How many game genre's are there anymore? Seriously, all you see now days on XBox, and Playstation 2 are all basically within 5 different categories
The only system that is actually pumping out unique games is the GameCube and Game Boy Advance (and now with DS).

Turn based RPG's are just about gone, Shooter games are pretty much extinct, aren't to many Side Scrollers anymore.

The graphics in the games now days keep getting better, but are the games actually getting funner?

What is everyones view and opinion on modern day game genre's?

Sometimes they get repetitive like all the WWII shooters that came out. Other times they are ok. But yeah I know what you mean.

Yes, Repetitive is a great way to describe it.

That's 1 thing I like about the DS over the PSP...the DS will actually have games that'll be unique and wont be on other systems, the PSP on the other hand has alot of imports from the PS2, and many of the games that are comming out for the PSP are also comming out for XBox, and PS2.

But yeah, it seems as though it's up to Nintendo to give us "New" games.

Yeah Animal Crossing Pikiman and other stuff like that are Nintendo's specialty.

Well nintendos games areant good... they are just oddly addictive, i want a chemical test on all nintendo made products!!! i mean i loved animal crossing when i played but i was the "the gay should i do this for" yet i couldn't put it down.

The problem with turn based is that only so much can be done with it. It was also way too overused on teh Super Nintendo to the point where there can be little to nothign new in them.

Well games like Chrono Trigger added a nice twist to it. And David remember Paper Mario and the Thousand Years Door is turn based.

John the genre's aren't fine. If the game companies aren't careful then everything will get to be exactly like everything else. That is why games like Vitiful Joe and Katamari Damacy succeed with critics.

CT was for the super Nientendo. Almost all good turn based games reside on the super nintendo and systems with equal or near equal power(thus why there are more turn based games for handheld systems.)


Turn based has one major flaw in it. For it to be an actual turn it woul have to be back and forth. This has no realtime strategy which is actually even easier then most games. Turn ased require lots of leveling to avoid it being extremely easy so rather then have a challange they just have you level grind. To actually add a challange and stimulate your mind Turn based added puzzles. I'm a major fan of turn based but to tell you the truth everything you can do with an actual turn based system has been done. WoW claims to have a turn based system but actually is just an action fighter. They claim to have it the other way around but there are no actuall turns. Turn based has evolved and looks nothing like turn based now. It is now action rpg. Thus why games like Diablo 2, Phantasy Star Online and other similar titles flourished. Action RPG systems can be much more different then turn based and can provide a much better challange.
