You know the popular threads. The ones with like 1K+ replies, and the semi popular ones that still have pretty recent replies once in a while. The question is, what MAKES them so "popular"? Sometimes it can be the most random thread ever.

The answer is probably different for each form. And each type of thread I'd imagine. Like for ask anythings, geeo's an admin, so lots of people seem to want to ask him questions. And ta da, popular thread .

And Locals, again, close this if it's a replica :v.

I've thought about this for a while, and it's hard to really say. 

It has to be a subject that you don't have to think about too hard, so something for which an answer quickly comes to mind. It also has to be something that many people have an opinion on... not something that only a few will care about. 

It's hard to really know what makes it great, all I know is I'm always impressed when I see someone do it.

I think those threads are really popular because of the topic (duh Mudkip, everyone knows that). Ok to be more specific: everyone likes forum games, asking people questions and talking about something that is currently popular and well known. In forum game threads, ask anythings and more of these kind of threads: it isn't hard at all to think about your answer.

Perhaps it is just because we are so laxy to post these days that we want simple threads to make easy replies.

I think when you come up with an interesting thread that catch peoples attention. Not only that if you reply to their answers, and other people see it more would post in that thread. That what I think but, hey I could be wrong about my answer. Also as light said it could be the simplest ones that gets the most replies and stuff. '-'

Popular threads have a common topic that everybody can talk about. Everybody can talk about what kind of food they like, or their opinion on school. Not everyone can talk about work, certain religions and love trouble. 

Second, they're often started by a popular person, or they get responds from a lot of people. Does a thread look more interesting when Davideo7 himself replies, or does it look more interesting when a newbie with 7 posts respond?

And like Light Knight said, you don't have to think too long about making a short and snappy answer, because people want to do lots of stuff very quickly.

A popular thread is usually the one that people can keep adding to. If it's one of those threads where once someone says something, there isn't much for them to say after that, then it won't last long because soon enough there won't be anybody posting. But if the thread is kind of open ended, where users can keep posting, then people will, like any of the Ask Anythings/Off Topics because once you post, you can post again if you think of something new, so you aren't limited and people will keep going back to it.

Yeah, I agree with everyone else though. It depends on the interest, sometimes you score big on topics sometimes you fail.
There's some threads I reply to, because I just feel like it. I don't reply to some threads because I don't know what to say, or just don't know any revalant information to the topic.

It's all personal preference in the end, and some people just wanna post random stuff and have fun XP. (Crazy House forum says HI to back that up)

This has to do with me posting just as well as it has to do with threads being popular.

So the simplest threads get the most replies because of time constraints and stuff. *looks at Crazy House* yep, that seems to be it. tbh, I sometimes respond to a thread because I'm laxy and want to get to 1K posts quicker .

TornadoMudkip : I like Ask Anythings. I can troll ask people questions and stalk see their amazing answers. Form games not so much since I feel like I'm spamming when I post in too many. And I think we're all affected by the laxy curse ;-;. It's official.

Eniitan : The interesting threads sometimes get enough attention to be sorta popular from what I've saw, but threads like "Last movie you've seen?", for example, has like over 1K posts. And the topic itself isn't that interesting or thought provoking. It's just a thread for 1+ post count in my perspective. As for responding to people that have responded, that creates interaction and makes it more interesting for me.

juuldude : About your second point, that does make sense. If David replies to a topic, everyone's gonna be like "umg such amaze". And they'll try to respond so that davideo7 senpai can notice them because maybe they only noticed the topic BECAUSE David replied.

zanderlex : *looks at my failed threads* so THAT'S why they failed :p. Also, if you can post multiple times in it, then that usually means that you can also actually have a conversation with other people in the thread. And conversation equals more posts :o.

In all seriousness, MEMES XP, and I only seem to post in threads that interest me nowadays. And sometimes I don't want to post because it'll seem like I'm repeating what everyone is saying XD.

ZeroTails : Well you can have a conversation in a thread where you're only expected to post once. Like a "what's your favorite game?" Unless you change your favorite game, you wont be posting there again, but others can still reply to you and start talking.

zanderlex : yea, but threads that usually have more substance and "encouragement" to converse are the ones that usually have more conversations and interaction between users. And therefore have more replies and last longer for the most part.

ZeroTails : Yep, that means you need to start getting creative. :p

ZeroTails : I agree with zander get creative lol. Its the one way to get people to post in them, and guarantee it will be something that it is to do with life or something else which I forgot about.

There's a few factors in my opinion. Creativity of the thread is one of them. Second would be a conversation happening between a few users. And third would be age. Many threads with tons of replies are actually a few years old. So that's a ton of users who were able to post.

Two things that I think make a thread popular is the topic being discussed, and also the way in which the topic is presented. Obviously, more people will be inclined to talk about pokemon or the last game they played than topics like strands of c++ code or civics. I also thing that to a degree, the reputation/popularity of the person that creates the thread also plays a part in its potential popularity, again, people will more than likely sway towards replying to a thread made by a well known member than a newbie that just joined. 

Those are my beliefs on it. I haven't made a lot of successful threads, so I can't really give any further advice on the matter.

I make threads popular. All I need to do is either make a thread or start posting in one and that thread becomes awesome.



In all seriousness quite often a thread is good because of who started it. People recognize a name and want to check out the thread. Other times the topic/title of the thread gets people's attention. And sometimes it is just such a good idea that people want to post in the thread a ton.

I think it's all about interest. If it's something people consider worth their time, they reply often. And if not, well, it Probably be the opposite.

Honestly, I'd have to say that a lot forum games related threads are bound to get a ton of posts on them. Ask Anything threads are mainly super popular if it's a super well known user like David or geeo. As far as other threads go, it's all about the topic I think. Those are my thoughts on the matter.

I often wonder about this too. I tend to make threads the receive no more than probably four or five replies.

I think it comes down to simplicity. Threads I post tend to be specific, whereas the threads with many responses tend to be bare boned. For instance, I create a thread about programming, which only like 5% of the community cares about. Where as if I post a thread about "what did you eat for dinner last night," it'll attract basically anyone who eats - especially during TdV. It's nice and easy.

I guess that's just what it boils down to. For future threads I personally will be attempting to stay on a specific topic, but open strong with something that anyone can really get into the conversation.

Throw Pokemon or wrestling in there and a thread will be successful.

Reality is people like talking about themselves.  If you ask questions that require opinions, or what someone is doing or what they like, and it's broad enough to be interesting to a wide age range, you'll get responses.

Keep things specific and you'll get only a few responses.

Talk sports and you'll get no responses.

Outside sticky posts, popular threads obviously have "popular" subjects. With titles like "What is your favorite X", it is easy for people to have something to say on the subject if it is broad enough.

Most of the sticky posts I have seen also have "easy" subjects like "Ask X anything". If it is to a moderator (or Davideo) obviously people will have a lot to ask them about website mechanics, how to make better posts, advice, etc.

Finally, crazy house (where the most popular threads seem to lie) is "anything goes" so it is even easier for people to post something. I admit doing it for the post boost during Tour de Vizzed, but sometimes you can get a good laugh. I once threw Donald Trump's toupee, and the person receiving it said "Keep that thing away from me!"
