Hello again, friends and other folks of this website! I’m here again with another review, this time on a game that never seems to die. That’s right folks, today I’ll be reviewing the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Before I get into the actual game though, I’d like to talk a bit about the background of the series and some bits about the game that don’t exactly fit inside the game itself.

The Elder Scrolls series is based in the continent of Tamriel, a land full of strife, monsters, and magic. Each game focuses on a specific kingdom/land of Tamriel, and takes you all over the specified land to complete quests and save the world from complete and total destruction. Thus far, about 4 or 5 areas have been explored in the main games (Breton’s home High Rock, Dark Elves home Morrowind, Imperial’s home Cyrodil, and Nord’s home Skyrim. The first sorta went all over Tamriel, with no specific location.)

Skyrim is definitely the most famous of the series, becoming so famous that many people (especially ones I know) don’t even realize it’s actually part of a series. It was a breakthrough in the world of gaming, changing the field of game design drastically. It continues to hold a high player count even after all these years, and continues to hold incredible ratings. This game is, quite honestly, going to go down in history. Which is why I’d like to review it all for you guys, and show you just why this game is the powerhouse it is.

Let’s get into the review, shall we?

Difficulty

Difficulty is a bit of a hard one to rate for this one, simply considering the fact you can change the difficulty at will. The game can be a cakewalk if you choose it to be, or it can be a actual nightmare for you. I was playing for the story and to relax after doing a lot of stuff, so I never really played it in a way that would challenge me. It can be a bit confusing at first, I admit (but that was mainly me wanting to get into the story and ignoring the whole control’s bit of the tutorial haha. Could’ve saved myself a lot of trouble if I didn’t completely ignore that stuff.)

So, difficulty is a bit tricky to actually pin down for this game. I’ll give it a 5, put it right in the middle, because that honestly seems like the path of least resistance there. Cause, again, you can either make it really easy or make it really hard. It’s all a matter of choice in the end.

Graphics

The graphics, as far as character models go, isn’t… Exactly the best in my opinion. I dunno, I don’t find it super appealing. But, I don’t believe they were going for ‘pretty’ and ‘appealing’ with the game in mind. The graphics are probably average these days, considering its age. I find the land itself to be fairly pretty still, but the character models just haven’t aged all that well. However, you can get mods that update the graphics and make the land astonishingly beautiful (well, unless you’re a PS4 player. Sorry guys!) and makes it much easier to immerse yourself.

Keep in mind though, I am not including those mods in the graphics rating. I’m only going to consider the graphics and other bits of the game as itself without mods, considering that A.) not everyone will want to use mods and don’t care about adding them, and B.) not everyone can use mods (again, sorry PS4 players), so it would be unfair to rate it that way with those people in mind.

With that said, I give graphics a 7, simply due to the fact I personally don’t like the character models, but can’t say that they’re completely awful (plus, again, the land is very pretty).
Sound

Skyrim’s soundtrack is, quite honestly, very good. Its voice acting, however, isn’t exactly the best. I love the music, it is very high energy and I constantly lose track of time listening to it. They did swell with picking music that fit the scene you found yourself in, and had music that just blended incredibly well based on the kind of terrain you were in. It ranged from very mellow in the forest, to the intense boss music you would expect in a game like this. But, the sound rating gets brought down due to the less than stellar voice acting. The fact that they use the same voices over and over again isn’t too much of a bother, really, simply because if the fact the game is gigantic and I don’t expect every single character to have a different voice. However, I would expect characters that are considered important would have their own voices. The voices also seemed to lack the proper emphasis, and just seemed kinda… off. They could’ve done a lot better with the voice acting
.
With an amazing soundtrack but subpar voice acting, Skyrim gains a score of 7. Again, love the music and how they use it, but they could’ve put more time into the voices they used in the game.

Depth

Skyrim has a insane amount of depth. Like, wow. The amount of stuff you can do in this game still astonishes me. When I first picked up the game, I thought it just had a few side quests and this huge quest you had to focus on. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that that is not at all the case. Skyrim makes it so you can do a plethora of quests, while having no need to progress the main quest to reach everything. To fully complete the game (do all the quests, all the achievements, etc. Etc.) you’d have to pour hundreds of hours into the game. Heck, I’ve poured hundreds of hours into the game and I’m still not finished with the game!

I’d like to mention mods again real quick (and once again, sorry PS4 players), as there are also plenty of mods that allow you to get even more out of the game. Plenty of modders add their own custom quests into the game, and some of them can even create entire new worlds/lands out of the game (but that’s pretty much PC, so looks like both us XB1 folks and PS4 folks lose in this aspect). But, again, since it’s extremely limited to who can actually take advantage of it, this will not be included in the actual score. Just wanted to mention it for those who can actually take advantage of it.

Anyhow, even without mods, the amount you can do in this game will keep you busy for hours upon hours. I give it a solid 10.

