You know, ponies are everywhere these days. From My Little Pony Fantasy 6, to Equestria Bound, to Megamare many of the classics have been ponified. It was only a matter of time before Mario was next, and so here we are. Now I'll keep this review short as I don't have much to talk about and since Super Mario 3 isn't working properly, I'll not be talking about it. This game is pretty much just sprite changes for the characters. Play as Vinyl and Octavia in Super Pony, or as Twilight, Sunset, Trixie, and Derpy in super Pony 2.
Now some contemplates that I with this hack is that the sprites that were changed were only the major characters and not the basic enemies. Goombas are still Goombas instead of something more fitting the hack. Of the enemies changed are Parasprites for flying enemies in Mario 2, Garble for Bowser, Steven Magnets for Birdo, and Sombra for Wart. Another minor complaint is that Trixie is dwarfed in the character select in Mario 2. Only a minor complant as she's perfectly normal in the actual levels, but I thought I'd mention it. Another thing is that the names are the same in Mario 1, being Mario and Luigi instead of Vinyl and Octavia. Really it's just a minor thing as it doesn't really change anything but again, I thought I'd mention it. Also Sombra's hitbox is a bit wonky, I'm not really sure if it's because of the sprite change but it's worth a slight warning at least.
As positives go, It's easier to tell the difference between a poison mushroom and a regular one, and all the sprites look well made as you can easily tell who the characters are just by looking at them (I'm looking at you Dr Discords Conquest). The players sprites were made rather well ranging from adorable filly to awesome and Fiery. And the finishing poses are interesting. Also it's hilarious seeing Octavia's face when she goes down a warp pipe.
I'll finish by briefly mentioning the game as a whole The character changes make sense, and the gameplay is fun. The music is iconic. There are still a bunch to do, as you get a second playthorugh of Super Pony and Super Pony side B for even more levels. I'd say the difficulty is rather high if only for the Lost Levels, if you want to 100% the game without save-states, I pity you. As for story, it's Mario there really isn't one. All and all, if you like ponies this game might be for you but if you've already played Super Mario All Stars and aren't really interested in playing it again then I'd give this game a pass. But, all that said, I look forward to seeing the game finished and I'll finish this review then.
