November is upon on us and that means Winter is one month away. However for some places November brings the first snowfall and that can mean avalanche. Except today I will not be talking about the weather event. Today, I am going to be reviewing a puzzle game called Kirby's Avalanche. Lets see how this game compares to similar games.

Story: 8

It is time for the annual Avalanche Championship Tournament in Dreamland. King DeDeDe was the previous champion and Meta Knight was the champion before King DeDeDE. Kirby enters the event hoping to become Dreamland's new Champion. However, it will not be easy as Kirby must defeat several characters. In addition, he must go up against the previous two champions King DeDeDe and Meta Knight. The player controls Kirby in his quest. To do so you must match or get 4 beans or marbles of the same color to connect . Also you must make your way to the championship round by going through several characters.

Okay, I actually like the plot here and that is saying a lot because most puzzle games are not known for their stories. But this one has a creative story to it. Having a puzzle championship is kind of creative it offered something new to the Kirby Series. In most Kirby games its usually Dark Mind or Dark Matter as he is sometimes called invading Dream Land. Another game saw King DeDeDe try to raid kitchens in Dreamland. It actually feels like a Kirby game with all the main characters in it.  I give the story  good solid 8 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 9

The graphics are very good for this type of game. The beans or marbles are very bright and colorful. The sprites match the characters very well. Also the backgrounds go along with the different levels. In fact, the graphics are almost the same as another similar game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. I will get to that in a little bit. I think the graphics are pretty good considering unlike other Kirby games there are not any long stages in this game.

The controls are pretty good and moving the beans/marbles is actually easy and smooth. That is pretty much the only control in this game is trying to control were the marbles land or match. Not one time does the game have a lag to it. In some puzzle games lags are common. But not this game. Overall, I give the graphics and controls a 9 out of 10.

Sound: 7

The soundtrack in this game is very good.  The tunes I find to be relaxing for this type of game. I have found puzzle games often have relaxing tunes which is good, considering you have to concentrate sometimes. The sounds the game makes when you advance, lose, or match marbles is very good.

However, they are some parts of the sound that could have been better. The announcing voice changes as you go to different characters. The change in voice can actually give a scratchy sound. Sometimes the voices get soft and loud. I don't know if that was done on purpose or did the makers of this game have different voice actors. Either way the announcing voices could have been improved. Thus, I give the sound a good 7 out of 10. The scratch sound of the announcers brings it down a little bit

Replay Value 8

Kirby's Avalanche is a fun game to play even though it is a copy of Pyryo Pyro and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Machine. It offers its own spin to those games by including Kirby Characters. If your a Kirby fan who doesn't like a game that has Meta Knight in it. Also this is a game that offers something different than typical Kirby Games. This is one of those games were its fun and can be relaxing at the same time. I find myself playing this game when I want to take a break from my other favorite games.

Depth: 5

Like Most puzzle games the game suffers somewhat in lack of depth. As I have explained in my other reviews. When I think of games with high depth of I think of Mega Man, Mario, and Most Kirby Games. In those games there are secrets to find, different paths to explore, items to collect and the stages are usually long. In this game there are none of that. However, there are some depth to this game that keeps it from getting a low rating. The main thing being there are 13 characters to get through 16 if you include the 3 training levels. That can take awhile especially if you lose. So this is a game that despite there being no long stages it takes awhile to conquer. Second, some of the puzzle battles can take a while especially once you advance. So I give the depth a middle of the road rating of 5 out of 10.

Difficulty: 6

The difficulty in puzzle games is hard to rate sometimes. For some people these games are easy on the other hand some people might find these games difficult. I tried to rate this game from neither an easy or hard point of view. The game does try to help you out by letting you try three tutorial stages. These stages you learn how to blend the marbles and the game gives you techniques you can use to help. Still there are some difficult parts in this game.

The beans/marbles are random so you have to make do with what colors your given. Also if you start getting your box full of marbles the pace picks up. If your opponent gets an avalanche it puts you in a tight spot that will require skill and creativity to get out of. The bosses (characters get harder as you advance just like in DR. Robotnik's game.  I really did not start having problems till I got up to the 10th boss. As I hinted above if your box gets full the pace picks up. Well, that is true also as you advance. The last 4 characters the pace really picks up a lot. This game requires you to adjust your strategy and techniques a lot to advance.

I give the difficulty a 6 out of 10. Its not a real easy game but not real hard either. However, as I stated there are some things that can make this game a little difficult. But its the right difficulty for a puzzle game. The game challenges your skill, creativity, and quickness. But at the same time the game is not too difficulty that once would easily get frustrated.

Overall rating 8.4

Kirby's Avalanche came out in the mid 1990's one year after Sega released Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Yes that is right Kirby's Avalanche is a copy of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. But both games were a copy of a Japanese game called Pyro Pyro. Sega took the Japanese game and used their characters. Nintendo couldn't use Mario because they already had the Dr. Mario puzzle line. So they changed the characters into Kirby Characters. The result was Kirby's Avalanche.

Despite this game being a copy of other games it is still a good game to play. Kirby's Avalanche is a good puzzle game that is fun for people of all ages. I really had fun playing this game. It seems to offer something new to the Kirby line while keeping the same characters. The story for this type of game was neatly designed. The colors are very clear and are not fuzzy at all. The graphics for the most part are nicely done. The themes in this game is very good. The difficulty is just about right for this type of game.

However, there are a few negatives in this game. The main thing being the announcers voice. It seems like Nintendo hired different voice actors for this game. Now in a game like Mario, Mega Man that would be fine since you have a lot of different characters. But in this game I am not sure if that was needed. Plus why does the voices get soft and loud. That never really made sens to me. The thing that is kind of annoying is the scratch sound in the voices. It makes me wonder if this game was kind of rushed  a little bit. What I mean is did Nintendo feel like after Sega made Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine that they had to get a similar game out quickly that they didn't test the sound out? When this game came out Nintendo already had or was making Donkey Kong Country Series, and Yoshii's Island. Even though the game is good I think the sound is kind of sloppy at times and it could be that Nintendo rushed to get this game out. I also wonder if maybe Nintendo put more time in their other projects when it came to sound.  Those are really the only  negatives in this game. To most gamers these would be very minor

Overall i give the game an 8.4. Its a solid and fun game to play. This game is fun from the young to the old. It would be a great game to introduce a child to. It is also a good game for adults to play as well. This game can be addicting as you advance. The negatives I mentioned may not bother most people. This game has a lot going for it. I must say Bust a Move, Dr. Mario, Robotniks Machine and this game are my favorite puzzle games to play. So the question is would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. It is one that I think you will enjoy and have fun doing so. I highly recommend it. So in summary 8.4 sounds about right.

You must have really hated the announcer for this as its the main complaint. I used to own this game, that is actually the only thing about it was the goofy voices. (Waaaadle-Deeeee) (super bass voice: HEAVY MOLE). Is that what you're talking about, the abrupt tone issues? If so, I get what you're saying, I just thought you'd score the sound lower to make up for it the oddly non-Kirby voices.

endings: Yes that is what I was talking about.  The music is what kept me from giving the sound a rating lower than a 7. If it was not for the music I would have gave it a much lower ratting
