I love feeding coffee to Pokemon   zanderlex
I really don’t get the hate that Pokemon and Nintendo get for creating a bunch of Pokemon games in such a short amount of time. I hear so many people talk about how all these new games are taking away from the development of the main games, but in reality, it’s not since all these random games are being developed by a bunch of different studios, not Game Freak, so the only game that’s really been affecting the main Pokemon games is Little Town Hero. Plus, the games themselves are mostly free.
One of these games is Pokemon Café Mix. The day it was first revealed I pre-downloaded it and when it came out, I instantly put a few hours into it. Though this was because I was doing a review of the game, not because it was amazing. But the more that I played it, the more I realized that it really was amazing.
For starters, the game looks and sounds amazing. The visuals are really on point and they’re super charming. When you first start up the game, there’s a beautiful cutscene with some nice animations. Al the artwork is really good. Whether it’s the character designs or the backgrounds, they all have a unique and beautiful feel.
The music isn’t bad too. When I first made it to the main menu, I ended up listening to the song that played because it was good. There’s always music playing too, whether you’re in the café or playing one of the games.
You might be wondering, what’s something that I really enjoy about Pokemon Café Mix? For me, it’s the actual gameplay. It’s basically a match 3 but with a huge twist. Match 3’s are called Match 3’s because you match 3. Sometimes 4 or 5 too and it helps you clear the board and score points. In Pokemon Café Mix, you can literally match as many as you are able. You’re matching icons of different Pokemon. You click on one Pokemon, a Squirtle for instance, and you drag it across the board moving other Pokemon out of the way as you collect more and more Squirtles. Soon enough you have a chain of like 25 Squirtles and then once you release the screen, they all disappear and you receive a ton of points.
Not all levels are about points though. Sometimes you will have to collect a certain number of each Pokemon or destroy obstacles such as sugar cubes. But why exactly as you matching Pokemon? Well, these mini-games equate to the creation of tea. Plus other drinks too. You own a café that caters to Pokemon and every time one enters your café and requests a drink, a level starts. If you beat the level, the drink is successfully made and your customer is happy.
I personally enjoy this more than normal match 3’s because it can be a lot more fun being able to explode the entire board at once and reach a 50 chain of one combo. This kind of gameplay can also allow for some cool strategies. As you progress throughout the game, the levels get more challenging, there are more drink options to offer, and you get to expand your café and make it even better. As a result, there’s a ton to do that will keep you busy for many hours, and it’s the perfect kind of pick up and play game where you can play for just a couple levels at a time and you’ll still have fun.
The game isn’t that hard either. If you fail a level once or twice, it doesn’t mean that it’s the end of the world, you just have to start over and try a different strategy or make sure to put extra focus on bonuses.
The only problem that I had with Pokeon Café Mix was that it’s nothing more than a port of a mobile game. All the mechanics are designed to be played on your phone. Even the joycons are useless because it’s touchscreen-only, which can create a few challenges when playing and it leaves docked mode out of the question.
Other than that, the game itself is a lot of fun, and nothing beats a free game. If you had to pay for the game, then yeah it’s possible that the mobile feel could hurt some experiences, but you can get through those for the most part if you aren’t paying for the game. It's definitely worth picking up and y overall grade for Pokemon Cafe Mix is going to be a solid 8/10
