This has been another game I have been wanting to review for an even longer time than my previous review for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Game Gear/Master System. This is the Sega Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I feel like this game is quite an improvement over the first game. That game on Genesis was a good game, but there are some little touches that make this game even better. For example, Sonic and Tails both go on another quest to stop Dr. Robotnik. This game was released several days after the handheld version in November 1992, and the events of the game take place right after Sonic has rescued Tails from Eggman. Sonic can also do the Spin-Dash in this Sonic game which comes in handy for those slopes you had to backtrack across the level just to get through before.

I got to play this game at the same place I played a lot of video games when I was a kid throughout 1992-94, and that was with 2 of the kids in my neighborhood on their Genesis. I got to play quite a lot of games growing up like: Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, the 3 Mario Land games on Gameboy, Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars, and even (the last video game of my childhood) Donkey Kong Country.

Sonic was another series I was a big fan of growing up despite never owning any Sonic games. I loved the cartoon that came on afterschool and even the one on Saturday mornings regardless of how dark it was. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Sega Genesis is what got me into the Sonic story in 1993. It was around this time, I wasn't as big on Mario as I once was. I'd have to say Sonic gave Mario some competition, and I feel like that was mainly because of this game.

Graphics 10/10: Graphically, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 isn't much different from the first Sonic game. Sonic does appear to have more detail to him this time, but it is barely noticeable. This is probably true for the backgrounds as well. Both games are great looking games with one looking just as good as the other one. I don't feel like there is much to say here that I haven't already said about the previous game. This is where the Sega Genesis made some fantastic looking games that were very realistic and animated.

Music 10/10: One thing all 3 of the Sonic games released on the Genesis had in common was their catchy, upbeat music. Sonic 2 is no exception with a soundtrack that is even better than the original game! I said that the graphics were about the same in both games, and I do think the first game had a pretty impressive collection of songs as well. But, I feel like Sonic 2 kind of blows that game away! Just listen to: Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, Mystic Cave, Metropolis, Robotnik's boss theme, the Death Egg theme, and the music for the Final Boss.

Every song is catchy as hell, and so far, this is the best sounding (with exception to Sonic 3) Sonic game in my opinion. I feel like this has got to be the best sounding video game I have played bottom line! I can really jam to about all of the music in this game. It's the quality of the tracks I just talked about in the above paragraph that make the soundtrack so memorable, and it really brings back memories of playing (and watching my friends playing) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at my neighbor's house. These songs have aged extremely well and will always be in my own personal collection of classic video game music.

Gameplay 10/10: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is just like all the other Sonic games. The object is speed, and you have to get through the levels under 10 minutes while avoiding enemies, bottomless pits, spikes, etc. It's all about memorization and takes real skill. Your first time through it, you'll have problems, but if you keep playing, you'll just get better and find yourself getting faster! It is the same idea as before, and this time around, the idea of speed is driven home even more. I like how there are even more opportunities for Sonic to go even faster than he did before. Those levels (like someone on YouTube named  Exoparadigm Gamer said) focused more on platforming. This Sonic game focuses more on speed, and though I enjoyed the first game's level design, I like the level design of Sonic 2 even better for several reasons.

Tails can play alongside Sonic for this adventure. However, unlike in Donkey Kong Country, he isn't a part of the game. Tails just tags along with Sonic helping him defeat enemies, get rings, etc. The player is controlling Sonic, and Tails doesn't give you an extra hit. The hit system is the same as before, collecting rings and shield boxes are the only two things that can give Sonic an extra hit. Tails can be helpful, but he can also screw you up and get you killed too. There is a way to play the game solo as just Sonic or Tails, but I usually play as Sonic with Tails tagging along for the journey. This is a change for the better in some ways, but it all depends on a matter of taste. Some players might just want to play solo, while others would like the idea of bringing along Tails for the journey.

Another mechanism that is a big improvement over the first game is the addition of the Spin-Dash. This can be done by holding down the Jump Button and pressing Down. Sonic spins in place until you let go, shooting him forward killing everything in his path, flying up hills, etc. You no longer had to backtrack in order to get up the hills like in the previous game, and now, Sonic can get through many of these levels even faster than he could before. This is what makes Sonic 2 a big improvement over Sonic 1 and the other 2 Game Gear games! It gives the player even more of a chance to go fast which also goes great with the design of areas like: Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, and several other stages. This Sonic game is really built on speed but not without getting familiar with the layout of the stages first.

Anyway, the Special Stages work differently this time, but they are still optional. This is where the 7 Chaos Emeralds are located which turn Sonic into Super Sonic. In the first game, this was the only way to earn continues, but this time, the game is more generous by giving you continues when you score a certain number of points at the end of each stage. In order to get in a Special Stage you have to get to a checkpoint with 50 rings and jump up into the swirling cloud of stars that appears after you hit the checkpoint. Once you enter the area, Sonic and Tails are running down a race track containing rings and black balls.

The object is to collect a certain number of rings before Sonic and Tails reach a certain part of the track. If Sonic or Tails hits a black ball, you lose some of the rings you have collected which you need for the next part. If you fail to get the required amount of rings, you'll be ejected from the Special Stage with no rings, no Emerald, and no chance to try again. The stages are pretty hard, and you're very unlikely to get all 7 Emeralds unless you are very experienced with this game or are an expert. The Special Stages are worth doing, but I don't go out of my way to find every checkpoint in each stage so I can play them. However, I do like the concept of Super Sonic, but most players have never gotten him.

