1. Welcome to first day of the Bible Trivia Contest, April Edition. I just felt like starting this contest with a bang. One of the great things about being the game host is that I can do whatever I want to make this interesting and fun, so expect twists for these next couple of days. Speaking of April Fools, today's topic will be related to the topic of fools. When we think about the word "fool," we tend to mean "stupid" or "unintelligent." However, there are certain verses in the Bible that uses the word "fool" in a different way due to the Hebrew word used to describe "fool". Q: "According to the Psalmist (King David in this case), what does a "fool" say in his heart?"

A: "There is no God"

Explanation: From Psalm 14:1 and Psalm 53:1, they state "The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”" The Hebrew word for "fool" here does not mean an unintelligent person, but an impious person. It is a person that is vile and corrupt. These types of "fools" will say in their hearts "there is no God."

2. Zzzzzzzzz.......wh...what? Oh sorry. I fell asleep because I already feel BORED with this quiz format. I need something new!!!!! So here is a new format I like to call speed datin....ahem, I mean....speed matching. You will have 6 descriptions along with 6 answers. You have 1 minute to match 6 correct pairs together. The scoring would be that each correct match is 10 pts, each wrong match is -10 pts, and each second remaining on the clock would be the extra points that you would gain in the total. So if you got 5 right and 1 wrong, with 17 seconds left on the clock, you would get 50-10+17 = 57 pts. Got it? Ok.

I somehow managed to take fifteen seconds, despite knowing the answer before reading the question (the comment posted here with the April fools reference gave it away). Man I'm slow. lol

Edit: I think I'll have to drop out. My phone's too slow, I lose too much time loading pages, and with a screen this size, pinch zoom and scrolling kills my time. I actually ran out of time today. I can't blame my speed yesterday on my phone though, since I was actually on a pc.

Eirinn : Just do what you can. You don't need to tell me if you are dropping out or not. If you feel like answering a question on a certain day, you can do so. Who knows, the other people's scores might fluctuate and you might even still be competitive even though you don't answer every question. This question might have been a little too tight in the timing (which I have been pondering whether I should have done 1 minute or 2 minutes. I stuck with 1 minute in hoping that competitors would consider going for partial credit.) Anyways, it's up to you. I'll be aware of my questions for the future.

I knew the moment I read your description here, that I would majorly fail this one.  LOL  I took 18 seconds, but I only think I got one of those right.  It said I got 60 points though?  O.o  Is that accurate? If so, I did horrendously.  lol  Just... wow. XD  I'm interested to see how the others fared in this one.

I did debate not trying because I figured I'd do badly, but then again... it's interesting to know what I know, you know?

play4fun :  Nope.  I'm fairly positive I took 18 seconds.  I was trying to complete it as soon as possible.  I mean, if I took 42 seconds, those seconds passed by miraculously fast!  Of course, I wasn't trying to watch the time either, because I had a headache and was trying to get them done as fast as possible.

Surgiac solidified her lead with a perfect score with 3 seconds to spare, but out of nowhere, Light Knight decided to start on the second day, and not only get a perfect score, but also answered the question with 34 seconds left on the clock. Thus crept into second place. It is still anybody's game here. There was also someone with the last name of Durham in which I don't recognized, but he didn't finish on time.

Like what Singelli said, her mistake was costly, moving her down two places. mrfe made up from yesterday and moved back up to third. Surgiac is still first, but L.K. is creeping closer to her. This goes to show that anything can happen in this contest and it is still early in the month.

4. Sometimes you can't help but be confused by some of the facts from the Bible because some people would depend on hearsay instead of actually reading their Bibles. If you are not constantly in the Word, sometimes these hearsay would turn to popular belief or "common knowledge". That is why there are many misconceptions (most holiday related) to what is actually expressed in the Bible. Today we are going to test that knowledge.



I call this segment "True or ABSOLUTELY-POSITIVELY-false?" I called it that because I know that there are some people who would sound very angry and offended when expressing their disagreement on something that is not true. (Plus, the name has a nice ring to it, don't you think? ) So here is what's going to happen: you will have 120 seconds to answer 6 True/False questions. Each of them will have a statement that claims to be found in the Bible. If ANY PART of that statement is either NOT TRUE or NOT MENTIONED in the Bible, click "ABSOLUTELY-POSITIVELY-false." Note that the questions are in SEPARATE PAGES and once you clicked "next" for each statement, you CANNOT go back to it. So think fast and clear. That must be the fastest i've ever answered. 

So in doing that one, I am a bit worried that I missed some because I psyched myself out in thinking the questions were worded in such a way to be tricky. Perhaps they were. Still, this is pretty fun and promising!

