Mega Man 3 came out in 1990. Three was the game that really established Mega Man as one of the industries most popular video game franchises. It also established him as an icon. Mega Man 3 was a big hit selling millions of copies after its release. It is regarded as one of the top NES games of all time. It should be no surprise that there are a lot of hacks of Mega Man 3. Mega Man 3 Ultimate is a hack of the original game. For my review I will be comparing this version to the original as well as other hacks.

Story: 9
The story was left unchanged from the original game. Dr Wily seems to have come to his senses and rejoins Dr. Light. The two decide to build a giant peace keeping robot named Gamma. However, to power Gamma they need 8 crystals in the mines. The robots there suddenly go crazy. Mega man is sent out to stop the crazy robots, find out who is in charge of them, and bring the minerals back to power Gamma. Just who is in charge of the robots, why did they go crazy, and has Wily really reformed? Mega Man sets out to get the answers.
Okay I really liked that the story was left unchanged. Mega Man three had an awesome plot and story to it. The plot creates mystery, suspense, and yes there is a plot twists later in the game. So no change was really needed. So I will stand by my original rating of 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls 8
The graphics are pretty much unchanged from the original game. The only difference is the stage layouts have been altered. A few of the backgrounds have been altered too. But the colors, and sprites are left unchanged from the original game. Now, the graphics do seem to lag in some spots. Mega Man 3 the original game did not have any lags at all that is what made it so great. This one has a few lags. Since this is a hack I expected a few lags. Its nothing terrible but there are a few times where lags occur.
Mega Man 3 is regarded as having near perfect controls of the NES Games. The controls in the original game where just amazing. If anyone has played 3 which a lot of people have you know what I am talking about. If you have not played Mega Man 3 then I highly recommend  you play that game. Anyway back to this version though. The controls are a little off in this game. It seems like there where a few times where the controls changed speeds on me without warning. Its not horrible like some other hacks but I could tell a difference from the original game. Thus, that brings the rating down a little bit. I give the graphics and controls a decent 8 out of 10 rating. Its still very good it just has some minor issues.

Sound: 9
The sound in this game was left unchanged from the original game. Mega Man 3 really established the trend of amazing music in Mega Man games. A lot of the tunes are still popular today. They have even appeared in non Mega Man Games. I still find myself pausing the game just to listen to the music. Spark Man, Shadow Man, Gemini man and some of the fortress stages are my favorite. I was glad this version did not change a thing. Mega Man's buster still has its classic sound and the enemy shots still sound about the same. Since there really was no
change. I stand by my original rating of 9 out of 10 for the sound.

Replay Value 8
The replay value of this game is high. Mega Man 3 was so awesome and was a game you played again and again. This version may not be as good as the original game due to its minors. Still, the replay value is very high in this game. I had fun playing this game and it is certainly one I will replay again. Despite the minor issues I mentioned above this game still has the charm that the original game had. Also this is one of the better hacks of Mega Man 3 I have played. So I give it a good replay rating of 8 out of 10.

Depth: 9

Another tradition that Mega Man 3 started in Mega Man games was the high amount of depth. Mega Man 3 had secret passages, hidden items, and mystery blocks to find. Also the stages where very long. This trend continued in future Mega Man games. This hack really did not change a thing. Even with the layouts changed from the original game the high depth is still present. The stages still have mystery blocks, stages are still long, and there are still secrets to find. So since the depth was not changed at all I feel like my rating stays about the same 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 9

The original Mega Man 3 had a difficulty rating of probably about 6 maybe 7. The original game did have some trick spots and hard bosses. But once you got used to the game it was not too difficulty. The maker of this game made things a lot more difficult this time around. The stages have more traps than they do in the original game. Death Spikes and Pits have been increased in this game. So there is a good chance you will fall into one. Also the enemies have become more durable and take twice as amount of hits as they did in the original game. The Robot Masters are faster, their attacks do a lot more damage. In addition, weapons use more energy. As stated regular enemy shots do twice as much damage. So this game is not easy, there is a good chance you will die at some point in this game. So why does it not get a 10 out of 10 rating?

Well, the game does try to help you out. The game is good about dropping extra lives so if you die and are running low good chance an enemy will drop a 1-up. Second, energy tanks are very easy to get in this game. A lot of the stages have one sometimes even two energy tanks. So if a boss is giving you trouble you can pick up an energy tank in the stage. You can have up to 9 energy tanks. So that is why I do not give this a 10 out of 10. I have played some hacks mainly the Ridley hacks where the game was just brutal. In some of the Ridley hacks of Mega Man 3 energy tanks and extra lives are rare in those games. So while I was playing this game I was thinking okay its difficult, tough, and can be aggravating. But it is not brutal like the Ridley Hacks. The difficulty is tough in this game but it seems like it is doable once you get the hang of it.

Overall: 8.5

For this to be a hack the maker did a real good job of developing this version. The game has a lot going for it even though it retains a lot of the things the Original Mega Man 3 game had. Unlike the original game though there were some minor issues I mentioned. Before, I get into the negatives I want to talk about the positives.

I like how the maker did not change a lot in this game. I have played other hacks that were well just sloppy. The plot did not need to be changed we even have a cut-scene in this game. The original game did not have one until the end the story was just in the booklet. So seeing a cut-scene that explained the plot was something different. In addition, I also like how the sound was not bothered at all. Changing the stay layouts while using the same color background as the original game was done nicely as well. It makes me think the maker was trying to add something different to a classic video game. That is evident by the layouts. I think the goal was to try to make players forget they were playing a different version of MM3. The depth was left unchanged which was nice. As stated Mega Man 3 started the trend of depth in Mega Man games. The difficult might bother some but it was nicely done. I like games that offer a challenge. This version certainly does that for sure.

Now this game did have some negatives. The first negative was the lags. There are not a lot of lags but they do occur. This being a hack I expected a few lags. Sometimes I wonder if makers who make hacks use older software? The good news is the lags are not long and really does not impact the gameplay as they do in some other hacks. The other negative is the controls were not as sharp as they where in the original game. The original game had some of the very best controls. This version sometimes I noticed the controls changed speeds. It would seem like they would speed up or slow down. Again it really did not effect the game play. But it was noticeable.

Overall I give the game a solid 8.5 rating. I had fun playing this game and I will play it again. Its hard to top the original but this game was nicely done. I would say this is one of the better Mega Man 3 hacks I have played. Some of the other MM3 hacks I have played have been so-so. Would I recommend this game? Yes If your a Mega man fan  and novice player by all means give this game a try. I believe you will like it. The issues this game has are very minor and may not be an issue to some. What might turn some people away is the difficulty. This game is difficult as I mentioned but doable. If you get frustrated easy I recommend playing the original game or another hack called Mega Man 3 simplified. Those two games will let you get used to the controls and all that. So yeah 8.5 sounds about right.

This is a solid game. I hope you take time to give it a chance. I also hope you enjoy it as I did.
