And so we have come to the end of the streak of Carmen Sandiego reviews (for some reason I haven't run into Word Detective on the PC games list even though there is a page on this site) Once again the version of this game I have is the version that came with background folk music
Gameplay and Story: Been there done that but this time with World, I wish I had remembered to bring up how we traveled in the games because a good chunk of the time we "travel by map" as the muppets would put it. We get a different chief and we have a travel agent that sounds like a less nasally Fran Dresher and of course Warren the Warrant Robot who greets you when you sign into the game as well as helps process the warrants you put together in order to apprehend the crook. Graphics: Okay I have to give props to whoever had time on their hands to actually build an ACME Headquarters I don't know if a computer did that but they made it look so real like it made me wonder if there really was such a place. We have 2D henchmen and women in yet more photos from National Geographic's stockpile, and there are some exclusive crooks for water scenes, and some that are adjusted for water photos, there are also the Courtroom photos and the Hall of Fame, I don't know if computers put that together considering we don't see those in the source information (but then again we don't see ACME HQ in that program either) oh and Hi Sarah Nade (I don't know if she was in the game first or the game show first though) Soundtrack: Okay this has an amazing track list, but I wish this game with a bonus CD of the tracks that were used in the game, most of which are awesome, and it was many years later when I realized "There's gotta be a full version of these songs" so you can imagine how happy and pleased I was when I found out there was, but some where tricky to find because the Broderbund people had mislabeled the songs. Also there was a bonus track that was used in the newer version of the DOS game but didn't get used in the PC version that was released in the Mid-90s. Now this is the part of the review where I bring up the best tracks in the game but I think I am better off sharing the link to the smithsonian folkways page but remember some tracks are mis-labeled or missing https://folkways.si.edu/where-in-the-world-is-carmen-sandiego/music/playlist/smithsonian Addictive: I played this quite alot mostly because I never got another game until August of 1999 Depth: It will take Fifty cases to catch Carmen, and oh by the way remember when I brought up in the other Carmen review about how Zaire was working great in that game? well for some reason the mid 90s re-release not only had another crook dropped (Lady Agatha Wayland, I'll share the video in a bit) but Zaire doesn't work....I'm guess it's because of photo image issues? because when you go to Zaire in the game you hear the audio for the locale but once you get there you get the game exiting error message (and that's the last thing you want to get if you are on the case where you catch Carmen, I learned that the hard way) The CD also came with a Source information program that includes information about the tracks and the photos used, and a Demo for another Broderbund title Alien Tales...a very hard to find game, I actually had to burn a copy of the game from the internet archive. I actually wish Alien Tales got a Learning Company Rerelease, or maybe it didn't because of legal issues, I mean I guess they had to do some legal wrangling with some estates. Difficulty: You raise up in the ranks from Gumshoe to Super Sleuth. And I will admit that I did have difficulties myself in the game because I didn't know that I had to fill out a warrant or something, for about a month and a half I kept asking myself "What am I doing wrong?" I eventually figured it out by chance because apparently the evidence button was there for a reason, it was for filling out the warrant, and once I found myself being promoted to Investigator...I realized I was finally getting somewhere in the game. And yeah this game did give me a good world Geography lesson, I mean sure I easily knew stuff about Canada already because we were focusing on that in social studies at the time...I guess my dad got the game because he knew I was getting pretty good at learning capitals and he wanted me to mentally expand my mind on it. Post Review Follow up: This was the very first Carmen Sandiego game I ever played (you never forget your first) the second computer game I ever received, it took awhile before I got another one like not until August of 1999 (how have I not come across Spellbound and Midnight Rescue on the Windows List? oh no wonder they don't have pages on this site...sorry Ex Palen but the next time I do requests you are going to have your work cut out for you because I have a mental list of stuff that should be added to the site). This concludes my review join me tomorrow when I review another random Sega Genesis game....sign I have to do this four more times I suppose I could put the rest of Road Rash out of it's misery...I think it's time I burned a copy of the Wacky Races PC game and I will review it if I can get it to work. by the way here is what catching Lady Agatha Wayland looks like And this is how Zaire looks in the game I had to play the game on Classic Reload in order to film those scenes.
