CastleVania II: Simon's Quest
It only takes about 1 minute of gameplay for the player to realize that Simon's Quest was so much different to the original CastleVania game. Konami were one of the companies that took a risk and tried something new. Their history of games were made up with a large number of side scrolling action video games and by that time it was predictable what they were going to do next. The market was fooled, just like they were when they thought they could breeze through their other games.
Before I get started I would first like to say that in general CastleVania: Simon's Quest isn't a good game. However it isn't a bad game either. The problem is, people are enthesizing the bad points of the game. A well known example is the Angry Video Game Nerd. The list of toilet humor insults and swears targeted at this game was so overwhelming people are taking his word for it. What he and many other people are forgetting is what is actually good about this game...
Graphics - 9 / 10
The original CastleVania for the NES already had a decent amount of detail and effort put into the visuals. It wasn't the peak of the NES but it was reasonably high up their. Konami were clever enough not to just settle their. Other companies producing for the NES and SEGA Master system were really beginning to understand the capabilities of 8-bit a lot better than they were earlier on in both console's life span.
Konami caught up with a lot with the pack by making a lot of enhancements to the original sprites and tiles. The biggest thing you will notice is simons sprite. In the first CastleVania simon was a orange man. Pretty much the only colors simon was were orange and white.
With Simon's Quest we witness the slightly wider use of the color pallet. They cleverly used the white to create lighting effects on Simon's shoulder pads and knee pads. And now the sprite consists with an extra obvious color.
Many other sprites have been improved. Skeletons look much better, with the shading effect they actually look 3D and stand out from the rest. All of the villages look great. They really show out the NES's capabilities. The list does go on...
So why did I give it a 9 out of 10?
While the list does go on for quite a while there are some really bad sprites like the angry bear. This doesn't bother me so much since the good sprite work is overwhelming so if it was just that I'll give it a 9.7 out of 10 but there was something else that made me less generous.
The design doesn't really work well. Some of the enemies just don't belong in a CastleVania game. Skeletons, Bats, Mummies and Medusa (stupid medusa heads!!) all belong in a castlevania game. Enemies like Bears and strange humanoid frogs things just don't suit this. While the majority of them look good all of this effort was put an unfortunate waste. I even think that those frogs belong in Mega Man somehow!
Sound - 8 / 10
We are going at 2 positives in a row so far, the sound effects and soundtrack is great in simons quest!
Again the sound effects were another thing that Konami wanted to enhance from the original CastleVania. The whip in CastleVania II sounds far more relatable to a real whip than before and the death of an enemy sound effect is just some how more satisfying. People usually take it for granted the sound effects but it is really difficult to get something sounding that good and it to work on the NES. On FamiTracker, a program to create 8-bit music that can run on an NES, it took me a very long time to even create a half decent sounding snare drum sound. Back then they probably had it even worse off then I did with Famitracker so I really do respect the effort.
Moving onto the soundtrack, it is really good. The compositions may not be as good as Super CastleVania IV's soundtrack but still it sounds great.
You are greeted with one of the games best songs just you are in DOOM and, again, Super CastleVania IV. After the town comes the first route. The church organ there really makes you feel in the mood for CastleVania and many other songs in the game do the same treat. However once that dreaded text box appears while not in a village the music changes to the night theme.
The night theme is the same wherever you are. Not only is it bad but it really gets on your nerves since it is really over played. There are a few other not so good songs in the game but this one... oh boy it's certainly not good!
Gameplay - 5.5 / 10
I have been praising CastleVania II a lot in the last two sections. When we push all of the fancy graphics and nice soundtrack away Simon's quest isn't a very pretty image anymore.
While I really admire Konami's ambition what they did wasn't quite right and there were a few issues that made this game bad. For the next few paragraphs I wont be comparing it to castlevania since they are very different games and it almost makes my review unfair if I did so.
So let's begin with the start of the game...
Konami went for an RPG approach. When you press start and the "Game Starting Player 3" sign fades out you are in a village. You approach the first NPC and press B to be greeted with a speech box. The text is taking some time to appear so you press B again thinking you can speed the text up but instead it disappears only so you have to press B again for it to reappear again.
You may think at first that this isn't too much of a problem and that it just takes a bit of getting used to but you be so sick and tired of it when you are trying to find hints to progress, which you almost need to since the game is deliberately un obvious.
Staying on topic of the NPC's giving you hints. Some of them are vague riddles you have to work out and some even lie to you! Konami are well know for unforgiving difficult games but this is truly unfair.
Ok so after talking to all of NPC's and doing all of the tasks there you are out in the open up against your first enemies. And defeating them is fun. While it isn't that hard you still need strategy for it. As you expect the game does get a lot harder towards the end yet it still isn't
that difficult. The difficulty is about right for the type of game it is trying to be and it works really well.
I gave the addictiveness a 6 out of 10 since I really do enjoy whipping enemies knowing that I am making progression quickly. That is fun! Though the are a few things that ruined that experience.
Firstly there is the transition to day and night. I like how Konami were trying to be clever by introducing a day and night rotation system but the time it take to change a background is crazy!
As Demonstrated in a rom hack of simon's quest it has nothing to do with the capabilities of the NES. The Hack sped the event up! I already mentioned the slow text but with that and the dramatic fading in and out really makes the experience really boring.
Secondly you do too much traveling which isn't much of a problem but what is, is the fact that you have to keep going over the same ground again and again. In a way you would expect this in an RPG game which is what Konami were aiming for. For instance in Pokemon you often have to go through the same routes over and over and it isn't too much of a problem since the routes that you must re visit are not too long and tedious.
Paths just go on for ages in this. It shows a lot of depth and shows off but since it is the same events for long periods of time. The fast progression I was talking about just doesn't happen anymore. You just have deja vu all of the time and it ruins the game.
What get's worse is when you see the game over screen. When you press that continue, you guess, you are back at the beginning of the game. 3 lives... no continues, you really do need the Konami code!
To be fair there is a password system to get back to where you were but that is tedious to do.
Overall - 7.2 / 10
This games has great heights yet many little flaws that build up to be game changing. I really do not recommend this to anyone even when the classic tight controlled movement is addictive. This game was ruined. I could of been very good. That hack I mentioned is good.
You may have to travel a lot still but it fixes the other things like the slow text and the "What a terrible night to have a curse" day and night transition. I am pretty sure it also has unlimited continues as well.
If you want a good experience playing CastleVania II: Simons Quest go and play the hack of it. I am sorry Konami but this was a let down...
But hey it is still a lot better than any of the crappy N64 CastleVania games. 3D.. What were they thinking!! XD

