A surprising enjoyable game   becerra95
This game is another one of the gameboy cartridges that came with the gameboy back in the late 2000s. This one was a weird one for me as I didn’t even touch it until cartridges started disappearing from the bag. Though playing it as a kid had some fun, how does it do to these days with a different perspective? This is Battle Unit Zeoth for the Gameboy (emulation)
Story : 8
42 years have passed since the Earth was invaded by aliens. It’s at peace until the Grein, a metallic species, resurface from an underground base and ready to attack the earth again.
Basically, using a robot suit, you go out and shoot aliens and save the earth from an alien attack. It’s a neat idea for the gameboy and a nice distraction from the whole Mario land and Tetris games.
It’s an 8 out of 10. Story is unoriginal but it is fairly simple on a gameboy.
Graphics : 8
The graphics look pretty good for the game. I think it was released in 1990 or 1991, and how it has improve from graphics of Mario land or Alleyway (examples) you start to see the potential of the handheld with the power it can bring to hands. Bosses are rather large and as detailed as they can get in the game. Stages, albeit a little sparse in the background due to limitations, the activity is always active when shooting enemies or obstacles. Not much to say in this.
It’s an 8 out of 10. With the limitations of the handheld they did a pretty good job in 1990.
Sound : 9
The sound of the game is surprisingly good. Yes the gameboy beeps and audio is subpar but they made good use of the sound. The shooting does have a screeching noise, enemies make a weird exploding sound when destroyed. The music changes every stage and that’s pretty cool, and I know they loop but it takes like a minute or so, haven’t really paid attention since it wasn’t as noticeable. The boss music will always be the same though.
The sound is a 9 out of 10. The music is superb for the handheld and one of the best parts of the game.
Addictive : 5
This game is fairly easy to beat and doesn’t offer much replay value. Once you beat it it kinda loses its appeal. Game is just more so a leisure when on the go and enjoy for a few minutes to kill some time.
It’s a 5 out of 10. Rather quick fix but that’s it.
Depth : 6
This game has a bit to offer. When playing the game you have the basic shoot and jump, but please do not double press the shoot button. My dumb self thought it was rapid fire but it was a hyper bomb after reading the manual… you lose health for each use….
The game offers some power up with beams and lasers and a P sign to upgrade the weapons. You can also replenish your health picking up some power ups. This makes the game a bit more easier as you only have one life to play or else a game over with your score. You can continue what stage you’re in but at the very beginning. The stages have some alternation as the first stage is a scroll shoot ‘em up and the second stage is a vertical “free moving” stage. They alternate every stage and every stage has a huge boss to fight against. After beating the game it gives you a text ending and credit just scroll along, nothing too special. Jaleco did a decent job though for a game that’s short.
It’s an 6 out of 10. Short game but some variety gives it some good depth.
Difficulty : 8
This game is difficult as consolation on how short the game is. Enemies come around, obstacles are in the stages where one touch takes your health away. Bosses are hard to beat if not powered up. If anything this game can give multiple game overs but it’s a good thing it brings you back to the beginning of the stage… not really since you really want to replay the stage again? It’s one of those Nintendo games that are difficult but enjoyable.
It’s an 8 out of 10. This game has a bit of difficulty with the 30 minutes game play.
Overall I had fun playing this game again. Review is rather short due to this being a cartridge game but nonetheless this was a surprisingly enjoyable experience I had when I first played it all these years ago. It’s definitely one to pick up if you like a bit of a challenge and a quick fix of gameplay from the gameboy era.
My rating : 8.5 out of 10
Review rating : 7.3 out of 10.
