xbox360316 : I would say Sega is more reasonable to be highly priced than, say, SNES. This is because Sega went out of business as a console developer a long time ago and most of their best games are in the past. Meanwhile, Ninendo still regularly publishes their SNES titles to new consoles as VC titles. |

BigBob85 : I suppose I see your point. I may be somewhat biased because I actually got my start with C++. I am also generally a proponent of doing things the hard way in order to learn. But you have a point, C++ has the potential to be a major mess for a newbie. |

At the risk of thread necromancy, I'd have to say either Fire Emblem: Awakening or Fantasy Life. Both are a heck of a lot of fun, with a lot of hours of game play potential inherent to them. |

I almost hate sweets myself. I usually won't eat them unless I have to. I also prefer savory (fried chicken, mexican, cheese sticks, steak, garlic potatoes...). Funny thing is, I've always just thought savory meant 'tasty'. I had no idea it implied a lack of sweetness... until I googled it just now. >.> |

imamonster : Most any site that runs ads these days uses AdChoices, you can tell if that advertisement is controlled by AdChoices if there is a little blueish triangle in the upper right corner. All of the ones I have seen so far are, but maybe I am just not seeing the other types Vizzed runs (if there are any). If David is enrolled in some kind of legit ad program for this site, again, it's likely controlled by AdChoices. |

Some reading about the AdChoices program for you may help: http://www.youradchoices.com/control.aspx From what I have seen, the ads people keep complaining about are run by AdChoices. The ironic thing is, it's supposed to protect your privacy and allow you control over the advertsements you see while ensuring that advertisers still get their business. But you can generally expect that any place where these ads appear, and any thing you Google, they are watching you and collecting data about you to show you user-specific ads. You can actually click the ad-choices icon and 'opt out' of any kind of advertisement you see that is offensive to you and you will supposedly see no more ads by that company. That's the theory, but anytime you clean your cookies out you'll start that adventure all over again. On Google's part though, you can use their privacy controls to exert influence over how much of your net surfing impacts the ads you see. If you haven't used those settings at all, it's likely anything from surfing porn to surfing harmless medical-related stuff could have caused it. IgorBird122 : The great crash of the 80s was wrought by an extreme overabundance of mediocre titles and blatant copies that drove away the burgeoning interest in the industry. Given the recent trends toward mediocrity and copy pasta'd video games, IMO, it could still happen again. It does seem less likely now, though, due to games not being a new and uncertain territory. Man, I think you're right though - about which genres dominated when. I still love my platformers though, so much so I bought physical copies again recently. それはだいじょうぶだ。(It's okay!) Sorry for the random Japanese there, I am practicing my basics lately. Haha. But yeah, this kinda ties to my original point. The assumption that we all fit neatly into these gendered boxes can be so prevalent in modern society that it can really create a lot of unnecessary tension for both sexes. There's nothing wrong with a girl who happens to like 'manly' hobbies like hunting or wrestling any more than it is for guys to like bright, fluffy, cute things. IMO, we as a society really need to get over this idea that human nature fits neatly into lovely little boxes instead of being the messy, amorphous, thing that it is. Brain-Splattered: Woah, woah, hold up dude. Lol. You are taking my use of the word freak far too seriously. Nowhere in my post did I ever come across (IMO) as if I wasn't comfortable with the way I am or that I consider it 'bad'. Quite the opposite, I am quite proud of how I am. I would not have even posted that for potentially all of Vizzed to see were I not. Chill, man, sorry that word set off some kind of defense there. ![]() Edit: I would also like to point out, my use of the word freak is english appropriate: According to the Free Dictionary, 1) A thing or occurrence that is markedly unusual or irregular. ...And we are. It's true there is a negative connotation to the word freak sometimes, and it can be easily misunderstood, but I want you to know that was -not- intended. Just to make a point about 'gender' vs 'sex 'here, I am going to show you my Fantasy Life (3DS) character and then...
![]() This is my female huntress Saiba and her kitten Scootie! Truth is, this is not unusual behavior for me in games - I play females all of the time and I have many reasons for that. Many of which, some might consider 'girly'. 1) Girls more often than guys are pretty to look at, and tend to have much cuter modes of expression in games (IE: Cat Emotes and other such things), 2) I like to play 'dress up' and girls 95% of the time get way better clothing and customization options. Guys get... ball caps and beards. ...Yay. It's like developers automatically assume we're all tasteless slobs who would be happy with a box to wear. Gee thanks. 3) The assumptions other guys tend to make about a dude who wears fluffy, brightly-colored attire and has a cat for a pet aren't so hot. It's like, if I am not carrying a big sword with a dragon in tow or I am not dressed like an assassin there must be something wrong with me. 4) My personality is just... really feminine. I don't know how to describe it, but the few times I have actually played as a dude -- most people assume I am girl playing a dude (or that I am gay) so it's almost kind of pointless! Outside of the game, you could not tell me apart from any other guy. I am not flamboyant, or a particularly snazzy dresser, I have a full beard and I am into things like programming and even watching MMA (I used to take Karate, I might add). I do not consider myself either gay or transgender. I am not even bi-curious. My whole deal with playing as a girl online is simply because games give me free reign to express a more feminine aspect of myself that real life would never tolerate. I think I developed more of a feminine side than a lot of guys have precisely because I grew up in a household full of women with no father around. Because I was immersed in a highly feminine 'culture' 24-7, I grew to identify a lot easier with women. This is also the reason, IRL, 90% of my friends are women. I've read scientific studies that state that gender, as opposed to sex, is culturally-defined... but it can be very hard to identify where gender's influence stops and sex's influence begins when it comes to human nature. Finally, here's a question for you: how can you possibly declare one sex is 'this way' and other sex is 'that way' when you have freaks like me running around defying pretty much every stereotype that has ever existed? IMO, I think it's pretty much impossible to. I mean, there are biological inclinations sure - I'll give you that. My female friends are definitely a lot better at having kids than me (LOL), and sure I am far more likely to be able to lift a heavy rock or something but.. apart from that I think the major differences often cited between the sexes just aren't real. ![]() This is my female huntress Saiba and her kitten Scootie! I started collecting SNES and N64 games again recently - though I am only buying ones I will actually play. I bought some off of eBay, but one thing I have learned about getting games cheap is to buy them from Japan. About half of my SNES titles are Japanese and since a lot of them aren't too text heavy, I am not too worried about not understanding it. If you're willing to experiment and/or use guides you can figure stuff out too. My most recent Japanese purchase was Seiken Densetsu 3. ![]() My most recent Japanese purchase was Seiken Densetsu 3. ![]() |