Simons Quest review   Zircron Swift
I always knew one day I would play Simons Quest for the NES. It was my destiny. I had dreaded it, as I have heard bad reviews of it not nearly as good as the other games. I have also watched The Nerds review on it, and made it final I would never play this game (yet I played Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on the NES, despite The Nerd saying do not play it on any accord. That didn't stop me, and I turned out to like it). Yet the game nagged me a little, very slightly for me to play the game everyday. It urged me to journey through out the land collecting Dracula's body parts. It wanted me to die by falling through the walls that looked the same. It wanted me to play the game. To torture me. At first, the urge was weak. But over time, I just had to play it. And so begins the final review in the retro saga.
One thing I want to point out first is that after you press start, you get to choose to start game, or to enter a password. The graphics are scrambled at the top. And in the password screen, the graphics are even more scrambled. rest assure that this is just the game, and the game works perfectly. Ok, lets start with the story. This has a more in depth story than the other games. Instead of the normal "get to Dracula kill Dracula wait 100 years", you must find Dracula's body parts and put him together to rid his curse from Simon. Simon was cursed from Dracula when Simon slayed him. So you must travel to five different mansions and get all his body parts, defeat Dracula and be rid of the curse once and for all!
I had to admit, when I first started playing this game, I instantly enjoyed it. The music was great, although it seemed ti have less music than the first game, which is a bit of a shame. In the first game, each level has it's own music. Here' there's only a theme, as in, day theme, night theme, mansion theme, etc.  Although the music in this game is limited, it does have better music than the first game. The one most people remember from this game is "Bloody Tears". This piece is so great, it appeared in future games such as, Super Castlevania IV. If the game has Castlevania in the title, even if the game isn't so great, and as long it's not on the N64, the music will be great.
The graphics are also nice, but the enemies too are limited. Instead of having a whole load of different enemies, they just used the same six or seven and recoloured them to make them stronger. Yeah, that's creative (sarcasm =P). So I have to move from town to town, collecting hearts to buy stuff, which is odd, because who wants to trade in hearts for a dagger? The people of Pennsylvania are pretty weird if you ask me. You can talk to the town folk and they might give you a handy hint. Other times, they just give you useless dialog. One of them is "Lets live here together" Riiiiiiight.....Wait, where have I heard this before? I heard it somewhere before, I just can't put my finger on it.
The game play has some flaws in it. Someone says that "A magic potion will destroy the evil wall." You can easily work out that the magic potion is the "Holy Water", but what is the evil wall? You would expect it to look different to the ordinary wall. Otherwise how would you tell evil from normal? Well, as it turns out, evil wall looks like normal wall. So next time to see an empty room, throw some holy water and you might find something that could help you, for a price of course. What are people going to do with all these hearts anyway? Another thing that many people will agree on is the transition from day time to night time. Why must it interrupt your game play like this? Why does it take so long? Why can't it be smooth like in Friday the 13th on the NES? Well, your going to go through this quite a lot. And it's going to get annoying. Especially when you get enough hearts and you need to go and buy that item, and just when your on the foot of that door....WHAM! "What a horrible night to have a curse." pops up and you need to wait some time to get that item. I have realized that it feels better getting from night time to day time. Might as well fight some zombies and get your exp up.
Oh yeah, it wouldn't be a proper RPG if you didn't have exp. When you collect some hearts, you get a bit of exp as well. Once you get 100 exp (for each new level, the exp you need to get increases by 50)  you'll level up and get more health. That's it, no increase of weapon power or anything like that, just an increase of health. Although this can be pretty helpful, as when you level up, your health also gets restored. So when your low of health, grab some exp to the next level and your problem is solved. One thing I have noticed about this game is when you die, you don't re-spawn back at the beginning of that stage. You re-spawn back exactly where you died, give the excuses of dying in water or a marsh. This is rather odd, and you expect to re-spawn at the beginning of the area, then you would walk forward normally and WHAM! You fall into some water and die. Then you get a game over and lose all your hearts and exp. If you die once, you get to keep your hearts and exp. It's only at a game over than you lose it. Now, normally this makes sense and seems fair, but when you re-spawn at where ever you died even at a game over, this gives the impression that it's unfair.
Another thing that's weird is the health bar. Normally, it would be white and the red bits are your lost health. But here it's the reverse. This can be confusing as your bar is red, and the white bars are lost health. It even starts from the bottom and goes up. This gives them impression sometimes that you are in fact getting healed instead of hurt. I once jumped into some poisonous looking stuff and I though it was a healing spa or something. I then turned out to be dead. Now lets move onto the mansions. The are, overall, a good level design. But three things get my goat. The first one is the missing blocks. They look like you can walk on them, but you could fall through them and waste your time. The only way to know that they are there is to throw something on the ground like Holy Water or the Sacred Flame. I don't see how this is fair, but to be honest, this doesn't happen too often. It's pretty rare in fact, but keep your wits about you in mansions.
The second thing is the oak stake. Someone offers you an oak stake for 50 hearts. Why? Why can't you just give it to me for free? Well you pay the 50 hearts, and assume it's a weapon. The Holy Water cost 50 hearts, and you could use that as many times as you like, but not with the oak stake. It's used to open the orbs at the end of a mansion, and you only get to use it once. Maybe the an in "an oak stake" might have given it away. But it might have helped if you didn't make it seem like a weapon by putting it on the same line as the Holy Water. The third thing is a lack of bosses. there are only three bosses in the entire game. Death, that weeping sad face, and Dracula. And there are five mansions! And the bosses are way too easy. Death in the first game was murder to defeat. That's why I liked him as a boss so much. Here's you could just walk pass him and take no damage. What a disgrace! They don't even make you fight the bosses. Although you should, as you are rewarded when you defeat them. They are easy to defeat, so it's worth doing.
Look at those spikes. Looking all pointy and shiny in blood, even if they don't appear to have any, they plan on having mine in. It just wouldn't be a Castlevania game if there weren't spikes in it. *mumbles* Go away spikes! No-one loves you! Instantly kill me will you? Kill me when I just lightly brush against you, will you? Well, how do you like it when I jump over you? Arrrgggg! Mis-jumped.....wait a minute.....the spikes.......the spikes don't instantly kill you....The spikes don't instantly kill you! They did something right with the spikes! THEY DID SOMETHING RIGHT WITH THE SPIKES! *runs outside and grabs the first person he sees by the shoulder* They did something right with the spikes! *runs off into the marketplace* They did something right with the spikes! *suddenly on top of a hill side* They finally got something right with the spikes! *after a moment, he returns back to his seat* Sorry about that. But can you believe that they did something right with the spikes? Before, just touching the spikes will kill you instantly, which seems unfair if you just walk on them or just touch the side. It's like having your arm cut off if you mis-spell a work and you were going to correct it anyway. It's ok if you get crushed by them or fall into them via a pit, that applies force. But if you just touch them, you should only receive some damage, not die straight away. This is the only game I know that does this. Oh what? I have an obsession with spikes? No, no, don't be silly....They are my arch-nemesis! Yeah, it's a long story, now where was I?
Ah yes, some things are almost impossible to figure out. So when in doubt, throw some garlic or select a crystal and hold down for about five seconds. Although to be honest, they do leave some clues that are hidden in "evil walls" for you to figure out, so that's good. And this game, despite the flaws, it rather enjoyable. It even has some sweet features, like almost all of Dracula's body parts has a power you can use. The most helpful is Dracula's Rib, which deflects fireballs, as long as you have it selected. That's pretty nice of them to give you a power-up after you collect parts of his body. And as you go along, the selection of enemies does get better, such as mummies, ghosts and ravens. If only they gave that to the mansions....
Overall, I give this game a 7.9/10 This game plays like a Castlevania game, no matter the flaws. In fact, I really enjoyed playing this game. It's really fun to play and deserves a little more respect. So I'll have to disagree on you Mr. AVGN on this one. This game is worth a play, even if it is a little anti-climatic and not as epic as the others. In fact, this is the only Castlevania game I know that doesn't get to Dracula the normal way (walk up stairs at a 45 degree angle, drop down a little, and walk on a bit to enter the counts room), but that's besides the point. The point is the music is great, it has a lot to offer, and the game play, even though it's a little odd, it still fun. Get those body parts!