5. The study of theology is rooted from the study of scripture. Theologians study the Bible to formulate a framework in an attempt to visualize our understanding of God, Man, sin, salvation, etc. Sometimes theologians would use terms to describe a concept in the Bible, even if that term is never mentioned in the Bible. For example, there is a Latin term called "Ordo salutis" which means "order of salvation." It is the concept of sequencing different steps in the salvation of Man. Different denominations have different beliefs on what the actual steps or the order. Light Knight has officially overtaken the lead from Surgiac, but it's still early and there is a 5 point difference between 1st and 2nd. mrfe continues his streak of being the fastest answerer of the day, which one must wonder how long will that strategy keep him in the Top 3. Singelli and Eva-Janova had a pretty good day and moved up in the ranks. We also welcome pray75 and Kathrine May Thomson into this competition. The leaders might need to watch out for Kathrine, for in one day, she already got 90 points and starts off in 5th place of the ranks.

Explanation: The Bible made no indication that there were only 3 wise men. There were three gifts to Jesus and tradition states that there are three wise men, but the Bible did not say so.

2. Animals of each kind came two by two into Noah's Ark.
Answer: ABSOLUTELY-POSITIVELY-false
Explanation: God did not ask Noah to have only 1 male and 1 female for each animal. Each clean animal have 7 pairs while unclean animals have 1 pair (Genesis 7:2)

3. Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Answer: ABSOLUTELY-POSITIVELY-false
Explanation: It is stated that Jonah was swallowed by a huge fish, not specifically a whale. The original Hebrew word is defined as a big fish or a sea monster. Some people might say that it is a whale because of Matthew 12:40, where the KJV translated that a whale swallowed Jonah. However, the Greek word itself dominantly means "big fish" and there is no contextual indication that it is a whale, which is why the other versions translated it to be "large fish" (NASB translate it as sea monster)

4. Adam and Eve ate the apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Answer: ABSOLUTELY-POSITIVELY-false
Explanation: Genesis states that they ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It does not say apple.

Oh wow!  I was not familiar with the concept asked about, using those particular terms. Thus, I did my best, with much hesitation.  I went and read the verses after wards.... and I'm so happy!  I swapped two terms!  That does mean I got 3/5, but man... Interestingly, only 5 people participated this time, pushed some competitors down the ranks. Maybe it is a strategy of avoiding questions that they think are hard. HERE'S THE EXPLANATION FROM THE PREVIOUS QUESTION
Here is Romans 8:29-30 with the order of words emphasized.
"For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified."

So the order is Foreknowledge, Predestination, calling, justification, glorification.

6. You know those stories that your Sunday School teachers tell you as a kid about your favorite Bible heroes? They were depicted as role models and stuff like that. Realistically, they are just like us. Just like us, they need the Grace that God gives, the forgiveness that God provides. They have sinned against others and sinned against God as well and they are not perfect. This should tell us that 1. The Bible is not shy of recording what a character did wrong and 2. God can use those who are not perfectly qualiified. Today, we will see how much you know about these characters. I don't remember the order that I put, but if memory serves me correct, I was actually pretty close!

In respect to today's question, I really like the formatting. I think I got them all right, and I did it fairly quickly, but you still never know. I'm pretty good with Biblical concepts, but I tend to mix up specifics from time to time. We'll see how it goes!

Surgiac had a perfect day and is running away with the lead, while there is a tight race for 4th as Eva-Janova, pray75, and Hoochman took advantage of mrfe's unavailability and made huge strides up the ranks. In fact, Surgiac, pray75, and Hoochman must have liked the question because they scored over 100 pts.

I need to remind everyone that the points that you get from answering the question quickly should be considered as "BONUS POINTS." My scoring system values the idea of getting the question correct or not answering it if you don't know. Getting a question wrong gives you negative points. That is more destructive than answering the question slowly. Because of wanting to answer the question fast, some of you are missing questions because of miss clicks or not thinking straight. You get more points overall if you focus on getting the question correctly. 7. I studied physics in college and for those who know about physical sciences majors, we HATE any units that are not the SI units (m, kg, s). It's even more so for me because back when I was a primary student in Hong Kong, I would only learn SI units and not the disgraceful Imperial units, like inches, feet, pounds, etc. Well, in the ancient world, people have their own units that they use for measurements. The unit of length that Israelites used is known as the "cubit". Some mentions of the cubit in the Bible included the measurements of Noah's ark, the temple in Jerusalem, and Goliath's height. Hopefully you have paid attention to your footnotes of your Bibles, because that is where it is written about how long is a cubit compared to modern units. Today, I will test you that.....with somewhat of a tongue twister. Because of how tricky and complicated I made this question to be, I posted the question out in the open before you click the start button. PLEASE take the time to read it and take some time to fully understand what I am asking before you click "start." I am saying this for your sake. Ok, here's the question:

Let's say there is a guy called "Q," who is trying to affirm the length of a football field called "Cuban Field". For some odd reason, he wants to measure in cubits and he knows that from endzone to endzone, the length of the football field is 100 yards = 300 feet = 3600 inches. Now he has these cubes called "cubit cubes" which are 1 cubit long on every side of the cube. If Q were to use the cubit cubes to measure Cuban Field in cubits, about how many cubes of "cubit cubes" does Q need to reach from endzone to endzone of Cuban Field?

