So I recently found out that I do not like Stradegy Guides that do not follow the game exactly. For example: I was playing the Last Remnant and the guide says that I must beat "The Fallen" before I go in search of the 5th ark...towards the very end of the. However, I came to find out that if you even step FOOT inside Undelwalt, the chance is lost. So I lost my chance at that, and at the best achievement available. I think this guide was very poorly done.

A similar case is that in FFXII where you can miss the best weapon in the game if you do not thoroughly read the guide. It explains that there are 4 treasure chests wich are not to be opened...well isnt' the point of the game to explore everything?!

Does anyone else have similar stories?

Nope but I rarely ever use strategy guides, kinda takes the fun and surprise out of things. If I'm interested in knowing how to earn achievements, I usually just go to IGN to see how some achievements can be earned.

I like guides so that I can try to master the game. I mastered FFVIII without the guide, I was pretty impressed.

Yeah it's hard to master a game without guides, though I did it with FF7 and almost did it with FF8. But mastering games takes a long time so I only do that for the best of the best.

I generally try and stay away from strategy guides, I like finding most of the secret stuff myself. That said I do skim through them after I beat whatever game it goes to and come across several mistakes in some of them. Their were a couple in the FF VII guide but I can't remember what they were lol

I usually like reading guides, either official or on the internet, because with official guides I enjoy the extras, like posters, pictures, CDs, concept design, etc. With internet guides, I love reading the author's commentary, jokes, and their take on things. I usually play a game through without using a guide, to enjoy it and get all the surprises, then if it's good I'll replay it with a guide. When I played Xenosaga 2, I played it without a guide. I thought it was a fun game, but kind of short. I played it with a guide, and realized that there was over 50+ hours of side quests and side story that I missed entirely, just because I wasn't thorough.

I like using guides after I beat a game, and if the game is great I'll beat it a third time without the guide, seeing if I can remember everything.

I myself, don't like to use guides either unless I've beaten it already and I want to totally find all the secret weapons or whatever like in FF.
I think your guide that you talked about wasn't meant to complete everything. It was meant to just beat the game with ease. For example, there was a guide I used for FFV just to know the Job system better, but then I read ahead while i was at the last part of the game and noticed that it said not to open a treasure chest before the Exdeath/NeoExdeath battle. The chest had Shinryuu in it, one of the strongest wicked hard superbosses you can find in FF games(I'm sure you knew that already just by your username ) It told you to skip Omega too. The reason the guide told you to skip was because it wanted you to beat the game with ease.

A few of the maps are wrong for the San Andreas Guide (not so much the actual map, as the numbers on the map). I also remember a few mistakes in the FF VII and VIII guides.