Castlevania II Simon's Quest Review   dazzsheil
Time for ANOTHER Castlevania Review....jessh this is my second Castlevania review in a row and coming off Super Castlevania IV(which I Declared the Greatest game of all time by the way) And going onto Simon's Quest? Well, Castlevania II Is not THAT Bad...its just flawed.....nearly all games have flaws. Look at Ocarina of Time one of THE Most critically acclaimed games of ALL TIME It has flaws( The market scene is blurry) Castlevania II Has it's fare share of flaws but that does not dieter from it's awesomeness. If you have the Spare 500 Wii Points...go to your Wii Shop Channel and give it a try....it's a flawed game sure but it ain't ASSSS(Like a certain Nintendo Nerd said)
GRAPHICS: The scrolling is good and the animations are good....though that said the game looks depressing and the animations on monsters get repetitous.....even the original Castlevania had way better graphics
SOUND: One of the all time greats,Castlevania II Has one of the NES'S Best soundtracks to date...of course the track that stands out above all of the rest is the truly Awesome: Bloody Tears. Better than any other NES Castlevania even the almighty Castlevania III : Dracula's Curse
ADDICTIVENESS: Not the most addicting game in the world...but I Do play it from Time to time....RPG Styled games are meant to pull you in for long times but this...just fails miserably...Castlevania was meant to be a linear game from the start.
STORY: One year after his demise, the ever alive count Dracula laid a curse on the man who vanquished him,Simon Belmont. After returning from Aeon's time rift( Castlevania Judgement,Wii 2009) Simon was told that a curse was laid on him by the Count and that he had to burn Dracula's remains to rid of him for good.
DEPTH: As an RPG With a lot Of(but useless) NPC's Simons Quest is Satisfactory but there's not alot to do after you vanquish Dracula so the game loses a few vital points...
DIFFICULTY: Don't look into the Death Star or else you will die....what the poop? This game has ridiculous jumps,is cryptic as the insides of an Xbox and is brutal during the night parts. Bosses are hilariously easy though
OVERALL: Simon's Quest like Zelda II Was a sequel so it's good for Konami to experiment and learn from their mistakes. I actually think that this game is the yardstick for all future Castlevania's. I Give Castlevania II: Simon's Quest a 7.9/10

