REVIEW #1: Super Mario Bros. 64 1.3 [Super Mario 64 Multiplayer 1.3] loganvllach
Alright, so for my first review on Vizzed I figured I'd do something special and review Super Mario 64 Multiplayer. Or as I like to call it, Super Mario Bros. 64.
This game's
update has really improved it altogether, and there are a lot of things to talk about, so why not start with the game's difficulty.
DIFFICULTY [ 7 / 10 ]
---------------------------------------------
Super Mario 64 isn't exactly a difficult game, however Super Mario Bros. 64 has some wonky camera controls, though the zooming out polishing added in this
update really helps out with the all around gameplay, I did find myself having to use the 'Player Specific Camera Pan' feature quite often, which is a good addition, but became rather annoying when I was forced to hold down the camera pan button while playing, definitely recommend a Gamepad for this one, that way you can hold down the button you assign it to without much of a hassle. The camera controls make the difficulty a bit higher. Controls are irritating, and for that reason, I give difficulty a 7/10. Since we are talking about the hack, and not the base game, I won't be talking about the level difficulty.
DEPTH [ 8 / 10 ]
-------------------------------
This game has A LOT to offer, from the secret levels, to the 100 Coin missions, there is always something to do in this game, I always found myself going back to old stages when new ones were too difficult, and getting more completed in those stages. With depth, Nintendo really knew what they were doing, you can collect the Castle's Secret Stars, which are required for 100% completion, and while some of these stages are more fun with 2 Players, others can be outright impossible. For this, I give depth an 8/10.
STORY [ 3 / 10 ]
--------------------------
This game is NOT an 'Ocarina of Time' and as such, it is a lot more fleshed out for younger audiences, the basic story is pretty close to every other game in the franchise [Besides a Few]: Princess 'Peach' Toadstool gets taken by Bowser, and Mario needs to save her by collecting the power stars from the Paintings scattered about the castle, except this time he has his faithful brother Luigi to help him along the journey. Together the Mario Brothers will have to go on a footrace against a sprinting Koopa, fight against a giant Thwomp King, face off with Bowser many times, and finally save the Princess and her subjects. It's a pretty simple story, so I give it a 3/10.
ADDICTIVENESS [ 8 / 10 ]
----------------------------------------
Although a wee bit buggy at times, this game is definitely an addictive and fun game to play, especially with friends and family. I found myself quite a fair bit entertained at times, whether it was fighting my folks with Team Attack, which is toggled in the start screen inside the castle/front yard. I found it fun to challenge my mates to see who could reach a star first, and you would be surprised how much 'Scumbaggery' occurs when this happens, it is extremely addicting and fun for the whole family, for this, I give addictiveness an 8/10.
SOUND [ 5 / 10 ]
--------------------------
What can I say? Even if most levels reused the same song and changed it up a bit, this game had some amazing tracks, just listen to that water level track! Pure art! However, in this hack, some things can still be critiqued and broken apart, one in particular that really personally grinds my gears the wrong way. For starters, Luigi doesn't have his own audio tracks yet, and I have seen a hack that
replaces Mario with Luigi, and even goes as far as to give him his own audio tracks, I understand the complications in adding completely new sound effects, rather than
replace old ones. But on the other hand, other hacks have done it, and seeing how far this hack has actually come, it doesn't really seem too far fetched to expect such a thing as this in the next
update or so. This bothers me just a little bit, and for that reason, I have to give this hack a 5/10.
GRAPHICS [ 6 / 10 ]
------------------------------
This game has some cute, happy and family friendly graphics, although some things look fairly ugly, there are others that just look magnificent for their time, and I really gotta owe it to Nintendo on that one. At the same time, I have to admit that some of the graphics took away from the level, such as the skybox in the final stage, when you get to it, you'll see what I mean. Along with this, some of the polygonal borders make it pretty easy to see outside the map, and hit the invisible walls whilst flying, or just simply climbing correctly. And this hack lends itself to that sin, with the Camera always clipping outside of the map awkwardly, it really takes away from the immersion, and makes the map feel very limited, all in all, I'm fairly pleased with the graphics, but I'm going to stay neutral on it. For this reason, I'm putting my score for graphics pretty close to the middle, and giving the graphics an all in all 6/10.
OVERALL [ 9.2 / 10 ]
---------------------------------
I strongly recommend this game to anyone looking to have some good co-op fun in a good family friendly game. I've gotta hand it to the developer for doing such a great job of producing something that feels Nintendo made, like something Nintendo would produce. The coin counter replacing the Health and breathing bar really makes some underwater levels difficult, but at the same time, eliminates the difficulty in two players being a hazard, since now both players have separate health counters, and can always be revived under circumstances. Overall, it was a fun experience, and I'm definitely looking forward to playing it again. All in all, I give this game a score of 9.2/10. Definitely give this one a go, just make sure to have an open mind, and look at the good side of things, it makes the game a lot more enjoyable.