I would add, game developers and their supporters (gamers like us) have a symbiotic relationship. The industry is a product of this relationship, and it really does take two to tango. What I am getting at is, the idea that gamers alone are responsible for the state of the industry isn't right. There is an entire science that the industry professionals apply to try and influence gamers into buying their carbon copies. Those eyeing the balance sheets in the upper echelons of these businesses also encourage and even enforce the lack of innovation - because it feels like it's a safe bet to them. Better to pass a carbon copy that you know will probably sell, than to pass an $25,000,000 experiment that you have no guarantees for. This is not a new trend, any time a successful game idea crops up it can and will be ridden for all it is worth. That's just good business. I'm going to tell you straight away: I am somewhat biased, as I own both of Nintendo's current gen machines (3DS and Wii U). I also have a Playstation Vita though. In my personal opinion, of the options given, PC is the best and Wii U is the second best. PC only wins because of the sheer volume of software it has. If we restrict it to machines made for gaming though, Wii U is my #1. This is mainly because I have yet to see any games on the other two that got more than a 'meh' reaction from me (yet). It needs to be said though, PS4 and XBOX One haven't had as much time to build a library yet. In my personal opinion, of the options given, PC is the best and Wii U is the second best. You never 'learn' coding - you just learn to suck less at it as time goes on lol. I know people who've been doing it thirty years who are still learning how to be a programmer. That said, I started about six years ago during university. My first language, of sorts, was DarkBasic - which is actually a scr |

RTS games can be very processing intensive, so you want a language that performs as fast as possible. For that reason, I second the suggestion to use C++ - it is even faster than C# in most cases even though C# is easier to learn. For learning, I recommend http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/ and also Bjarne Stroustrup's page: http://www.stroustrup.com/ - he is the creator of C++ and one of its highest authorities. He even has learning resources (including books he's published) right on his page. I would also add, expect if you're going to make an RTS you will probably need to learn either DirectX and Windows programming or you will need to get your hands on a 'library' (a compilation of re-usable code specifically made for certain tasks) that can handle the graphical stuff. If you're not as interested in programming as making a game though, I recommend you wash your hands of trying to make games the hard way and learn to use a game making package like DarkBasic Pro or Game Maker Studio. Both are available for free.
