Another game I played through the plug n play, Flicky. It was mixed in with Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Dr Robotnik Mean Bean Machine. I used to play this game quite a bit with Mean Bean Machine and it was really fun. Does it still hold up these days or is it just another nostalgic take that my mind is playing?
Story: 6
There’s not much of a story. You’re a Flicky trying to rescue the chicks from hungry cats called “Tiger” while avoiding the felines and Iggy the iguana that come after you. You lead the birds into safety of an “Exit” door and prevent them from falling to the prey. The story isn’t much but it’s at least a simple one to take.

The game was made during the genesis rise and it was pretty basic. The cats and birds look like… well cats and birds in a simple 16-bit console. I’m not sure what they were thinking since the game is seven years old by this time. The arcade version still looks a bit better than the port that came out for the Genesis. The backgrounds look a bit worse than the original, I don’t even know how? Overall, it’s still a good looking game but it’s lacking behind big during that time.

The soundtrack is very limited. I’m not even sure what they did but it’s more high pitched and screechy than the arcade. It’s not much of a Sega sound it’s just high frequency and screeching chirping sounds that’ll hurt the ears if wearing headphones. The music is cute and cheerful but you’ll get sick of it eventually.

The game offers no content other than the original arcade mode and bonus stages. Collecting chicks either one at a time or collectively for bonus points is all I can see that matters if going for a high score. The quicker you get them to safety, the higher the bonus score. The bonus stages usually is just Flicky catching the chicks with a net and gives extra points for the score. Earning enough gives you an extra life and that’s the only viable thing I see. It really has nothing else to offer.

Game is fun at first trying to get the highest score and all but you’ll get bored of it eventually. It just feels like a budget game the more I review about the game and it might had been back then… you’ll lose interest immediately if not going for a high score. I mean a casual play once in a while is fine too but the addictive is

Difficulty : 7
The game is no means difficult. Like I said, it feels like a budget game but it doesn’t have a difficulty of one. Losing a life is practically a mistake of your own and can’t blame any cheap AI or anything. If all, it’s just an easy game to play with little hassle.
It’s a 7 out of 10
My final thoughts… the game feels like a total budget game. It lacks content, it’s easy, the graphics are behind compared to other games made in 1991 or before like Sonic the hedgehog or Altered beast. It’s cute yes and it’s enjoyable but you’ll put down the controller once you get a game over or beat the game. It’s more of a rental than anything if we’re talking about 90s era video game trends.
