camkunimura : it's a good thing that you want to talk about it, the last thing you want to do now is shut yourself away from other people. My grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year, after a horrific battle with pancreatic cancer(seriously, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy), she died in August. We were really close and I spent a lot of time with her near the end before they put her under anesthesia at the hospice house where she died. I found out yesterday that a childhood friend of mine was murdered, shot in the head because they wanted his money, I'm absolutely gutted and I've spent my whole day on the internet trying to not focus too much on it. The hardest part of death is the gaping hole that's left where the people you loved more than anything used to fit. Watching the ones we love pass away is the hardest thing we as humans have to do in this life. The most important thing right now, more than anything, is that you don't let that gaping hole swallow you up. Allowing yourself to be overwhelmed by depression is dangerous. You still have people in your life, there are people who want to see you through this. There's absolutely nothing that I can say that's going to soften the blow, but trust me, I KNOW the feeling of being completely crushed by someone's death, most of us do, we all do sooner or later. You're going to make it through to the other side, and there are a great many awesome people here on vizzed if you need to talk. tgags123 : That's a shame, I only ever saw the first back to the future movie, I was planning on seeing the others. Better to find out here than watch the movies and be disappointed then I guess, oh well... |

tgags123 : Well this is what is known as an intellectual impasse, You're argument is simply one of semantics now, I'm not going to argue about what is called what, it's completely irrelevant. I specifically wanted you to explain WHY terminating a 20 week old fetus, which has yet to form a consciousness or an ability of awareness is an immoral thing to do,(and by immoral I mean causing harm to another human being) and your response was basically: fetuses are babies, killing babies is bad, therefore it's bad. It's redundant and doesn't address the issue at all. I seriously doubt there will be any further progress in this discussion, because this is always where the discussion hit's the semantics gutter. You might think that I support the murder of children, but just know I don't have any ill-will towards you, I was just pleased to have a small debate, and wish you well. ![]() I specifically wanted you to explain WHY terminating a 20 week old fetus, which has yet to form a consciousness or an ability of awareness is an immoral thing to do,(and by immoral I mean causing harm to another human being) and your response was basically: fetuses are babies, killing babies is bad, therefore it's bad. I love Qualia Soup's videos, I've seen most of them. Though as much as you try to explain these concepts of critical thinking to people who already believe in supernatural forces that work in the universe, or people who accept pseudoscience. It's REALLY difficult to get people to see where their logical flaws are. I know because I believed in god most of my life, and when my faith became vulnerable to skepticism, I would perform incredible mental gymnastics to try to escape from the possibility that I might be wrong. It's pretty much up to the individual themselves to allow themselves to be self-critical, and accept their own fallacies as fallacies. All that skeptics can do is apply the pressure. tgags123 : Again, I already addressed this, You're calling it a "baby", calling it a "baby" or a "child" doesn't give an explanation of what we're talking about. A baby could be anything from a fetus to a 5 year old. I'm talking about a fetus that is 20 weeks or younger, specifically. You might as well call a fertilized ovum a "baby". I would hope that you would explain to me in detail why using contraceptives is morally just, while terminating a 20 week old fetus isn't? And at what point after conception does it gain the right to it's own life? I would argue that a right to life doesn't start until the CNS(central nervous system) is at least functional. A 20 week old fetus is just as aware of it's environment as a sperm cell is, or an eggplant for that matter, but you never see a picket sign that says "eating eggplant is murder!" outside of a farmer's market... why is that? An eggplant is alive isn't it? Cognition is what makes us human, Cognition is when your life starts, not at conception, and that's my argument. It's an emotional issue, and I would prefer to keep the discussion civil if at all possible. For people saying that adoption is the no-brainer alternative to abortion. They should take into account that 30,000 kids go un-adopted each year, and of course the percentage is rising, as the human population exponentially rises. Hundreds of thousands of children in foster care, and these people statistically have very difficult lives. I think The parents have the right to choose to have a child up to the point until that child has developed the characteristics that we consider to be human, the main one being cognition. A fertilized egg is about 100 microns wide, the size of this period(.). At 20 weeks, a fetus does not feel pain, it has not formed a neural network, much less does it have the ability to know that it exists, there's no need to personify something that doesn't have the traits of an actual person. I think it's immoral to force a child to be born into a family that A) doesn't want it to exist or B) a family that can't properly care for the child. The first step in understanding the issue of abortion is to actually know what you're killing when you terminate a pregnancy. Saying that it's "killing a child" is actually failing to describe what it is. I'm willing to be swayed one way or another, but as far I see it, it's not immoral to terminate a pregnancy. yeah, and sorry about the long, drawn out post, I'm a bit opinionated.... Besides the twilight series(braces for dislikes), what's the most disappointing sequel/prequel you've ever seen? Hands down, for me it would have to be Star Wars the Phantom Menace... The original Star Wars trilogy was one of the first things I remember watching as a child, I loved it! I literally waited my entire life in anticipation for the prequel, only to be traumatized by the excessively goofy, ridiculous abomination that was the phantom menace... George Lucas should be living in a cave right now. Hands down, for me it would have to be Star Wars the Phantom Menace... The worst series of commercials I've seen is for a local(of course) appliance store, the owner's saying is that he "not only stands behind his product... he stands IN them", and the commercial always ends with him standing inside of a clothes washer... of course the only conclusion is that he is insane, and you should at no point enter his store... either those commercials or ANY tampon or condom commercial ever... We're all aware that they exist at the store, no one needs to be reminded of this. of course the only conclusion is that he is insane, and you should at no point enter his store... either those commercials or ANY tampon or condom commercial ever... I hardly watch TV, so the last show that I watched was the season finale of Breaking bad... which was obviously the best show ever to exist. I've always bitten my nails, I've always had some sort of anxiety disorder or another, and of course they're related. My grandmother use to tell me when I was a kid, that if I bit my fingernails they would shred my intestines up, which even as a child I knew was ridiculous. I understand that biting nails can seem weird, but I don't see how some people are just flabbergasted that such a thing occurs. It's not as bad as digging for nose treasure at least. I found this tid bit about the Nazi's understanding of our universe amusing. Many of Hitler's top advisers(maybe Hitler himself) adhered to the "inverted earth theory" meaning they thought the continents were actually on the inside of a sphere, with all the planets and stars at the core of the earth... there was actually a Nazi expedition lead by Dr. Heinz Fischer to a Baltic Island where they attempted to use high powered telescopes... pointed at the sky... to spy on the British fleet. Needless to say the expedition was not a success. Anyway, an actual cool fact about the human body is that no one is really more than 10-15 years old, meaning that the cells and atoms in your body are constantly regenerating and swapping molecules with the environment, the oldest being your osteoblasts(bone cells). Another way you can look at it is that you're actually as old as time itself, in that the matter that you're made of existed at least since the expansion of our universe 14.7 billion years ago!
