Time for another game review and the game a reviewing is Mega Man 5 Strike. MM5 Strike is a hack of Mega Man 5. Mega Man 5 (original game) was released for the old Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. The original game was a success and often ranks in the top 100 NES games of all time. So it should be no surprise there are hacks out there of this game. For my review I will be comparing the game to other hacks as well as the original game.

Story: 9

The Story is left unchanged from the original, which is good because the original game had an awesome plot to it. A new army of robot masters is released upon the world and are bent on taking over. In the meantime Dr. Light gets kidnapped. Mega Man sees a yellow scarf belonging to his brother Proto Man. Has Proto Man gone crazy, is this really Mega Man's brother doing this, or is somebody else trying to frame Proto Man? Dr. Cossack who Mega Man freed from Dr. Wily in Mega Man 4 upgrades Mega Man's buster. Armed with a powerful buster Mega Man heads out to, stop the carnage, rescue Dr. Light, and see if his brother is really doing this.

Okay as I mentioned the original story was very good, so I was glad they did not change it. Mega Man 5's story offered suspense, mystery and creativity. Players did not get the plot twist till later in the game. Therefore, I stand by my original rating of a very solid 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

The original game had very good graphics and controls. So how does this version compare to the original game. Well, the stage layouts have been changed. I actually think the maker/makers did a good job with the layouts it offers something new for sure. I also like the color backgrounds they are similar to the original game's colors. The sprites have been left unchanged. I did notice though there are a few glitches in this game though. Sometimes the game will freeze up. At first I thought it might be the emulator but I tried it on another emulator and got the same thing. The good news was the game unfroze itself. Another glitch was I was on the ladder and fell right through. That reminded me of Mega Man 1.

The controls were for the most part good but they where not as good as the original game's controls. The original Mega Man 5 had very good controls. Sometimes this game's controls seemed off at times. It seemed like there was a few times where Mega Man felt sluggish. However, that is really the only main issue. Overall, I give the graphics a good 8 out of 10. The glitch brings down the rating some.

Sound: 10

Mega Man 5 had very good sounds in it. The music was awesome. Stone Man, Crystal Mans, Charge Mans and Napalm Man's stage themes are my favorites in this game. I would often pause the game just to listen to the music. Mega Man's buster sound was a powerful bang to let the player know their shots where doing damage. The enemy shots also had a pow sound to let the player know their shots do damage. Well this version did not change a thing concerning the sound. I am glad because did I mention how awesome Mega Man 5's sound was. So no changes where really made. I give the sound a 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 8

Mega Man 5 was one of my favorite Mega Man games. So each time I learn of a hack of Mega Man 5 I have to play it. I have played some very good Mega Man 5 hacks. This one is one of them. I had fun playing this game. It may not be as sharp as the original Mega Man 5. But it is a good solid game to play. I will certainly play this game again. I give the replay value an 8 out of 10.

Depth: 9

Mega Man 5 had a huge amount of depth to it. In the original game there was letters to collect, hidden rooms, splitting paths, and secrets to find. This game maintains all of that. There are lots of hidden items to find, powerups to collect, and lots of splitting paths. I would say there are more splitting paths in this game than the original game. Mega Man games are infamous for their depth. In fact, a lot of the hacks have a lot of depth to them. The stages are about the same length in this game. So therefore, I give the depth a very high rating of 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 9

The difficulty of this game reminded me of the Mega Man 5 Ridley Hacks. Those games where brutal in terms of difficulty. Mega Man 5 was not a too difficult game. This one though is. All I can say is be prepared to die in this game even if you are a good Mega Man player. The game is difficult or brutal for several reasons. The first one being a lot of the places are very tight and narrow. This makes dodging super difficulty. It also makes jumping very difficult too. In addition, there are spikes and pits galore more so than the original game. It is so easy to miss a jump and fall right into a pit. Also, enemies are in very difficult places. The enemies just love to gang up on you in this game. To make matters worse they like to do it in the very tight areas. Enemies move faster than the original game and their shots do a lot more damage. The Robot Masters have new tricks making their fights difficult. Robot Masters now move quicker, have faster attacks, and they just love to fake you out. What I mean is when you think you need to jump to clear them they charge right into you. Moreover, the robot masters do a lot more damage.

Now you may be wondering why do I not give this a 10 out of 10 if is that brutal. The reason why is because Mega Man's buster is still powerful that can do a lot of damage. Also extra lives are plentiful in this game so if you need a 1-up you most likely find one. Still this is a very difficult game so I give it a 9 out of 10.

Overall 8.5

Mega Man 5 Strike is a good game and has a lot going for it. However, there were a few negatives. But, before I get into the negatives I think it is important to go into the positives.

This game has a lot to offer. I think the maker or makers where trying to take the original game and change some things around to seem like they were offering something new. That is evident by the stage layouts and increase difficulty. I really like how the makers did not change the story or sound. The story and sound in the original game was very good. I did not mind the makers changing the stage layouts. To me that seemed like something new. The game is a fun game to play and if you are a Mega Man fan then you will enjoy this game. Also the game has the same amount of depth as the original one. The difficulty has been increased but that also offers something new. While the game is difficult its doable.

Now for the negatives. I hated it when the game froze up for a few seconds. It made me wonder if the makers was using different software. Also the ladder glitch can be a problem. That glitch reminded me some of Mega Man 1 and some of the Ridley Hacks. Mainly because it shows you have climbed the ladder or landed on it but you still fall through. Again I wonder if it was a software issue. I also did not like how sometimes it seemed like Mega Man had sluggish controls. It did not happen a lot but it did occur in a few spots. The original game did not have any of those issues in it.

Overall I would have to give Mega Man 5 Strike a good rating of 8.5. As I covered above the game has a lot going for it. However, it seemed like something was missing. What I mean is it is a good game but not as sharp as the original game. Maybe it feels like something is missing due to the glitches and controls. Aside from that though this game was a very fun game and I enjoyed playing it. I think the game is good considering this is a hack. Would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this but only to Novice players. The reason being this game's difficulty. New players to the Mega Man series would get frustrated with this game. Also if you are a gamer that gets frustrated easy then this game is not for you. I would recommend new players to Mega Man play the original Mega Man 5. The original game was not too difficult and will get players used to the controls. But if your a veteran player or a novice Mega Man player by all means play this game.

In conclusion Mega Man 5 strike is a solid hack of the original game and one you should check out. Anyway I hope you enjoy this game like I did.
