We need like 50 more of these, then we can trade them back in town for a gem which we give to a gate keeper that leads us to another dungeon where we fight a series of bosses to get the real item. The classic fetch quest, get me this and I'll give you that so you can get something else to help you on your journey. This is a staple of the video game industry especially in Point and Click adventures. Mini-games: A nice addition that breaks up your game with something else. These two things that any gamer has most probably met. Here is a game founded solely on these to things. So how does it do? Well it forgot to put one key ingredient into the game: fun.
Graphics (6): Easily the best part of the game, which isn't saying much. The actual graphics are decent, nothing really groundbreaking or interesting but they work at the least.
Story (1): This story is in a word, boring. It's cliché, shallow and sort. Now, the fact it's so short is both good and bad. It's bad because it means there is very little character introduction, development or anything that would get the players attention. You could literally skip all the text, and the game would change very little because it points out everything you need to do. The movie that this game is based off of is most probably better (if only because you can play something fun on your DS while watching the movie). Also there's very little threat really involved because if you fail in your quest the world will be without rainbows for a whole year (Spoilers).
Addictiveness (2): This game fails to grab the player interest, either through gameplay or story. The gameplay is repetitive and does all it's minigames by the book. We have minigames for: Painting, Racing, Whack a Mole, etc. It doesn't help that moving around feels incredibly slow dragging out this game.
Depth (2): This game is incredibly short, and I mean incredibly short, you could probably finish this game in an hour. Actually, more like 15-25 minutes. You have a trophy gallery for the minigames, the higher the level you unlock is the better the trophy is. This wouldn't be such a problem if it weren't for the difficulty (I'll get back to that) and the fact they don't do anything except for being there, but if you want to waste your time on this then that's your decision.
Difficulty (1): This is the biggest nail in this games coffin, the difficulty or lack thereof. Would you like to play a game, what's 1+1? 3, well you tried good job anyway you win. That's basically the difficulty, insanely easy and if you get it wrong it's still forgiving. How forgiving is it? You can't lose. Or rather, you can lose but it will treat it the exact same as if you won. I played this game twice, once actually trying to beat it right, and once trying to do everything wrong. The difference is that the second play through was shorter, nothing else. Even the race to save the day, if you fail it will treat it like a win and you still move on. This is the final minigame in the game which the fate of the world depends on (Although it really doesn't). This game is a whole new level of hand holding. So there's no motivation to excel because it just drags the game out. In this case, to excel really is to fail.
Overall (2.5): Overall, this game is a disappointment and it's best aspects are that it doesn't look terrible and it's incredibly short. The story is boring, the game has no substance. This games are like a rubber ducky, simple, looks kind of nice but is something you've seen before and is completely hollow inside. This wouldn't be so bad if it was made by someone like Phoenix Games, but it was made by Activision. What's the worst part about this game? The fact that if it wasn't just trying to cash in it might have been interesting. It might have made a decent game if any thought was actually put into this game. Before I end this I would like to compare this game to a fan made one. Story of the Blanks. Story of the blanks is even shorter, with a fetch quest feel, is also very easy, but manages to pull it off. With an somewhat interesting plot and simple gameplay it was actually enjoyable to play. A fan game managed to pull a game about little ponies off better then Activision, let that sink in.
