I thihnk some people get addicted to world of warcraft because it is a huge rpg game and it is so popular. You get to meet other people and fight monsters to lvl up your own character. You get to vs. other people and you want to be the best, so that's is why people are so addicted to the game. AT the end, there are also new things and challenges that are added. The game is just expanding and never ending.

I don't know alot about World Of Warcraft because I never played it, but it looks like a decent game.

Human nature dooms us. We always want to have more or be more than someone else. In World of Warcraft there are millions of someone else's out there, as well as a near endless supply of loot to collect, and various ways to improve your character and make it better. Some people get caught in it, and will at times loose themselves in it all.

There is no answer to that question. Everyone has a different motive for doing something. Some like how they can 'escape' reality to play WoW. Others get caught up trying to be the best in PvP. Who knows?

But it is a pretty fun game, for me.

Giving games online play is what ultimately makes a game addicting in my opinion, if WoW didn't have online play it would be just another RPG.

Well, I guess the main reason is because it suits their style of gaming. I don't play it, and neither do most of the people that I know, but there are some people who play it all the time, and tell me to play. I don't really play it though, I guess it doesn't suit my style of gaming. And another factor is online play. It makes things that tad more intresting.

Heh, it plays into our natural impulse not to leave things unfinished. Let's face it, who wants to quit when the next level is "just" a few more kills away? And well, now that we've been killing those things, we've wound up awfully close to the end of this quest chain. Oh heck, is that Steve logging in? Well, Really should say Hi, maybe get a six-man instance going, it'll just be a second.

You get the picture. I'm not too keen on WoW, the IP never really drew me in to the game, and the cartoony graphics annoyed me all to hell, but I loved WAR for the brief time I was able to keep a subscription, and the underlying mechanic is the same. We want to complete the next part, to be just that little bit better. Heck, I can't stop grinding untill I hit an even numbered level, or at least get close.

It's easy to get addicted, because it can swoop in an latch onto the subconscious if one isn't careful. It's about being responsible. On that same note though, if they aren't letting it destroy their lives, let them do what they enjoy.

"Addiction" and "Enjoyment" have become too fine a line these days. Ooph.

Exactly, even the most unorganized people have impulses to finish what they are doing, and in the case of WoW, it's simply never finished, causing the mind to become enthrawled into the game until it sucks the life completly of of you.

WoW is a game that has to be played in moderation. There are so many things to do in WoW such as world events, dungeons/raids, farming for matts, playing the auction house, and so on and so on. Generally, an average WoW player can play up to seven hours a day. They can start by doing a dungeon daily, go farming for matts, sell those matts at auction house, and then go on a raid with their guild, and they just spent seven and more hours on a single game. It really makes it worth your $15 per month if your spending all your time on it.

Well when you play WoW for a certain number of hours you get a computer chip of some sort placed into your brain that tells you that you need to play WoW or you will die. Soon the whole world is going to be affected by this and everyone is going to turn into zombies that need to be on the computer.
This is just my theory don't pay much attention to what I have said.

The reason for the success of World Of Warcraft is very simple and had been done before with other MMORPG games - Everquest comes to mind, but I digress. Now that we are in a time where high speed internet is the norm and WOW can be played on just about any decent computer - it's pretty much been the perfect storm as far as addicting people to the gameplay experience goes.

World Of Warcraft is constantly rewarding. Just like any other RPG, when you level up you get new stuff - you get access to new areas and you want to test that out. What seperates WOW from a normal RPG is the fact that the game world is ever expanding, and it's already huge to begin with. The addition of human players around the player character is also a big factor in this.. with so much to do and see you naturally experience all of it at a slower pace. By the time you've hit a level where you can basically go anywhere you want, finish whatever quests you please - you've already been addicted to the meta portions of the game. You've most likely started an alt by now and then at the same time you're probably min/maxing that character and trying to perfect the way that you play the game.
