I take great pride in being an RPG nerd, when I play an RPG I immerse myself as best I can and even for a game like FFX that doesn´t really count as a RPG (it lacks too many elements of RPG) I still play as if I was at the place the main character is at, and ofc I act as the main character.

So what does all of this have to do with FFX having a bad game design and the Al Bhed primers ? If you do not mind spoilers read on, if not please go away, I hate spoilers and it makes my heart ache when I spoil something for other players, now on with the topic!

So I was happily playing through FFX as immersed as I am when I play RPG´s when I noticed that the Al Bhed language is pretty neat and decided to play the game again after collecting all the primers, however I noticed I was nearing the end of the game (it´s pretty obvious by what characters you fight and such, I didn´t check online how long the game is or anything like that) while I had only a few primers, so I went online to seek information (and I rarely do this) about if I needed to finish all content or not to get the primers since first time around I was gonna play it as a RPG and the 2nd time I was gonna play it through 100% with the language already translated not paying any heed to RP elements (such as rushing if a place is gonna colapse rather than checking every room for stuff)when I found a page that informed me of a terrible thing.

You can miss 4 of the primers never to get them again unless you play from scratch, and those 4 primers are a good 75% into the game.

I felt sick and gutted, I realized I had to make another save and get those primers, save the letters and then delete that save and continue with my first save, and while I tried to look at it as an oppertunity to check if I liked the linear or the more free sphere grids more it still feels too much to have to play through 75% of the game only to get those 4 letters so I can play the game through again with every letter translated.

Who else shares my pain, who else thinks it´s stupid that the only letters you can only get once are so late into the game, who else thinks it´s even stupid at all for a RPG to have such a key element of the game locked at all at a certain time ?

I shall play the game twice and a three quarter times, however that´s just me, what I´d like to know is what you guys view of this is and what you would do.

Edit: A thousand apologizes, I did not notice there was an entire board dedicated to FF, sorry, please move this and whip me for my failure.

Yeah.

geeogree :
DarkHyren :

They should be able to move it.

Good article, btw. I sort of agree, although the Al Bhed thing is a side quest. They don't say anything that life changing, so it doesn't really matter.

I agree whole heartedly though.

those primers were a pain. And I didn't have the benefit of anybosy telling me those 4 were unattainable again... ARGHHH I just want to understand what they are saying! Of course... they don't say much, and most times you can kinda guess what they are saying, so its not a total waste.

Yeah I remember only missing a couple of them so it wasn't hard to decipher with only a couple letters missing. I wasn't that much of a completist to have replayed it for them, though it's something to do though if you're bored .

I completely understand your pain. I too like to either replay games for 100% or do it from the start. And i personally found like a good 20 or so of the Primers. And i only got like 1 of those irreplaceable ones. It made me quite pissed for a good hour or so before i decided to finish it the second time and just stop playing the game. So now im done with it and i rarely even look in the game's direction -.-
