So I've had multiple arguments with a friend of mine on whether or not waffles count as a breakfast item.

See, she claims it is a breakfast item just like cereal or toast, and I vehemently disagree with this barbaric notion.

I live in Belgium. Waffles are part of our culture. It's who we are. And a waffle is something you get from a good waffle stand in the city, or that your grandmother makes for you when you get home from school. Essentially, waffles are not to be eaten at breakfast. Who eats a waffle before going to school?

Waffles are a lunch item if you so desperately wish to categorize it. You eat it during the day, siting on a city bench with your fresh hot waffle. Or surrounded by siblings, friends at the dinner table after school. Not in your pajamas. Barbaric.

Yet she has insisted multiple times, and called me a weirdo. So here I am, against my better judgement, opening the topic to all of you. Enlighten me.

Hmm... now that's an interesting thought. I've heard of pancakes for breakfast, but never really waffles.

Now if you want to really go too far for breakfast, try putting chocolate sauce and whipped cream on the waffles.

Waffles are almost exclusively eaten as a breakfast food in the United States. They are treated exactly the same as pancakes—same toppings (maple syrup, butter, etc.), and often made with the same batter.

The only exception I can think of is chicken and waffles, which would be a lunch or dinner meal, but that's more of a novelty. No one eats chicken and waffles regularly.

Waffles are just pancakes with extra steps over here. But of course it's mostly based on how they're made. Over here it's just the waffle and then some syrup on it, nothing else at all unless you're fancy. I know some countries add a bunch of extra stuff, which would classify it as something more. But if it's just a bland waffle, breakfast.

Yes, waffles are for any meal. I had a chocolate chip waffle a few days ago around midnight. Most people think its a breakfast food but they are wrong. I feel like any food no matter what it is can be any time of day food. I will eat a burger at 8am in the morning and have multiple times. I guess it could be because I work overnights, but most people do it.

I would generally say they are a breakfast item because that's how I've generally eaten them.

However, my family eats them as dinner on Christmas eve when we all get together.

This makes me think that while you could eat them for breakfast they are also good to eat just about any time of day or night. Waffle are delicious and we shouldn't limit their consumption to one time of day.
