Hello everyone. This small tread is going to be all about the project.
I'll post a FAQ here as well as new questions are asked.

History
Back in 2008 on the ROMHacking.net forums Lindblum started a project to translate the unlicensed Chinese remake of Final Fantasy VII on NES. Thankfully has was sucessful in translating the game and we can all enjoy it here in the Retro Game Room.

Being a lover of 8-bit remakes and retro gaming I became interested in the project and played it even before the translation was complete. However, I was dissatisfied with many aspects of the game including the recycled graphics and lack of FF7 music.
So later that year I decided to try to organize an improvement project, which I did. Many people assisted including Lindblum who generously revealed many of the game's offsets. Also, tummai lent a hand at fixing the music problem along with Lindblum. Many other talented folks have also made contributions.

However, because of several factors in our personal lives and what not the project ground to a halt multiple times. That is until now. I am happy to say that in association with Davideo7 and Vizzed Board I am relaunching the project.

F.A.Q.
What is the goal of this project?
-To upgrade the graphics & music in FF7 for NES to better match the original PSX release.

Will Yuffie & Vincent be added?
-For now I plan on including them as cameos. If, at a later date, an ASM hacker of exceptional skill wants to make them playable characters by all means I invite anyone to try.

Yeah, this sounds great. Sadly though, I don't really know how I can really help(not to mention I haven't even played the original game -.-)... but that position about 8-bit composing sounds really interesting. Can someone point out exactly how you can compose 8-bit music? I'd really like to do that

Thanks for the supportive words, guys.

To answer your question, mdynasty926, FamiTracker is the best tool for this.
You can then convert your compositions to the sound engine format of the specific game you'd like it to be in.
Of course FamiTracker can output NSF. files in it's own engine for general distribution too.

LordVanya : Is it free? I haven't had much experience in composing music electronically, but I really wanna help out somehow and this is probably the only thing I can help with XD. Plus, I absolutely adore Nobuo Uematsu's music lol

Edit: Nevermind, I downloaded it and now I'm experimenting with it. It seems pretty simple to use. Thanks!

I have no experience in those fields, but what about people who can find glitches? You know, like if someone goes into a certain area and the game freezes, infinite amount of Gil or a a certain item when an action is reformed, etc.

No experience, but I like the idea of the actual full ff7nes game. I have played the version before and they left alot of stuff out. I say go for it.

I've played around with the FamiTracker thing and I basically have a good idea of how it works. Suppose I could compose a piece on FFVII on FamiTracker and send it to you or something? I already made a recreation of the Town theme from the original Final Fantasy to test it out. And I tried to make a J-E-N-O-V-A on 8-bit, but that's a tad bit hard, especially since I still haven't gotten the hang of the drums/noise channel. I really want to get this position to help out this project

davidmull12 : I will address the issue of tester positions after I have at least one person for each position on the development team.

mdynasty926 : Sounds like you're on the right track. Send me some of your work when you get a chance I'd like to hear it.

I am going to need testers, but I'm concentrating on building the team first.
So keep an eye on the Help Wanted thread for news on that front.

Although it goes against the plotline of FFVII, will there be a way to revive Aeris?

That isn't planned at this time, but it would be a simple thing to ASM hack a routine that would place her back in your party.

LordVanya : I wish I could help at this stage, but my skills are not exactly fitting for the job... although I will gladly test when that comes up. I can't wait for the upgrade to get off the ground! And I'd be forever grateful if you guys did put the Aeris sequence in .

Nope. Very little has been inserted.
As soon as I get the mugs in place and using the correct colors then we'll have something
to show. Of course, the bigger the team gets the faster this will all go.

These are them. Don't worry about how the colors are distributed. Just keep in mind that these guys have 2 palettes and each 8x8 tile can have either palette. I can change the specific colors too. Also, it is made up of 22 tiles + one blank one that is repeated several times. The monster is actually 48x48 pixels in size. it's organized something like this:

@ are image tiles.
~ are blank tiles.
