Metal Slug - Super Vehicle-001 Review by: Eddy88 - 9/10
Metal Slug (Arcade) Review.Jumping TanksAhh... "Run and Gun" games. In my opinion, One of the most beloved genres of the Video Games. Some times known as "War" games. It was common to see many games of this kind in the 90's. The basic objective of this genre was, as it's name says, run through level while avoiding enemies, bullets, and collecting different power-ups. And, to finish, a Giant and menacing enemy that takes many bullets to be defeated. Simple, right? Yeah, that's how "Run n Gun" games used to be. One of the most famous sagas of this genre is, with no doubt, The Contra Saga. However, There's another saga, maybe a bit underrated, that could compite with Contra. I'm talking about the Metal Slug saga. Which started in 1996 with it's first game, named "Metal Slug: Super Vehicle-001" which was released for the Arcades, and then ported to the Sega Saturn and the PlayStation. So, If you are interested in learning more about this game... Keep reading this review about it.
Story: The evil General Morden along with his army, The Rebels, launches a coup d'état on the all the Governments of the world. The Regular Army, which has the job of keep the pace of the world, attempts to stop him. Producing a global war between both forces. After several years of this war. The Regulars create the weapon that will help them to win the war and stop the rebels: The Super Vehicle 001 - A.K.A: "Metal Slug". They decide to keep safe the tanks from the Enemy, with the objective of launch a surprise attack and finish with the war. But, Unfortunately, the rebels discover the secret and steal the tanks, and like if that wasn't enough... They Kidnap the soldiers who had the job of protect the vehicles... In a last effort to stop Morden, the Regular Army send Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving, two of their best soldiers, to locate and eliminate Morden's power base, rescue the kidnapped soldiers, and reclaim or destroy any Metal Slugs they can find so as to keep the technology out of Morden's hands. (8/10)
Graphics: If there's something that everybody praise about this game... It's the graphics. And I agree with them. This game counts with great graphics. A simple look to them is enough. These are pretty colorful. Backgrounds are amazing as well, and Animations are pretty fluid. They act like if they were real humans! (9/10)
Sound: Full of Quality... With amazing tracks and SFX. Every stage has it's own Musical style... There aren't two stages with the same music. SFX is great too. The scream of the soldiers, and the sound of the weapons are great to listen. These maybe could bother if you're playing this for the first time... But, You'll get used to them eventually. (9/10)
Addictiveness: Well, what to say? This game is pretty addictive. You'll come back to play it again for sure, No matter how you much you have played it before. (9/10)
Depth: What about the depth? Let's see what this game offers... Your character can move to the left and right, he can also jump (B) and duck, and move while it's ducking. You can shoot (A) aim the direction of the bullets too, shooting up and shooting down while jumping. We have different kind of weapons to get rid of our enemies, like the Heavy Machine Gun (H), the Rocket Launcher (R), the Flame Shot (F) and the Shot Gun (S). Every one with a different power level. These can be obtained in different ways, one of them being the POW's (Prisoners Of War) which when being released, can give us those weapons or some items to rise our score. However, those aren't the only weapons of the game... We also count with Grenades, (which can be thrown by pressing C) And the Metal Slugs, which can jump and shoot too... There are many other secrets and extras on the game. It's up to you find them. (8/10)
Difficulty: Hard... This title can be pretty hard to beat, even on the Normal difficulty. Only with practice you'll be able to master this game. (8/10)
Final Rating: 9If you're looking for a good "Run and Gun" game. This one is a good option, simple and easy to play and with a decent amount of challenge. Just play it and you'll see.
