Nintendo removing Super Mario RPG was the true loss Vizzed received. If I couldn't have played this when I was a newbie, I'd have been sorely disappointed. Thank you Nintendo, for stopping me from enjoying in the RGR. (Without using my own ROM at least.)

I know what you mean. For me it was Super Mario World. I've always absolutely loved that game. Sure I can go home and fire up my Super Nintendo, but I liked having access to it wherever I go.

Norriegirl93 : Speaking of taking games with you. I'm a handheld nut. So handhelds with emulation are pretty cool to me.

Ever hear of the GPD XD? It's pretty rad for everything before the GameCube/PS2/Xbox era. Except N64 for some reason.

pennylessz : Oooh that sounds really cool. I've never heard of the GPD XD, but I am definitely going to have to look it up now. Lately I've been saving up for a raspberry pi and a large SD card to go with it. It's not really portable in the sense that you mean it, but I can load quite a lot of roms into it and have them all in one place. Although, I think that, like the GPD, it doesn't really work on games that came out after the PS1.

I didn't get into Super Mario RPG until well after I had become a teenager, because I didn't own a SNES as a kid. I owned a Genesis.

When I got an N64 though, I got hooked on Paper Mario. Then on Thousand Year Door on the Gamecube.

Once the Wii's virtual store listed SMRPG, I needed to give it a play.

Such an incredible RPG for its time. I miss all the games being in the RGR.

But with flash going the way of the dodo, does it really matter anymore?

legacyme3 : I'm amazed that it took me so long to discover Super Mario RPG and several other Mario RPG games. I was only familiar with the Mario & Luigi RPG series.

Very recently, I've watched playthroughs of Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and Thousand Year Door. I'm currently watching a speedrun of Sticker Star, which looks super good, but my 3DS is pretty broken.

I agree that Super Mario RPG was such a great RPG for its time. When I was watching it on YouTube, I was blown away by the graphics, gameplay style, and characters! So far, after all the other Mario RPG's I've watched videos of, I still think Super Mario RPG is the best.

Pacman+Mariofan : Sticker Star is the bane of my existence. Can't really agree on that front. They took away XP, so you have no reason to fight enemies. Boss battles are also won by randomly finding items earlier in the level, so there's no real strategy to them. Then most egregiously, they took out just about every character who isn't from the Mario Universe, making every NPC a generic Toad, and half the boss fights are Goombas. There's so much more that just stopped me from finishing that game as well. I've heard Color Splash was somewhat better, but I'm just waiting for them to add badges back and such.

pennylessz : I have noticed that Sticker Star looks too easy. The thought hadn't occurred to me that there's no XP in that game, so thank you for bringing that point up. That bothers me now lol

One big reason I thought Sticker Star looked good specifically to me is that I like the mix of platforming, boss fights, and missions in it. I've noticed that is common throughout the Mario RPGs I've seen and played, but it seems like there's more platforming in Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star. I like Mario platformers the most out of any Mario games so that made those games look the most interesting to me.

Yeah, I think Sticker Star looks good, but I agree it's not good compared to other Mario RPGs. I loved that there were so many unique characters in Super Mario RPG! It is kind of sad that Sticker Star doesn't have that. Also, it's pretty laughable that Mario collects weird stuff like a fan and a bowling ball.

I can see why you don't care much for Sticker Star. I think Nintendo was appealing to a completely different crowd than with other Mario RPG's XD

Pacman+Mariofan : There's a lot of substance in your post.

For starters, I enjoyed Super Paper Mario, I think it was very nice. The helpers in it weren't all that interesting, but it still had level ups, and it had the charming unique characters we both spoke of. I personally don't like it as much as the other Mario RPG's either, I'm a turn based person, but many people love it, and I can see why. I can't see the same for Sticker Star though, as I'll continue to touch on here.

Another issue with Sticker Star as you'll find, is that they lean in hard on the paper gimmick. These games all had a lot of little gags in them, but it's as if they replaced the story with neat little visuals. Let's not forget that Sticker Star has almost zero meaningful dialogue between the start and conclusion of the game. Compare this to any other Mario RPG, and you'll see you're usually talking to almost everyone. These RPG's fill the world with characters you can actually find interesting, but you can't do that with only Toads, at least not very well anyway. There is something that works in its defense though, while simultaneously distancing me from it even more. This game essentially isn't even a Mario RPG. It was stated that since Mario & Luigi is around, we don't need two Mario RPG series, and that has a lot to do with why it turned out the way it did. It is by all accounts, a turn based adventure game. This would honestly be completely fine with me, if they had stuck to platforming, and kept the battles out of it. They're pointless, and you probably could've made the boss' more interesting if you did incorporate platforming. Besides these, I really just can't get into the OST, which is strange considering I love music played on horns, and I hate the over world map. SMRPG used a map where you pick location, presumably to save space. How were they supposed to fit a giant world you can explore in with all the other content? It already had boundary pushing graphics. However, with Sticker Star, they're essentially just emulating a NSMB map. It makes me want to play a normal Mario game, why would I play a Mario RPG that's almost like normal Mario, but way slower paced? Not to mention, the map is significantly more interesting in SMRPG, from what I've seen anyway. The plus side is that since this technically isn't a Mario RPG, it can't be compared on the same playing field, so people can defend it with that.

Anyway, M&L may be gone forever, so I hope they veer towards a more RPG direction with those now. Speaking of platforming also, those games have quite a bit of it.

pennylessz : I agree that the helpers in Super Paper Mario aren't very interesting. They have a cool design, at least. I've noticed that Sticker Star does way more with the paper concept. I like the "peeling stickers off of walls" that's in the game, but those stickers are everywhere.

I haven't finished watching the playthrough of Sticker Star I'm on yet, but so far I have really enjoyed the dialogue. I agree it's not that meaningful, but at least I find some of it funny!

Ooh yeah it would've been cool to see some platforming in the boss fights. It seems that the music for Sticker Star is very different from most Mario RPGs. It seems to fit more with the platforming. In the other Mario RPGs I've seen/played, I've noticed the music fits well with both the platforming and exploring the level. In Sticker Star, it doesn't fit both in my opinion.

Lol the world maps in Sticker Star are quite weird and unfitting.
