit (and including 64 bit) tand new being anything higher

( in other words if you dont know what bits are, anything older than nintendo 64 and and new stuff is anything newer)

what do you guys like about old games?
what do you dislike about old game?
new games?
and what do old games have that new games dont? character? originality?
and what do new games have? better graphics obviously but are they better games?

i have several ideas of my own here, but not enough to get 5 pages of material! lol id really appreciate any opinions you have on this topic

Well since no one has said anything yet I will help you out. I like old games because they really take me back to when I first learned about video games (first zelda game on SNES). However some of the story line and actions made it kind of dull and repetetive. New games the story lines are ever growing. There are always interesting things to do sometimes even after you beat a game. Some of the dislikes are that many games are into heavy borrowing from each other and that's annoying. Many of the old games are very original and while, yes, they did start the whole franchise it still just has that original feel. Though many of the newer games are just better in general and have more fully deveoloped story lines and many of the character and item names are original and make you think that "Man.....I NEVER would have thought of that!" Hope that helps! If you have any more questions feel free to ask me or pm me or whatever.

I think that the, uhh, "charm?" of the characters back then coupled with unprecedented gaming mechanics got people into gaming. I dislike the repetitiveness of games back then however, the companies like Nintendo or Capcom release five different versions of the same game every year. Games now tend to have really different art styles which allows developers to make more original games, and the more advanced rendering abilities of now-a-days let the developers, "set the mood" with dynamic lighting or eery music. Although, with the price of all this tech increasing, less profitable companies and potential developers will be put off from creating amazing games. The consumer is effected too, and you can see the effects of that (I never recall people complaining about the pricing of the N64 and such). Personally I prefer modern gaming, because it can only get better from here.

The best thing about old games is how they work with their limitations. Nowadays we don't have to worry about how many pixels a sprite can have, or how many kilobits can fit into a cartridge; often times, it was how creative old games were with their limitations that made me play games that are older than I am. The best things to come from modern games I think are how certain limitations were lifted from old games; in a game, we can have more than one battle theme and be able to roam without random encounters which is a good thing, the problem is that developers try to wow gamers with visuals and loose the charm that old games had.

Compared to a lot of the newer games, I definitely like older better. They have a lot more originality, and much more fun in the games, IMO. The newer games that I generally dislike are the FPS's, except Halo. Theirs too much blood and gore in these games, nowadays unfortunately.

Newer games have little to no originality, though when or if they do, they tend to be very memorable games.
So I would choose the newer games over the older ones.

I would argue that new games are just as original to other current generation games. New games have just as much potential for originality with even newer more vast restrictions and variables affecting how different games turn out.

I like retro games, but everyone likes the "new" games (like COD and Halo.) and say "Hey, better graphics=better game, right?" That is incorrect. As the great AVGN once said "Graphics arent everything. People overlook the gameplay nowadays and just look at the graphics." I agree.