Is this game as bad as everyone says?   Guitarguy472
If you heard of the game Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, you might have heard that this game is terrible and that you should never play it. On the other hand, you might have heard some say that it's actually not that bad. Me personally, I don't think it's as bad as some would say but at the same time, it isn't my favorite Castlevania game in the series. So with that in mind, I'm going to be reviewing Simon's Quest and listing points, both good and bad, hopefully without trying to persuade anyone on their opinion. Let's get started...
Graphics: Visually, this game looks pretty good. Yeah, some SNES and other future games look better, but at that time Castlevania 2's graphics weren't too shabby looking. The character sprites and background look darker than say Castlevania 1, giving this game a darker atmosphere and I think it was pretty good.
Sound: You can hate this game all you want, but I think we can all agree that the music in this game is awesome! This was the game that brought the ever famous song, Bloody Tears. It's so catchy, that it's pretty much remixed in just about every other Castlevania game. The sound effects in this game were also good, but the memorable sound track is what gives a high rating on the sound.
Addictiveness: I might play this every now and then, but I have to be honest; this isn't the first Castlevania game that I would go back to playing. Yeah there are different ending (which I won't spoil), but the endings all depend on how fast you beat the game so it's not like it adds any replay value. I guess I just prefer the more linear side-scrolling Castlevania games like 1, 3, 4, etc.
Story: I actually really like the story in this game. It's better than your average Castlevania story where Dracula's resurrected, doing bad stuff, and you have to kill him. Instead, the story takes place after Simon has defeated Dracula. He finds out that a curse has been placed on him and the only way to break it is to find all of Dracula's body parts that had been separated and put into different mansions, return to the ruins of Dracula's castle, revive him, and to kill him once and for all. As you can see, the story is a bit more in-depth than say its predecessor.
Depth: This game is really big and has you do a lot before finishing it. It kind of reminds me of Zelda where both games let you talk to people in different cities, explore new areas, collect items, and visit dungeons (in this scenario, they're known as mansions). All in all, this game has a lot to offer.
Difficulty: This game isn't too bad in terms of difficulty, but at same time it is. The reason I say it isn't that hard is mainly because of the bosses, which actually aren't that many. As a matter of fact there are only 3 bosses in the entire game including the final boss and they're all really easy to defeat; but what makes it even more sad is that you don't even have to fight them (except for the final boss of course). You can walk right past them, grab Dracula's body part, and just ignore the boss again when leaving which I think is lazy designing. So you may be wonder why I rated the difficulty up to 7. Well remember when I said that this game is really big? You can get lost easily because of it. Sure you'll probably get past the first mansion easily but after that, you'll have no idea on where to go. Now you can talk to people and you might find some useful information, but some advice that some people give actually don't help at all and leave you even more confused. As a matter of fact, the only way I beaten the game was by using a guide on the Internet. Would I be able to beat the game a second time now that I know what to do? Probably, but if you play it on your first time without a guide, it's very likely that you'll get lost.
Overall: I think Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest is an alright game. As I mentioned, there are some flaws but there's also things that make up for it. Should you go buy this game on virtual console or on eBay? That's up to you to decide. However, if you can find a way to get for free like through an emulator or on RGR, then I recommend you give this game a shot so you can come up with your own opinion on Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest.

Castlevania II   Oldschool777
Overall=7.5
Castlevania II is kind of the odd duck in the NES trilogy. They were trying to make the game non-linear and free world and I think they failed at that. Non-linear should not mean without direction or a guide or some sort. It should be more like the Mega Man games, you can tackle the stages in any order you wish. The graphics are nice and spooky for an NES game, the enemies are a bit repetitive if not typical. The bosses seem a bit on the lazy and sluggish side. The sound is good and I like the music. Now the game has multiple endings, depending on how fast you finish the game.
Graphics=8
The graphics are nice and the atmosphere is spot on. The castles are creepy if not stereotypical. You do have phantom blocks in the castle, but a decent way to find them is use your holy water to see where they land. You also have walls that have to be destroyed by holy water, which is somewhat counter-intuitive to anyone that played Castlevania. The enemies are nice if not expected. You move nicely and look good cracking the whip, especially the later whips.
Sound=8
The sound is pretty good and the tunes are catchy and memorable. The effects are nice and you can tell what happened by the sound. The music is nice, but you will hear them in the town theme, the exploration theme and the castle theme. But if guys like BrentalFloss can make a song about it and a video, then you know the original creators did something right.
Addictiveness=7
It is a fun game. Now the AVGN did paint a bit of a harsh picture of the game and it does deserve some of the strikes against it. No game will ever be perfect. People will always find something to whine about, from it's too hard,it's too easy,it's unfair, and so on. Now I do hate the knockback that happens when you are struck and it always seems to be near a ledge or another enemy. But if you can gird your lions and summon the spirit of gamers past, this is an enjoyable trek through Transylvania. You have multiple endings, depending on how fast you finish the game and that is incentive to do better. Be warned: This is most assuredly a Nintendo Power-type game, you will need a walkthrough to help you conquer Dracula.
Story=6
The story kinda makes no sense,Dracula is beaten, but you are cursed whenever night falls. To break the curse, you must find all of his body parts, reassemble him,and fight him again to lift the curse. I mean,if you find the body parts, why not just pour oil over it,light it on fire and be done with it? But the exploration is fun and is filled with all sorts of enemies that want payback on Simon Belmont. If you can put aside the silly premise, you should have fun with this game.
Depth=8
You are always looking for items for sale, new whips, new weapons, and the body parts. You will need a walkthrough to help beat this game. The items are all scatted throughout the game and if you want to stand a ghost of a chance you have to find them. It is also a bit of a grinding game, you have to collect hearts, which act as currency. When night falls, the enemies are twice as tough and if you are in a town, you have to beware of zombies and bats. The day/night system is fun,but you will see that "What a horrible night to have a curse." text  pop up at some of the worst times.

