Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Review by: EX Palen - 9.5/10

Back in time
By the time the first Need for Speed games started airing, the option of tuning the car wasn't available. However, as years passed and EA wanted to search for new heights, decided to introduce the option of tuning your car. It was well received by the players, and Need for Speed became a reference in tuning, where you could show your cars not only as racing machines, but also as beautifully-painted cars or heavily slammed cars. For once, you could change the car's appearance to fit your own desires, in the way the game allowed you to. But then, this option was again turned off.

When Need for Speed Shift was released, the series took another path in their main goal. Now you were a racer, and any tuning you could do was regarded to competition, rather than just physical appearance. It included the racing modification, were the car was completely prepared for competition and its performance was altered terribly. This was the first step where we could imagine that Need for Speed was again in search of new heights, maybe wanting to dethrone the mighty Gran Turismo as the best sold racing game series.

So here we are, in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. In fact, this game is the final road, as of today, of the Hot Pursuit series, which started back in 1998. Two games before this one were released, which leads me to think that what Need for Speed is trying right now is to awaken the nostalgia from older times. The main goal was the same for all games: either escape the police or be the police. But there's more than just that. I have to admit that I prefer more the runner side rather than the police side, because if I'm playing a videogame, where nothing is real, I prefer to do what in real life shouldn't and can't be done, and being a policeman can be done in real life, as do police pursuits.

Graphics: Very good graphics indeed. The backgrounds are very defined, and the cars almost look like real cars. The animations before entering a mission, most on the runner side than on the police side, are very well done, primarily the scenes in which the animation is played with the front camera before showing the complete car from behind to highlight that the mission is starting. The police ones aren't that elaborated, specially those in which your car is just driving by, and sometimes causing a traffic jam behind it, like if it couldn't drive and listen to the radio at the same time. Doesn't matter which side I favor, graphics earns a 10 by its own merits.

Sound: The music is very changing. We have many rock (insert specific sub-genre here, my knowledge in music is far below zero) songs, and some are performed by well known artists around the globe. It also includes some actual dance songs, a style I personally hate for being too slow. I don't always play with the music on, but when I do, speeding through a highway at night, raining heavily, and listening to rock music is pure adrenaline for my body. For the game sounds, well, the engine being started when you select the car is a little bit too exaggerated, like if the car was right behind you in a closed parking, which makes me feel uncomfortable playing this game late at night. The engine sounds are incredible, sometimes much better than the background music itself, mainly for the fastest and most powerful cars. I also like the fact that you can choose between three police siren sounds, or even none at all. Also, the tires screech a bit too much for me, beyond reality, maybe the only thing in the sound section that exceeds reality. No wonder why I'm rating sound a 10.

Addictiveness: I really think this is a very addictive game, even though there isn't a non-online multiplayer. It's very difficult to set the best time, or better said, getting the gold medal, in all challenges at the first try, mainly because you'll hardly unlock the best car of its category when trying them, or in the case where you're given the car, maybe it's not the best car for your driving skills, although that can also apply to the track itself. The huge car roster, the length of the game and the two sides to complete make this game very addictive, you always want one more try or one more mission because I can unlock this. And well, how about competing with your friends to set the best time? First time I've ever done this, but here's the third 10 in a row, this time to addictiveness.

Story: Well, nothing. It's not like other Need for Speed games, where there were characters to defeat and positions to arise inside a society. Here you have no identity, and race alone for your own purposes, either being the public enemy number one or the policeman of the year. I don't call this a story mode, even less when the two only modes are the two sides of the same coin as its the case in this game.

Depth: There are a total of 20 ranks to achieve in each side, which means doing a lot of missions. There are also five categories of cars in each side, although the names are obviously changed, the members aren't that much. Collecting all cars requires to speed through the ranks, but remember there are some shortcuts in the disguise of downloadable content, which can give you not only extra cars, but also new missions for both sides. Either way, there are more than enough missions of every kind, either being hot pursuit, weapons included, time attacks, races or head-to-head, and also tests of new categories far before they can be unlocked. Depth has earned a 9.

Difficulty: The controls aren't hard to learn, but can be hard to master the use and controls of the various weapons available on either side. For the runners, the police is constantly using weapons and keeps appearing more frequently in races or alone events as you get a higher rank, and the weapons can be really annoying, specially when they use them without the authorisation being heard, catching you by surprise. Evading the blocks is easy, the helicopter too and also the spike strips, but the EMP can be really annoying. In some missions you're given the jamming, to block all communications and weapons, but it has limited uses and is the least included weapon for runners. But well, remember that you're still impersonating the bad guy, so you have to learn the lesson of not trying this in real life. In my opinion, difficulty earns not more than an 8.

Overall: Great game, but with great flaws too. Sometimes, the automatic gearbox can be annoying, with some cars only getting like 8 mph before reaching top speed, or not using the last gear until the top speed has been surpassed. To avoid any confusion, the top speed mentioned is the top speed the game says the car has, although it isn't the highest value it can reach, but more like an average top speed. The drifts are ridiculous, only needing a little braking without pressing the throttle for long but open corners. Try doing that in Gran Turismo or Driver. Well, try it using the same car, because pure american cars like the 70s muscle cars can drift just by taking a sharp corner without letting go the throttle, and even at speeds as low as 40 mph! Lastly, the most ridiculous thing is that the game itself says that police is more powerful but racers are faster, and you can see a car in the 4th category beating the top speed of the fastest car in the 5th category, like if this was F-Zero, were the NPC go faster only if you do so. But anyway, those stages, once completed, can be ignored, so just keep playing the ones where you don't have to face the police, like the 45 mile long tour with 5th category cars, the climax of the game.
