I have been wanting to create my own program, but I have no idea how to do this... I have a VERY basic knowledge of Javascript and a smidgen of HTML... I want to know, where and how can I learn this?

First, What programming language should I learn?
Second, Where can I learn this language?

Third, How is it best to learn and gain experience in this field?

You can give suggestions, ask for some, anything. If it is helpful, and on topic, post here!

I learned the little I know from Khanacademy.org. (Javascript) HTML... I got from html.net... Sadly, all I learned was how to create a basic webpage that said, "Hello World!"

I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but I am wanting to learn HTML among other things to help me create my own website. For beginners I recommend www.w3schools.com . What kind of program are you wanting to create?

I, also, am looking for whatever suggestions I can get, but for me it's what I need to know about website creation and where to learn it.

Also darthyoda, we should totally help track each other's progress, if you're up for it.

CatLady : I would want to create something that would help me keep track of all of the reviews I have made. That and a drawing program, so I could host a givaway or something.

What do you mean by keep track of progress? (Just wondering, it sounds good, but I don't know what you have in mind.)

I suggest something in the easy level then you can build your way up in ranks. Python is easy to learn but it can also be use for a lot more just like in this video

https://d1a2y8pfnfh44t.cloudfront.net/LjCzaz1aEBo/full/540p/index.mp4

has they said you can make games with this language (unlike that fake Khan academy). You can learn it in any class, you tube videos (not recommend) or here

https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Programmers

this website can help clear this question

http://reliscore.com/blog/why-every-programmer-should-learn-python-or-ruby/

if use right it can become a career (its real just look)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epXQMbnmlcY

heres a picture explaining everything I typed about

CatLady : & darthyoda, I learned a lot of Javascript at http://www.codecademy.com/learn.

It's free and you can start with whatever language you want with choices including HTML & CSS, Javascript, JQuery, PHP (Vizzed uses a lot of this), Python, and Ruby. These are the basic languages of the Web and seem to be what you both are after. The user interface and instruction at codcademy were very good.

I would have kept up with my learning but I switched gears towards pursuing a career with my current employer. Programming may come up in the future at my job and if it does I'll jump at the chance to learn this again. As a hobby, coding has been very fun and challenging for me.

If your still looking for a way to learn a programming language, codecademy.com offers free lessons that can teach you. I completed about 25% of their java class before school started, and I took on a class for javascript.
*Just saw thephantombrain's response and so ya. I support code academy.

mastergame : I somewhat disagree with what you posted about java vs python. It sort of sends mixed signals. I think for learning how to program, C# console app in Visual Studio 2013 (is now free) is the way to go.

Best IDE, hands down. Easy language to get a grasp onto. Once you understand how the code works you can then move onto winforms, then if you want you can move onto XNA to make games.

BigBob85 : I don't think he was looking for a program to buy, and free to students only is not a good thing since it has this rule on it

this version of the software cannot be used for the development of enterprise applications.

that's a very big disadvantage.

BigBob85 : I agree with you completely. I went from not knowing that much Visual Basic to being somewhat proficient in C# within a week (remember that I already had a basic knowledge of programming though, not completely a beginner). Java is very similar to C#, so I'd recommend C# as well because it's a common syntax, and once you understand basic syntax, learning other languages is easier than you'd think. I use Visual Studio 2013 (yes, it is really free) and I can also say that it is a very good IDE, especially for a beginner because of all the tutorials/support online for it.

btw Bob, I like your layout

mastergame : Visual studio is free now though. http://www.visualstudio.com/ They also offer unlimited free private source repositories.

To add to this, XNA has a cross platform port called MonoGame. MonoGame uses the Xamarin framework for iOS/Android. Xamarin now offers free student packages (http://blog.xamarin.com/xamarin-for-students/)

Therefor, for free*, as a student, you can develop your own cross platform iOS/Android/WP/PC/Mac/Linux game. The best thing to help people write code (at least, in my opinion) is to see the results of what they write. Seeing the same code on PC run on my mobile phone is pretty motivating.

* I am unsure of the $25 google plus developer registration and $99/year iOS dev license is required if you don't plan on releasing a game.

BigBob85 : no no you still don't understand, enterprise by definition is a business or company. Therefore Google, apple, and websites are enterprise. So you are not allow to share the student version of a game with a enterprise.

The website I've found most helpful as I'm learning various coding languages is http://www.newthinktank.com/. It's helped me a lot, hopefully it'll do the same for you.

mrfe : Thank you! I'll check it out! I'm sure it'll help me to learn!

BigBob85 : I'll check out visual studio to see what they have! Thank you for sharing that.

thephantombrain : I'll check that out as soon as I can!

Thank you all, I think we kind of lost track towards the end there...

Local Mods : I have enough information for now, and I would appreciate a close! Thank you!