Addictiveness

If someone tells you that Skyrim isn’t addictive in the slightest, that person is seriously lying to you. Skyrim is probably one of the most addicting games out there, in my personal opinion and also the opinion of pretty much any other source. Again, this game is about 7 years old now and it still retains such a high amount of players. This game is incredibly hard to put down, especially when you get really into the quest your doing or into the story itself. I recall playing this for so long and not realizing how much time I had spent. It just feels like you aren’t doing a lot and you just want to keep going. It’s not hard for me to get hooked in usually, but it’s never been as hard to put something down as it is when I play Skyrim.

There’s no way this wouldn’t get a 10, now is there?

Story

And now, we reach the story! Finally nearing the end, huh guys? Anyhow, I love the story Skyrim uses. Not because of just the huge main quest,  but the story many of the side quests also tell. The main quest is pretty cool, I admit. I love all the choices it gives you, and how much it can change certain things. I love the fact that you can really shape your own tale in a way, as there are many details you can choose to ignore. Maybe it doesn’t change the grand scheme of things, but I like how it really lets you choose what your character can be. I just… I’m attached to this story I guess! I love the fights, I love the tiny details that change when you do certain things. I love the sheer amount of content the story has to give, from side quests to main quests.

Maybe it’s not the most compelling story for many, but it’s still interesting. Plus the fact it tells many stories while staying true to the tale. It’s not something super story driven, maybe, but it’s entirely up to you what story you wish to tell. For that, I give story a 10.
Overall

And now, the end. As I tend to do, I will do a personal score (where I don’t consider the whole break down and just rate it as a whole), and the actual score (the score I get when I tally up the totals from the breakdown).

Personal Score: 9

Now, you’re probably wondering why I gave it a 9 while I’ve been basically singing its praises this whole review. Answer is simple really, and isn’t something this review system really covers: the sheer amount of issues the game has.

This game can be very buggy, which makes it so you can’t do certain aspects of the game. I remember my first play through the game, I couldn’t do the Thieves Guild because of a bug that broke Brynjolf (the guy who lets you into the Guild). I’ve seen many odd bugs as well; not all of them ruined the game for me, many were silly, but some were just very frustrating to deal with

There’s many people who attempt to patch those issues since Bethesda doesn’t and most likely never will, but that will disable the achievements. Might not be a big deal for some of you, but I’m the type of person who loves doing achievements. I’d give this game a solid 10 if it didn’t have all those issues. But alas, Skyrim is notorious for its bugginess and Bethesda is notorious for not going ahead and fixing a lot of it.

True Overall Rating: 8.1

As I stated, it’s a truly phenomenal game. The way storytelling goes with the game makes it easy for you to weave your own tale, and also has a lot of interesting lore behind it. It is incredibly addicting to play, and has so much to do that it takes hundreds of hours to get anywhere close to doing everything. It’s not easy to rate the difficulty due to the simple fact that it allows you to choose if you want it to be hard or not, so we just left that in the middle. The sound pulled it down, not due to the soundtrack itself but due to how voice acting was handled, and the graphics also pulled it down as it hasn’t aged well for the character models, though the landscape remains beautiful to look at.

Though not included in the rating, I wanted to mention for those who just want the summary: Mods can greatly enhance the experience of the game. They can give you amazing graphics, fix the bugginess of the game, and/or give you entirely new stories to mess around with and much more to do if you ever manage to complete everything the game has to offer.

Thank you all for reading my review, or the summary at the very least, and I hope that you found this very informative and enjoyable. Please, tell me what you think about the game and/or this review, I love hearing feedback.

Nice review! I like your writing style, it makes this truly an enjoyable read.
I'd like to see reviews of the Pillars of Eternity games, and Tyranny from you!
Is there any chance it's going to happen?

I love Skyrim, its probably one of my top 10 games of all time, but I can only play with mods now becuase I played so many hundreds of hours with them, that when I tried to play without them, I hated it.

Skyrim with mods could probably deserve a whole review of its own lol.

Good job.

Although I'm not really much of a fan of Skyrim, or the entire Elder Scrolls series for that matter, but I do have to say though, it is quite an interesting game none the less, being one of the most popular franchises in Video Gaming history.

zanderlex : I think that is the biggest reason why Skyrim (any the rest of the Elder Scrolls series) is so popular today, mostly reflects of all the modifications that others has made for the series, if it wasn't for those modifications, I personally don't think that the Elder Scrolls series would of taken off to levels that we see today.

As for the review in general, this is a pretty well-written review, you wrote it all in separate pieces and all in order, and it's not all over the place, easy to read. Great work.

IgorBird122 : I think it's less because there are mods but more because Bethesda is accepting with them.

You look at Nintendo and they'll shut down anything that has to do with a game. Bethesda welcomed mods with open arms and even started making their own. If they started being like "you cant do this, we're gonna sue you" it would have been a whole other story.

zanderlex : I think mostly the reason why Nintendo is a little weird when it comes to modding any of the games on their consoles because they have kept their own avoiding their games getting modded, bootlegged, and hacked and they have stick with that for the past 3 1/2 decades.

Mostly it reflects with the whole mess with Atari and overloading the market with modded games and home-brewed games to a point that the 1983 Video Game Crash and the 1983-85 Great Video Gaming Recession happened, and I think that Nintendo is avoiding that in case another Video Gaming Recession hits, that's at least my theory though.