Super Sonic is invisible, and the music changes during this part to another cool musical number that really rocks hard! Super Sonic is no doubt worth it if you can get him because he is invisible destroying everything in his path, and he also can run faster than normal Sonic. You do get a little bit better ending by collecting the Emeralds as well. Even without the Special Stages, Sonic 2 (in my opinion) has better level design. That game did have areas like Green Hill Zone that had an upper and lower routes. Here, you get this again on even more zones like: Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin (mainly), Hill Top Zone, and Oil Ocean.

Some reviewers on YouTube, like Exoparadigm Gamer, have criticized Sonic 2 for having stages with multiple pathways. I happen to disagree and really like this concept, and it's what makes Sonic 2 even better than Sonic 1. I loved how Sega carried out this idea in Aquatic Ruin, an area Exo criticized the most. I enjoyed how the layout of this zone was split up into the: land section that looked like something out of ancient Rome or Greece, and the underwater section which was made to look a lot like the underwater ruins of Atlantis. I guess it's a matter of taste with how gamers like their levels which he did talk about too.

Multiple pathways in level design give players more opportunities for exploration in my opinion, and they seem to give players more opportunities to go fast in this Sonic game after they have become familiar with the layout of these stages. I like the new level design in Sonic 2. I found Sonic 1's level design to be kind of boring with no real surprises and not much incentive to go for the Special Stages either. Those levels were all about the level themes and concepts. That part of the stage layout is driven home even more this time but with: more speed, more exciting levels that do more than your typical platformer, and Special Stages that, despite all their problems, do give players more of an incentive to play them. All of these new touches make an already exciting game like Sonic 1 even more exciting and rewarding!

Story 8/10: The story for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 takes place right after the events of the handheld Sonic 2. Sonic has just rescued Tails from Dr. Robotnik, but Robotnik returns and tries to take over West Island and kidnaps Sonic's animal friends again which he plans on robotizing. He has also been building a new station in Outer Space called the Death Egg. He plans on ruling the whole world from this satellite above the Earth. He has also created a deadly robot clone of Sonic called Metal Sonic. Sonic and Tails go on a journey together to stop the mad scientist from world domination and destroy the Death Egg along with Metal Sonic.

The storyline for Sonic 2 is about the same as the first game but with some welcome additions. It brings Tails along for his first playable debut. Dr. Robotnik is trying to take over not only West Island but also the world in this Sonic sequel. Sonic and Tails travel though the West Island to stop him. In the end, Sonic has to travel into Outer Space with the help of Tails and his airplane. The plot isn't all that original, but giving Sonic a sidekick was a great idea. So was giving Robotnik his own giant eggmobile in Outer Space with an evil clone of Sonic! You get a plot that isn't all that creative but does build on the ideas from the previous Sonic game.

Depth 8/10: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis is a little bit longer than the first game taking a little over an hour to complete for experienced players. It consists of: Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, Casino Night, Hill Top Zone, Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean, Metropolis Zone, Sky Chase, Winged Fortress, and the final Death Egg Zone. This game is a good lengthy game with a decent amount of content that never gets old or boring. All the zones in Sonic 1 had their own different themes, but these zones are even more creative and better. Especially, the Death Egg Zone.

Difficulty 8/10: Sonic 2 for the Genesis is a little trickier game than the first game was. However, this game is more generous with extra lives and continues than the previous game. I like how players no longer have to enter the Special Stages to earn continues. They are just rewarded to you whenever you finish a level with a certain score. I feel like the difficulty is pretty balanced, but it is harder for first time players than Sonic 1. It is less forgiving in some ways with the stage design which really punishes you for going fast if you don't know what you're doing. This is especially true for some of the later areas.

One of those areas is Metropolis. Some enemies are impossible to avoid, and there is almost no way to make it through this part without losing a bunch of lives. This zone and Oil Ocean is hard to find your way around also. I remember being stuck on these two zones quite a few times and running out of time because I didn't know where to go. The Death Egg Zone was a joke my first time playing it. There are no rings here, if you take damage, you're dead, and you'll have to restart the whole area again. You'll have to beat Metal Sonic again before you can get another chance to fight Eggman and beat the game.

By this time, you usually are pretty stocked up with lives and continues, and you need them here most in order to get used to the pattern of Metal Sonic and Eggman. With Metal Sonic, you have to jump into the side of him. If you jump on top of him, you'll die! I didn't like this section, and is one part of the game that is badly designed for beginners. How can you jump into the side of him your first time playing this? With Eggman, you have to figure out where to hit him without dying. My advice, just watch YouTube videos! I think this game is very playable, but it took me a while to beat it. It took quite a few playthroughs to get good at this game, but once I did, it was a very fun experience that was even more enjoyable than the first game.

Overall 9.2/10: To wrap it up, this had been a long review, but Sonic 2 on the Sega Genesis is a very good game! It is quite an improvement over the first game in a lot of areas. That was a good game too, no doubt, but Sega was still experimenting with the character and just starting a new series. By this time, they were kicking things into high gear along with 2 new cartoon series based mainly off of this game. Steve Urkel brought Sonic to life, and everytime I play the Sonic games, I think of him! Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the Sonic game that gave Mario some stiff competition, and the two characters were going head to head around this time. Honestly, I still can't decide who I liked better.

Nice work on this review. It's well structured and detailed without dragging on too long.

I never did beat this game without a Game Genie, but I tried my fair share of times back in the day. I only beat it when I did because my dad played around with editing Game Genie codes until he found one that let you transform into Super Sonic with one emerald and no ring drain if I recall correctly.
That final boss area though...ugh. lol

Anyway, keep up the good work, man.
