A lot of people talk to their pets. People talk to them to interact with them and even though we may understand each other, they love us and we love them without reservation.

I agree with some of the other things people have said here - It's easy to confide in them. I have a pet rat, and he's actually rather intelligent. I think to an extent, or I like to believe, that they actually do acknowledge when you're upset, happy, and so on.

My old dog always used to respond to moods and things I said when talking to him. They're great for cheering you up - I found that they seem to be extra cuddly when you feel down.

Pets are wonderful, and the best bit is most of the time, that they can't talk back.

Just my opinion.

Because they're affectionate with the pets, and the pets, believe it or not, does listen.

Well, if I did have a pet to talk to, then I would do so because it helps me get rid of some stress. You know those times when you're all stressed out and you just have to relax somehow? Pets are there for that reason. And they always look like they're listening, even when they really aren't, so they are ideal for talking to.

I have four cats, and I talk to them all the time. I use a different tone for each. Each cat of mine knows what tone is theirs if I am addressing them individually. If I call one, the specific one I'm calling will raise it's ears and pay attention to me. The others pay less heed of mind. I also have a tone when I'm talking to "the whole group" and all of them where give me their attention. As far as I am concerned, talking to your pets can be almost no different then talking with people. You just got to modify it a bit.
