A couple weeks ago I saw that I had this game hiding in the basement of my Steam library and that the file size was very small so I decided to download it and test it out. I never really liked music based games because I rarely played them until Audiosurf really got me into the genre so I figured that if it was anything like that, I would be happy. Honestly, it was nothing like that, and at the start it was quite difficult, but in general the game was a nice little puzzle. In this game, you are given basically a stream of notes , and you're given these little pieces you can put down that when the stream hits them, they change direction. You need to try to get the stream into a certain bar that fills up and plays a certain note, and once all of them are full, you win that level. Later on in the game as you move up, different kinds of pieces are added as well as colors.
GRAPHICS: 7/10
The graphics are very simple. They are not like the crazy visual experience of Audiosurf, but because of the gameplay of this game, extreme graphics are not needed. Heck, the aspect of the game that looks the best in my opinion would probably have to be the music stream, which is just a series of lines quickly flowing in one direction. The rest of the game is just various colors and shapes, which is fine.
SOUNDS: 7/10
The sounds are pretty good, but are very limited when you start, just to hear the music, you actually need to complete the puzzle, and just doing the first puzzle wont let you hear much. Take the first song for example, you beat the first level but all that does is let you hear one part of the song. Once you beat all of the levels of the song, you can hear the whole song. There is a decent number of songs that you can unlock, some of which are good, but that's all there is when it comes to the sounds really.
ADDICTIVENESS: 6/10
Honestly, I wouldn't say this is the kind of game that you would play over and over. Once you beat a level, I'd think you would want to move on and beat the next level. Unless you really like the puzzles and want to complete them over again, you'd probably just play just the song if you want to hear the song, instead of playing the levels. Don't get me wrong, the game is fun and it's a good puzzle, but once you beat a level you probably wont go back and play it again, and if a level gets impossible to beat, you might lose interest.
STORY: N/A
Im going to leave this part blank because there isn't really much here, if at all. I pretty much said everything that the game is about already, all you do is guide the notes until the make music, and once you do that, congrats, you beat the level, there's nothing more to it aside for more challenging puzzles.
DEPTH: 6/10
Honestly, there isn't much to the game. I just need to talk about the music selection, which only has a handful of songs, with each one having a few levels. Of course some of the levels will be long and will require a lot of concentration but I don't really think that makes up for the number of levels in this case, I was able to beat all the levels of the first two songs in roughly half an hour. If you are really good at puzzle games, you can beat the entire game in a reasonable time span because there isn't really a whole lot, though if you do take your time and like the puzzles, you might be able to make it last a bit longer.
DIFFICULTY: 6
The game starts off nice and easy, pulling you into an environment that you think is comforting and fun, and then BAM, things get confusing. When you first start the game, you're given one music stream, a destination, and a piece that changes direction, but as you move on, you get more and more. Eventually you'll have quite a few pieces that change direction, pieces that do much more than make it go left, right, or whatever. You'll get pieces that change the color, and layouts that make guiding the stream seem impossible. Don't let how easy the game is at the start fool you because you're going to be in for quite a challenge later on.
OVERALL: 6.6/10
Overall, this was a decent game, but it's not the kind of game where you will spend hours after hours playing. Heck, when I first played it, I played for half an hour and then I forgot about the game for weeks. It's definitely fun in little bursts, play a little bit here and there, and it will be fun, but if you try to go all out, it will be a quick game that leaves you feeling like you didn't really do anything at all. My overall grade for this game is going to be a 6.6 out of 10.
