Baseball is one of America's most favorite sports and is very popular. The game is so popular that several baseball video games have been made. Pretty much every game system has had a baseball game. The Play Station One (PS1) really made sports games popular. PS1, had several series that made baseball games: the MLB series, EA sports Series, and the High Heat Series. A lot of baseball games were made. The two well known ones were MLB and EA sports series. I will be reviewing EA's Triple Play Baseball. So, lets get to it.

Story: 6

The year is 2001 and its a new baseball season. You as the player get to chose your favorite team among the league's 30 teams. The goal is to build your team up and guide them to a World Series. You can trade players, or even create them. However, to get to the World Series you will have too beat other teams and make it through the post season. Can you guide your team to Victory or will it be a frustrating season its you call.

Okay, this is a sports game so nobody should be surprised the plot is not going to blow anybody away. This is not a Mega Man type plot were you have to save the world from Dr. Wily or Sigma. There is no kingdoms to liberate from Bowser as in Mario games, or defeat King. K Rool in the Donkey Kong Country games. This is your basic sports plot build a winner with your favorite team. However, the plot does show some creativity and that is what keeps the rating from being low. The game puts you as the player in charge. You will either guild your team to a series or have bad luck. That was a nice touch. The game's plot is a lot like the other well known MLB series line. The plot does not deserve anything higher then a middle of the road rating cause well the plot is nothing special. It does not deserve anything lower cause of its creativity. Thus, I give the plot a 6 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 9

The graphics are amazing and are just like the MLB series especially MLB 99 and up. The stadiums look like they do in real life. The colors are great, and the people in the stands look like real people. I also like the sprites of the ballplayers. Sometimes the game will have a ballplayer argue with the umpire if they strike our or get called out. The way their mouths move reminds me of a real major league argument between players and umpires. The only thing is some of the stadiums that have water around them such as the Giant's stadium, the water looks a little fuzzy. But overall the graphics are amazing

The Controls are mostly good but I did notice a few minor issues. Sometimes it seems the controls are sluggish when a ballplayer is running. It makes me wonder if EA was trying to reflect the real life speed of the ballplayers. Slow moving players in real life seem to be sluggish. I did notice that the pitchers at times seem sluggish again I wonder if that was done on purpose. The controls are good when batting. Despite these problems the controls were mostly good not as smooth as some of the MLB series games but good. I give the graphics and controls a solid 9 out of 10.

Sound: 8

The sound in this game was mostly good. Unlike the MLB series EA gave Triple Play a sound track, which was a nice touch. The sound track mostly comprises of oldies song and old rock songs. So you will either like the soundtrack or not. The music plays at random too. It depends on what type of music format you prefer. The voices in this game sound about right and are nicely done. They might not be golden like MLB 99 and up. But lets be honest Vin Scully does the announcing in the MLB 99 series and up and its hard to beat Vin Scully. Still the voices are good. The boos and cheers of the crowd sound good too and were nicely done. The only thing is they could have given more sound when the ball is being hit. In MLB the balls had a loud popping sound when they were hit a long way to let you know you hit a double, triple or home run. The only sound I heard was a whoosh sound when home runs are hit. I prefer the pop sounds cause that is how it sounds in real life. I give the sound a 8 out of 10. I really like the oldies songs in this game, but I like oldies.

Replay Value: 8

Before I get into the replay value it should be noted that when these games came out. It seemed you either liked the EA series or the MLB Series; some people liked both series. I really liked the MLB series. However, I bought this game when it came out. I had fun playing this game it is a nice game and I can see why people like EA sports games. I played this game often and once in awhile I like to go back and play this game. Just to be different from the other baseball games. So the replay value will really depend on your preference. I mostly play MLB series games. But when I got this one I was like wow this is a good game. The graphics and being able to create players is what adds to the replay value to this game. So at the end of the day I give it a solid 8 out of 10

Depth: 7

The Depth in this game is not like the MLB series. There is not a franchise mode or spring training mode in this game like they are in most MLB series games. But, Triple Play does offer a lot. You as the player can chose among 30 teams. If you are like me and have more than 2 teams that adds to the fun. You can also create players. You can create today's players and put them on your chosen team. Its really a nice game to play. Plus its a long season you can play all 162 games in a schedule and the post season. So it will take you awhile to complete this game. Creating players, choosing teams, and this being a long game drives up the depth in this game. The only thing that brings down the depth is they could have been like their rivals and added a franchise mode, draft mode or spring training mode. Another thing this brings the depth rating down is the fact that this is a sports game. There are no items to collect or power ups to get. Still, I give the depth a good rating of 7 out of 10.

