I finally 100%'ed this game so I guess it's about time I review it then...
So this is Super Avalanche. This is supposed to be a sequel (I personally see it as more of a remaster) to a flash game called Avalanche. Avalanche was a pretty simple platformer where blocks fall from the sky, and you're supposed to climb as high as you can without getting crushed by them or falling into the lava rising below you.
Super Avalanche is basically the same thing but with TONS of new stuff thrown into the mix. Now we've got boss fights, items, missions, and most important of all, you can customize your little marshmallow dude BECAUSE WHY NOT???
anyways LET'S REVIEW STUFF YAY
Graphics: 8 That's some pretty nice pixel art going on there actually. The backgrounds in particular are pretty nice, and the colorful style in general is also alright.
Sound: 6 It's just fine. I like the soundtrack here but it's not anything all that unique. Not much to say about it.
Addictiveness: 3 There's not a whole here, honestly. Once you reach 2000 feet or so, that's pretty much it. You've seen everything. There's also lots of things to buy from the shop, and they usually have to be unlocked in some way before you can buy them, but I imagine people probably won't care about this all too much.
Story: N/A There is a story here but it's extremely simple. Wizard guy steals staff. Now you have to chase him. Yeah, that's it. I won't bother rating this
Depth: 5 The core gameplay itself it really simple. Run. Jump. Wall jump. Basic stuff. Most of the depth comes from the different items you can find as you climb. They do all sorts of things. There's a cape that lets you boost. A jetpack which is pretty self-explanatory. Goggles that let you detect incoming blocks. And a lot more, too many to list here. At first you can only hold one item at a time, but you can collect these red squares (not sure if they have an official name) which allow you hold more. When you take damage you lose the oldest item you picked up. If you take damage with no items you die. So items basically double as the health system as well.
There are also followers, which are basically permanent items. You can't lose them but they won't protect you.
And finally we've got badges. You can buy them from the shop and you can
select up to three to use before starting a game. They all give some kind of advantage to you, but most of them also have some kind of disadvantage to balance things out. (for example, the Outlast Badge gives you an extra life at the start but doubles the amount of enemies)
oh wow I went kind of wild explaining all that, didn't I? Although all the item systems are fairly straightforward, I think the variety of the items, and in turn the huge amount of possible combinations adds a pretty decent layer of depth here.
Difficulty: 6 It really depends on how far you want to go. The game starts off nice and slow but it gradually gets faster the higher you go, and it will eventually hit blazing speeds. Trust me, I know from experience
Overall: 5 So that's it. Super Avalanche is a fun little game but there isn't really a whole lot here, and the game just feels kind of unfinished (which might actually be true considering the dev seems to have gone out of business). That said, it's only 5 bucks, or usually 2 bucks when it goes on sale, and for that price it is very worth it for this little gem. (if you have a couple thousand
Viz to spare you can probably nab it from the market instead, I think they've still got a few copies lying around)