One of the biggest gripes I have with the game is that Simon is kinda stiff, the controls are serviceable but it feels like you are wading through syrup and the jumping can be a bit of a pain, especially some of the floating blocks and ledges and you have little room for error. You have to time it perfectly to make the jump. The day/night thing is done well and it seems about even, but you will be praying for the "The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night." text. You will need a walkthough to navigate the non-linear gameplay. Think of it like Zelda II,when they tried to do something new. This was a lesson in, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I give them props for trying something new,but this is when they should have stuck with tried and true. If you can summon the spirit of a true gamer and have the will to keep slugging though, this game is fun.

Castlevania 2 is not that all bad!   dekker101
OK guys this game is OK its not bad i know AVGN review was harsh and you all trust in that guy but come on give it some slack.OK at the time there were trying some thing new at the time.OK 1 Graphics its was better than the first and things had good detail but the pallet was just lazy i mean making one town gray was just dumb. 2 Sounds for this game the sounds were great the whip sound was better death sounds were better and the music was awesome this was the first game to have bloody tears witch was awesome. 3 Addictiveness OK sure you beat the game but theres no way that your going to play this game again but thing is the game long and it was OK not bad OK. 4 story the story is now more complex now, the wounds that Dracula has done now gave you a cures and only way to get rid of it is bring back Dracula and kill him again if you beat the game slowly then Simon dies in the end if you beat it fast Simon lives, thats a cool story, 5 Depth oh this game is big REALLY BIG!!! and miss on thing your going to back track a lot talking to towns folk does not help its all hard to understand and some of them lie to you like that one guys who said the women at the lake likes garlic thats a lie and when you do find out what to do its not in proper grammar like words in the game are miss spelled so play this game with walk thur, even so you have to read the same old thing every 15 mins "What a horrible night to have a cures" and you cant skip it but the thing is it tried to make you sacred . 6 OK other than not knowing where to go, all the enemys were easy and some places don't have bosses and when they do you can just walk right past them but the big flying face guy you need to beat him and Dracula theres a easy way to beat him. over this games OK this game theme was horror and fear not action so its OK play or not don't matter. PS the morning sun has vanquished the horrible night.

