The Ratchet and Clank series were incredible, it introduced us to what the PlayStation 2 can do with action games, and had many successful sequels, such an Going Commando, Up your Arsenal, and Deadlocked, which I think is the best one so far.
But while the game's creator, Insomniac Studios, was working on The Legend of Spyro games, It decided to pass the buck to High Impact Games... and it blew.
The graphics meet PS2 standards, but barely. Seeing as it came from a PSP game, it's expected look something like it, but they could have been improved just a little.
The gameplay is decent, but the controls are hard to get used to. You drop like a rock most of the time when you fall, so your only hope is to glide, and even THAT doesn't last long, even for an R&C game.
There's not as many planets in this game too, there's like, 8-9 or something compared to the 11-12 planets in the other games.
The final boss is easy, but in Challenge Mode, which i'm glad it still has, even with fully upgraded weapons and max Nanotech and armor, it takes around 3-4 hits and boom, you're dead. I don't get it.
One thing that's innovative is that you can find armor in certain parts of the game instead of buying it. So you don't have to waste bolts on that and focus your bolts on buying weapons and other useful items.
Another bad thing about this game is that Nanotech is very limited in this game, not because of the fact it's hard to find, it's just that they cut back on it, and also takes a long time to level it up. You start with 5 Nanotech, and max out at 50, and in Challenge mode, 75. Granted, the first 2 games weren't much as well, but in the 3rd game, it went up to 200 in Challenge Mode, and in Deadlocked, it can go on forever to 999 or something with the help of multiple experience mods.
Your wrench isn't a joke, but if you're out of ammo for your weapons, I doubt you'll stand a chance, because it is weak, and there are no upgrades for it, unlike in the 2nd and 4th games. You have to spam your Hyper-Strike to actually do some damage to the enemies. The problem there is that you have to get close to the enemies, and you risk getting hit.
In conclusion, I give it a 4/10. It's tolerable, yes, but only play it if you're bored out of your mind. I consider it a rental at max, but if you want to play it, be my guest, because I'm just stating my opinion of it. I think High Impact Games could have done a lot better with the PSP to PS2 transition for this game.
The latest Jak and Daxter game suffered the same fate, but kept the charm of the 1st game with all the eco powers, and that's what sort of saved it. All I'm saying is, just rent it, or buy the PSP version. You'll see why.