Yeah, yeah, I know you're talking to me with that little warning.    I'm glad to know that I only forgot to swap two of them though.  I'll try to stop looking at that silly timer.  hehe.  Although I gotta admit, I'd HATE to skip a problem.  I've ingrained that idea into my students:  Always, ALWAYS try.  It'd be terrible to miss out on possible points.

With just ONE question though, can't it still benefit to get the question wrong?  I mean, if you answer wrongly in 3 seconds..... aren't you only getting 10 points taken off of that leftover time bonus?  Or were only certain questions negative ten points?  I guess I need to go back and read again. hehe

Although, I must say this:  Can I be technical? Technically, he'd only need one.  In fact, it'd be a lot more convenient.  He could set it down and just roll the cube from face to face...... from endzone to endzone, and count the number of cubit faces that touched the ground.  Just sayin'.

Day 7 is now closed. CAN YOU BELIEVE WE WENT THROUGH A WEEK OF BIBLE TRIVIA? Any feel like they learn something during this week of brain teasing (torturous) content of questions? Let's give a minute to let it sink in on what we've learned....(waited a minute)...ok, enough thinking. Let's get to the answer of yesterday's question.

Question: "Let's say..." you know what, I don't feel like repeating that question. I'm tired from work, I am missing my fix of "Doctor Who", so I'm just gonna lay it out on all y'all. The answer is 200 cubes. Why? Because each cube has a length of 1 cubit. 1 cubit is about 18 inches, so if you line up 200 cubes in a line starting from one endzone, you should get 18x200 inches, or 3600 inches, or 300 feet, or 100 yards, which is the length from endzone to endzone. I'm actually surprised that a lot of you got this right. I guess the order of magnitude help a lot of you guys out if you didn't know how long a cubit is in inches. You can know this info by looking at your footnotes of your Bibles wherever a cubit is mentioned.

I was going to pencil down Light Knight as first place...minutes before I close the question, but Surgiac came in at the last couple of minutes to answer the question with confidence and extended her lead by 3. It seems that everyone except for Singelli answer the question super fast, which is kinda expected since I left the question out there for people to think it through. However, it did cost some people, as mrfe fell from his battle for 4th place by answering the question wrongly in 3 seconds. Meanwhile, Eva-Janova and pray75 continue to push upward and are threatening Singelli's position for 3rd. You better watch out Singelli, for you can never be too careful with a theology student climbing closer to you.

8. Now, I sometimes find it interesting that nowadays, preachers would include phrases in their preaching when they ask the congregation to go open their Bibles. For example, if we are to read in the book of Joshua, the phrases would be like "it is the book before Judges and after Deuteronomy," or "If you are using the church Bible, it is on page 94" or "you can look at the beginning of the Bible to see a table of contents." It is pretty important to know how to navigate through the Bible if you are a reader of the Bible. When I was in younger, a way that I would remember the order in the Bible is through song, and we actually practice this song every Sunday when we have singing practice at church. Obviously, there are many other ways to learn how to memorize the books of the Bible, but the key is to actually do, so that you don't have to rely on the table of contents or for others to help flip own the Bible for you. It might even be a good indication that you haven't been reading your Bible enough if you don't know how to navigate through it. Today, we will test that knowledge...but this one is special. Well, you definitely made the problem much harder than it had to be.  I knew that a cubit was about a foot and a half, but my problem was that I multiplied the two numbers, even though I knew the correct operation was division.  I was telling myself that 300/1.5 was 450, but in fact it was 200.  When I opened the answers, I knew that I had obviously made a mistake, and it threw me off.  I kind of had a brain fart and then realized I had multiplied instead of divided.  XD  Half that time was my brain fart moment from being thrown off guard.  LOL

I don't have my bible books memorized, but I think I know the order pretty well.   I tried one and I think I got it right.  Could I try the other one just for fun, or would it mess your quiz up?

I also forgot to say that I was this close in subtracting 60 points from Singelli's overall score for being all technical on me, but after much prayer, I decided to forgive her on that, and to continue to love her in Christian love, despite her putdowns.