Fun but flawed fusion with the formula of Castlevania   endings
Sometimes developers try radical ideas. Super Mario Bros2 plays quite differently from Super Mario Bros 1. And Castlevania II: Simon's Quest tampers with the foundation of the first game by adding in rpg elements. First off, this game includes night and day, which runs off a internal timer in the game (which you cannot see).  You can backtrack in this game, you go into towns and talk to people, collecting clues, healing at churches, and buying a variety of evil-purging items like holy water, garlic, magic crystals and whips. The first game had one big castle you explored through levels, and it is done away with in this sequel. You visit several castle-like 'manors', who always hold enemies, floating platforms and invisible walls, spikes and other things to foul up your journey. Also, the hearts that used to fuel your secondary weapons is also here, but now is also a form of currency, and come in different allotments. It is biting off a lot, but the idea of actually exploring the countryside and seeing what Simon the monster hunter can do is an interesting one.
One bad translation later, we have this game. It tries, and I give it credit for that. But its just not as fun as the first game was, or the next.
Story: 6
After defeating Dracula in the first game, it turns out he cursed Simon Belmont (the main character in this game as well). If Simon doesn't return the 5 body parts of Dracula to his fallen castle, Castlevania, the curse will never be lifted.  Simon cannot rest, and at night all the enemies grow stronger to try and kill him. As many nights as Simon stays up, I would think he must be running on fumes the whole game.
This part I'm fine with.
I'm not sure how Dracula's followers stole the body parts then hid them rather than give them to Dracula, or if you put them in the manors why you just can't get them. Somehow the parts are in these houses, and... the parts are not guarded. Its a huge let down that there are no monster bosses that make appearances (one does, but even then he's optional). The whole game is woefully short of bosses, and that was a big part of why the first was so successful and memorable.
Graphics: 6
The characters look OK, they lack details, such as Simon being bereft a face, and cardboard cutout looking wolfmen you first meet. Not all are bland in design - the skeletons and fish men look great, and Dracula himself if you finally reach him is creepy and imposing. The backgrounds fare better, the gloomy pines over the lake, the dark forests, the graveyards, they look quite nice on the NES.
The towns are large (at least in building scale) but quite dreary and empty. There are only three or four layouts for town interiors, making everything cookie cutter. You already know where to try and break blocks with holy water, just try the two locations that have always worked.
As befitting Simon's curse, the outdoor backgrounds change to night periodically, and some enemies vanish completely to be replaced with different ones. All enemies are tougher to kill during night, and give out better rewards. The nights do seem a little bit longer than the day, but I suppose Simon would see it that way, being hexed and all.
Sound: 6
A good mix and fitting the horror theme with a bit of rock as well, with the great Bloody Tears being the best of the bunch in my opinion. I also like the music from the password screen and the game over - all of them heavily feature organ type sound which works well with this series. The music to Dracula's castle, the ruins of Castlevania build up nicely. NES games usually did not have a lot of music, and this game also features probably less than 10 tracks.  The tunes I liked least were Dracula's boss music, and the music inside the manors. Both of these songs are used for the final encounters - to acquire a story piece (from the manor) and to finish the game by beating Dracula, I found both underwhelming.
Addictiveness: 5
The idea of a sprawling, non linear map for Castlevania was a bold idea, and one that ultimately worked later.. in the 2000's with Symphony of the Night. Here though, the limitations of technology kept this from becoming all it could be. You can get lost easy, as there is no built in game map. You are also forced to upgrade silly things like crystals and buy laurels and wooden stakes to solve simple parts of the game. For instance, the wooden stakes are used to get the items of Dracula. No you don't use them against a vampire boss, I told you, this game is woefully short on bosses- you throw it at.. a crystal ball. Yeah I don't understand either, but its just padding to make your game longer if you don't have one.
The translation in this game is also very bad, which is very bad when you rely on the villagers to tell you what to do. I was stuck at a part near the end, due to bad translation. My stepfather, who was also playing it, figured it after a few hours with dumb luck. There is a version of Simon's Quest with a better translation, and while I haven't played it all the way through, it looks much better from what I've seen.
Fun can be had here, but its more about rpg elements like upgrading your whip, seeing what the objects of Dracula do (all of them do something beneficial for you), and exploring the land. Just expect to get a bit lost now and then.
Depth: 7
Backtracking is huge here, and there is a lot to see for a NES game. Some manors can only be reached at the end of a path, forcing you go to back until you find another. Simon has a lot of different items to use here, in a way his inventory screen is more reminiscent of Zelda games. A multitude of optional weapons are there for the taking if you choose to seek them out.  There are a lot of hidden books to find (though fairly pointless overall), if one wanted to. There are also different endings, from bad to good, depending on how long it takes you to beat the game, the more secrets you seek out, the more your ending will suffer, unfortunately.
Difficulty: 5
Knowing just what to do next is part of the issue eventually. Again, the lack of a real opposing force hurts the game - there are only two bosses and one can just be walked right past if you like. I found both woefully nonthreatening. Dealing with the regular enemies, planning a route and being able to buy what you need are the only issues.
Overall: 6.5
I like Castlevania II, really. I can see the potential in it. But a lot of it just didn't work as well as it probably should have. The bad translation, the lack of serious enemy threats, it felt underwhelming. And with you being the famous vampire hunter, I found Simon buying everything a little insulting. Good try, Castlevania. But I'm glad the third sequel went back with the original format.

Castlevania II - Simon's Quest Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 8
Castlevania II - Simon's Quest is one of those RPG-like games.  The game play is good, but I think that the first one is better than this game.  Literally, this game has so much bad things that is not fair and not cool.
Graphics - 9
The graphics are amazing in this game.  The images are just better than the first one.
Sound - 9
The sound is very good.  It is basically the same sounds from the first one.
Addictiveness - 3
I would probably not play this game more than the first one because it is just messed up.  I would even play the third one even though I have not played it yet.
Story - 6
The story is good.  Simon has to get all of Dracula's parts and put them together to verse him.  What I do not get is why would you go and do that to revive him back.  It just doesn't make sense.  I would just leave the pieces alone and just move on, but no, they just had to make this stupid story.
Depth - 8
The game has more features than the first one, however, it is too confusing.  When I started playing this, it looked like it would be a fun game to try out, but instead, you have to get stuff and have to go to some places to get things and then get this and that.  It is just too complicated in this game.  I would kill myself if I was Simon, just saying.
Difficulty - 8
Don't get me started on the difficulty.  It is obviously hard.  Like I said, you have to do a lot of things in the game.  The enemies in this game is a little harder.  What I do not get is the stupid day and night thing.  Every 5 minutes a little dialog box pops up saying that it is going to turn night.  When it turns at night, the shops are closed and the enemies are even harder.  It will also tell you that it will change daytime whenever.  I think that this is just ridiculous to just pop up randomly to stop your game for about 10 seconds.  Doesn't that get annoying?  What happened to me that every time it would change the daytime, I always end up jumping on one platform to the other in mid air.  What would happen if I hadn't made it?  I did make it to the other platform by the way, I just had to hold the button of it would think that I am free falling.  Another thing is that you don't know where to go when you are playing the game.  It is just way too complicated.
Wrap Things Up...
Castlevania II - Simon's Quest is one of those cheap games that kind of rip you off.  I wouldn't recommend trying this game, don't waste your time on it if you've never played this game before.  It is good graphics and sounding, but the game itself is just too complicated.