Difficulty: 7

The difficulty in this game was hard to rate. If your team happens to have been a good team in the year 2000 as all stats are based off of the 2000 season. Then your team will reflect that. Home runs will be easier to hit, your team won't make as many errors, and it will be easier to strike people out. If your favorite or the team you chose had a horrible 2000 season the game reflects that. Teams that lost more than 90 games in the 2000 season will make it more difficult to win. Errors will occur more, ground outs will occur more and pitching will be hard sometimes. In addition, it should be noted the game will reflect on individual players as well. If a ballplayer strikes out a lot that will reflected in this game, if a ball player hits a lot of home runs, that is also reflected in this game, and if a pitcher had a good year the game reflects that as well.

The difficulty comes by not just trying to get to the playoffs and a world series, but the randomness of this game. Errors are random if your team is good you probably won't have to worry about a lot of random errors. If your team had a bad year well good luck to you. Also the controls can add difficulty. If a ball player is slow in real life, its like the game reflects that. You will find that slow players will run the bases slower and run slower trying to catch balls that are hit. I think that was done on purpose but it could be the controls just being sluggish too. That can add to the difficulty. At the end of the day I give the difficulty a 7 out of 10. The controls can be a little frustrating at times. But I like games that really reflect the players and teams.

Triple Play came out in the Spring of 2001 at the same time as MLB 2002. The PS1 was at its peak and still a very popular system. I saved my money and bought both of these games around the same time. I played them both a lot. I could not wait till I got home to play these games. I played 2002 more than this because well that game was just special to me in its own ways. But this game is a great game and is still fun to play. As I stated it seemed like you either liked the MLB line or EA line. I happen to like both with MLB having a slight edge. But, I'm glad I bought this game I do not regret it one bit.

The graphics were amazing in this game and really shows what the PS1 could really do. I really like how the ballplayers argue when being called out, sometimes, that was a nice touch. The music in this game was great as well. I also think the difficulty was about right for this type of game. I will argue that MLB Series and EA are some of the best baseball games out there for PS1. Both series are solid gold to me. I really like Triple Play's create players. You can create a player with different batting and pitching styles. I like to play this game and create today's players. I also like as I stated how the game really reflects the teams and their players. I have played baseball games that did not reflect on those things. I have found games that do not reflect on how the players are in real life boring.

Now, Triple Play did have a few minor issues. I really would have liked to have had a pop sound when hitting a home run instead of a whoosh. The Pop sound to me is like how a home run or even a double as well as a triple sound in real life. On TV and at stadiums I have been too when you hear that pop sound you usually know the player has hit the ball hard and long. They also could have added a draft or franchise mode. I really like those in the MLB series so I was hoping EA would have something similar. Also while I stated the graphics were good. They could have made the water around some of the stadiums more clear. The controls had a few minor issues as at times they seemed sluggish. I want to think that was done intentionally to reflect how the players are in real life. But part of me thinks it could just be the controls too. As it seems sometimes you really have to press the buttons to make a player run faster.

Overall, Triple play is a good solid baseball game. The issues this game has are minor and to most players they will not be a bother. I was glad when I got this game and as I stated several times I still like to play it. Its a good blast from the past you might say. Would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. If you enjoyed this game when it came out then take a trip down memory lane and play this game ( I still am) or if you missed out then play this game and hopefully you will enjoy it like I did. So, I hope you enjoy this game as much as I did. Also if you like EA games then I will also give a shout out and recommend playing the MLB series 99 and up. If you like the MLB series more then play Triple play and other EA games like I did it. Thus, I give the overall rating of Triple Play a solid 8.4
