So i did this for Pokemon and now im doing it for FF also. What do you believe is the most needed item in FF? Is it Potions? Hi-Potions? Ethers? Eye Drops? The only thing im excluding are things like the Ramuh orb from FFV that gave you his summon. Only real "items" like Potions and Phoenix Downs and Ethers. Elixirs don't count since it is kinda too strong for this lol.

Personally, I find the Ether family to be the most crucial. Dry Ethers and Ethers can replenish MP, which allows Magic to be used. And Magic can be used for anything. From reviving teammates, to healing said teammates, to taking away status problems like Blind and Toad, to even damaging enemies.

I guess I'll just say the Phoenix Down, since sometimes you just don't have the Life spell, or your White Mage is down. Whatever. But the Phoenix Down is good. Plus, it instantly kills undead enemies, which is useful.

I'd have to go with the Ether. You can indeed use magic for just about anything. In the games I've played, once I got the level 2 cure and life spells the items for those were obsolete. They packed up and were sent home with a face. Not only that, you can use magic to cure any ailment and make other characters stronger.

I have to say the Fenix Down (FFVI FTW!!!) on account of pure awesome spelling.
But in all seriousness, the Phoenix Down is crucial for any beginning team. Absolutely vital to survival out in the world. Especially since most mages don't learn Rise/Life until later in the game.

Phoenix Downs are your best friends when playing in the Final Fantasy series, believe me when I tell you that your comrades go down pretty fast during boss fights.

Hmmm this is tough. Phoenix Downs help a lot, but so do Hi Potions. I think I will go with Hi Potions simply because if you have enough of them you wont need too many Phoenix Downs.

You all make good points. But i like to train alot so i don't usually die much during boss fights. Like the only time i died in a Boss Fight in FFIV was against that Demon Door that i didn't realize it OHKO's people. Theres a good trick for mass killing all the ones in that dungeon.

But yea number 2 on my list is Phoenix Downs. They give you a mini-second chance.

I don't really use healing items....at all. So I guess the most useful item for me was the dead pepper in FF9. Second I guess would be the X-potion. In rarely ever use it but I have used it before so I guess I'll count it.

I never use items at all, either, like xxchaosxx. The only item I ever really use is phoenix down, since it lets me revive whoever has the white magic keeping everyone alive. Plus, until you get far enough into the game that someone has life or revive, phoenix down is all you got to make sure everyone gets exp.

The only item I ever really need is potions. I usually spend a ton of time (4+ hours) leveling my characters at the beginning of the game and only attack using physicals, so I never really lose any party members because I heal between fights.