Castlevania 2: Simons Quest on NES.   Stevie 764
Here is a game review of Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest on the NES.
How to play: The game takes place in "Translvania". You play as Simon Belmont, who finds that Dracula has been resurrected, and he has to gather the 13 clues to find him and destroy him. You have 3 lives, you can't get any 1-ups at all, you can continue infintly, there is a password system, the password contains 16 characters. You can earn hearts from enemies, which is currency in this game in which you can use to buy things from people in many towns. If you Game Over, you lose every heart you have, so be cautionous. There are 3 different sizes, small (1 heart), medium (5 hearts), and large (10 hearts). You can earn EXP from hearts also, so weird, but it is kind of nice. You can level up 6 times by earning a random number of EXP. if you Game Over, you lose every experience point you have, but you don't lose any level ups. There are a few kinds of whips, you have the regular whip, the thorn whip, the flame whip, I don't know if there are others. The controls are the same as the first game. You can go into churchs in the day time with a cross symbol on it and you can refill your health there, it is the only way you can refill your health other than from level ups.
Graphics - 8
They look kind of nice, every town has some different colors, some blocks are gray, the designs look good for the NES standards. Nintendo does such great jobs when coming up with graphics. I shall greet the graphics to the 8 column.
Sounds - 9
The music and the sounds perfectly fit with the game. The music is great, the night time music, the day time music, and a few others. I don't need to complain about the sounds. I shall put the sounds rating in the 9 column.
Addictiveness - 7
The game is good for the NES, but I always find that the game seems a little weird to me. Not that it is that weird, but atleast Nintendo is awesome at making video games. I give the graphics a 7.
Story - 6
The story is pretty nice, the story says that Dracula has reappeared, and you go to Transylvania to rid the world from Dracula for all eternity by finding the 13 clues to Dracula. I give the story a 6.
Depth - 9
Unfortuantly, there is no saves. Thankfully, there is a password system so you can continue from where you were. But this game is very long, and it is so confusing that I superly recommend that you use the password system. I give the depth a 9.
Difficulty - 9
This game is very hard, very confusing, and that there are so many limitations to difficulty, but this game is outrageous in it's difficulty! I give the difficulty a 9.
Overall - 7
The game is a good sequel, but it does have flaws, like having no 1-ups, no health items, and a few others. Other than that, this is a good game. If you want to try this game, go ahead, be my guest. ;)

Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest Review   starwars293
Hey guys, this is starwars293 with another game review. Oh boy, this is one of my least favorite game. I am going to review Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest. God I hated this game. The game was really different compared to the other Castlevania games. This game is the hardest game I have ever played in my whole gaming life, ever
You pretty much play as Simon again in this game. The game takes place 7 years after Simon defeated Count Dracula. Simon has to now find all of Dracula's parts and revive him before he dies from Dracula's curse. This game was really hard for me. You could pretty much skip the first two bosses and take two of Dracula's parts in a mansion. However, you need to fight the two bosses to get a certain weapon which will help you fight Dracula.
The whip you start with is a leather whip now. You would usually have to whip a candle to get a whip upgrade. In this game though, you have to buy the whip's upgrade. There is the Flame Whip upgrade that you can get, but you need yo find someone in a certain dungeon in the game. The only way you can pay is by paying with hearts. Usually, the hearts would represent how much sub-weapons or how much magic you have left. In this game, the way that you can get hearts is by killing the monsters. You also need to buy the sub-weapons by using the hearts.
The enemies here in the game are really hard and annoying. There are wolfs who jump around, eyes that follow you until you move on to the next floor or part, and you have Dracula. Death is also in this game. He isn't really hard like he was in the first Castlevania game. He just throws sickles at you. If you have the Flame Whip, you can kill him easily with it. You also fight Carmilla's mask in the game. Just use the Flame Whip and you should be able to defeat her. Finally, you have Dracula, he is the hardest out of the three bosses. There is an item that can make you invincible for a while. I can't remember what it's called, but it will help you. You should have like at least 10 of them. Use it and stay in one stop. Or this is an easier way. You can use a sub-weapon that can throw flame walls. Use it on Dracula once you first see him, use it until he's dead. Once that's done, you finish the game.
The ending, well there are three endings in this game. The Best ending, the Good ending, and the bad ending. The best ending, how you can get it is that you need to beat the game in less then 7 game days. For the good ending, you need to beat the game in 7 game days. Finally, the bad ending, you need to beat the game in more then 7 game days. Now lets move on, shall we?
Graphics-The graphics are good really. Nothing wrong, just the way should be. The enemy's sprites are pretty good really. The jumping wolfs' legs move when they jump.
Sound-Oh my god! The sound is awesome. The best one they have in the game is Bloody Tears. If you want a sample of it, search it up in Youtube. That was one of the best soundtracks in the game.
Addictivness-I wouldn't want to play it again. The game is really hard to beat. I would just play it again because of the music. I would just walk around, killing monsters and zombies while I listen to the music. I wouldn't beat the game, I would just listen to the music. That would be why I would play it again.
Story-7 years after Dracula's defeat, Simon Belmont is on another quest again. This time, it is different. He has to travel across Transylvania collecting all of Dracula's parts. He has to revive him and kill him again before he dies from Dracula's curse.
Depth-It doesn't offer that much really. It take a lot to beat the game really. You need to buy whip upgrades, fight more powerful monsters, and fight the three bosses. It takes a lot to beat the game
Difficulty-Oh boy. This game is really hard to beat. I don't even know why Konami made a game like this. I mean, sure they added some good soundtracks, but did they have to make the game this hard? If it wasn't really hard, then i'm sure people would love this game.
Overall-I do find this game good by soundtracks, but I find it bad by the way it's hard. It doesn't have to be this hard though. If Konami didn't make it really hard, but made it a bit easy and a little bit hard, then I would be sure that people would love this game.
Wrap Things Up-Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest is a hard game to play. I wouldn't recommend playing the game, but if you want to try the game out, you can. I can't stop you from playing it, can I?
This has been another starwars293 review

Simon's Quest of AWSOMENESS   poopywyatt

Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest is a direct follow up to Konami’s

Castlevania and is a sequel in terms of story. It seems like Konami, like other
developers, attempted to do something creatively with their sequel instead of
rehashing the same Call of Duty/Halo/Madden game all over again (No offense
Call of Duty/Halo/Madden fans). Here in American, Super Mario Brothers 2 was
radically different from Super Mario Brothers 1. Additionally Zelda 2 was completely
different from Zelda 1.  Likewise, Konami
decided to do something different now, which I think paved the way for games
like it and for the direction the series would eventually take in the future.

Story: After Simon Belmont defeated the evil Count Dracula

in the previous game Castlevania, Simon discovered that Dracula placed a curse
on him before he died. This curse would cause Simon to quench in excruciating pain,
until his eventual and early death. Simon now has to travel the countryside of
Transylvania (I think), find the five different pieces of Dracula’s body  which are residing in different mansions,
take them back to Dracula’s castle, resurrect Dracula and then defeat him once
again. I think this story is explained in the old instruction booklet, but I do
not remember. The in-game story is not well explained. In fact I always thought
the in-game story never made any sense.

Music: There are only a few tracts in this game, but boy did

they get them right! The famous “vampire killer” came from this game. This song
itself is worth the price of admission. This song continues itself down the line
of Castlevania games and has MANY official and unofficial renditions. I am
aware this game gets a lot of hate, but if this thing does anything right, it
is the music.

Game Play: This game is a 2-d side scrolling adventure in a

similar fashion to Metroid, and thus makes it the first “Metroidvania” game
(even before Symphony of the Night). Right from the start, you are allowed to
go almost anywhere you want with little direction as to where to go. There is a
general series of events and items to be obtained before progression can be had
at certain points of the game, but you are free to do things in any order. You can
go to any of the mansions in any order you want. You will be obtaining a white
crystal, which can be exchanged for a blue crystal and this crystal is necessary
for you to get into one mansion. This blue crystal has to be exchanged for a
red crystal which is needed to call a tornado to pick you up and take you to
another area of the game. If that all sounded weird and cryptic, then you are
normal. I have played this game so many times that all the secrets are second
nature to me. However if I were new to the game, I would be completely clueless
without a Nintendo Power magazine or Gamefaqs. This game also has several sub weapons;
all but two of them are optional. The required sub weapons are the holy water
which is used to break blocks and locate pitfalls, and the other is an oak
stake which is used to throw at an orb in one of the five mansions and turn it
into one of Dracula’s body parts. All of Dracula’s body parts also have a
function. The eye allows you to see hidden objects. The heart allows a ferry
man to take you to different path to another mansion. The rib acts like a
shield and will probably be the most used passive item in the game. I think the
nail allows you to whip blocks that would normally be taken out with by the
holy water. I do not believe the ring has any function.

This is also one of the first games to have multiple endings

depending on how fast you beat it. One quick note; time stops while you are in
the mansions. This makes any supposed grinding in the mansions more worthwhile.

Speaking of grinding, this game also has minor RPG elements.

Defeated monsters drop hearts. Hearts act as both monetary currency and ammo
for sub weapons. Money can be used to buy oak stakes, whip upgrades, and other
items.

Difficulty: This game is on the easy sides of gaming. It is

only difficult if you do not know what to do. Other than that the plat forming
is easy, all three (yes, only three bosses) bosses are ridiculously easy, and
traversing the countryside is easy. You will occasionally run into some small
blobs which can be a nuisance.

Addictiveness: I found this very addictive and I have tried

to make up different rules/objectives for beating the game for fun. I go
through binges with Castlevania 2/Castlevania 2-type games.

Final Thoughts: This is one of those games that it seems

everybody loves to hate on…but I never understood them. I have ALWAYS had a ton
of fun playing this game whether it be as a youth, teenager, or as an adult. This
game is not as bad as everybody says it is. Just like Super Mario Brothers 2
(American version), this game is fun, innovative, and overall brings a lot to
the table.

Castlevania II - Simon's Quest Box Description

Castlevania was a cakewalk compared to this bloody curse. You thought you had the Prince of Darkness defanged - eh, Simon Belmont? Well think again, 'cause according to a damsel in distress, evil Count Dracula has left a horrifying curse in his wake. And the only hope you have of ending the terror is to destroy his missing body parts! Talk about your frightening quest, searching a maze of mansions, graveyards and dark, eerie forests - each guarded by man-eating werewolves, fire-throwing zombies and other devilish demons. Your grim chances are kept alive in Transylvania, where cowardly villagers offer clues to the whereabouts of Dracula's remains. And where you'll purchase magic weapons, including silver knives and flame whips. But beware the night. For when the sun disappears, Dracula's curse grows deadlier.  If anybody's interested there's a secret glitch in Dracula's castle. It's on youtube called: Castlevania II Secret Ending (Glitch) by Furious Paul. It's a bit difficult to master but it's possible to do it.

123cheese stop complaining about how it doesn't have skeletons. I agree, this game isn't the best, but it is good. Also wasting time typing a comment wastes time in game. Don't come crying bloody tears if you get the bad ending. (Bloody tears is awesome

This game sucks. What were the producers thinking? The only thing that's good is, well, the music.
