The timing is perfect. The new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens is right around the corner, so what better time to get into the mood than by playing the new Star Wars Battlefront? The game takes place between the novel Heir to the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back, and you'll be playing as either the Rebels or the Imperials, and fight on classic locations like Hoth, Tattooine, Endor, and others.
Star Wars Battlefront just screams "spectacle" as the lasers pop off your screen, and sounds of explosions blast through your living room. Star Cruisers zip by through the skies at blistering speeds, and the massive map make for intense multiplayer action. The game looks REALLY pretty, and the presentation is amazing. The snow on Hoth glitters in the sun, there are tons of little details such as Ewoks randomly fleeing the scene on Endor, and walking next to a massive AT-AT walker is awe-inspiring. The menus are also slick and user-friendly. While playing, you'll often be accompanied by either some classic Star Wars tunes, or original tracks that are filled with classic Star Wars feel, and the lasers and lightsabers sound authentic. The game's atmosphere makes it really true to its source material.
Still, this game is definitely not without its flaws. The maps are packed with small rubble, where I more often than not got jammed into, making me an easy target for other players. Also, there isn't variety in the game modes to encourage unlocking everything. There are unlockable skins, weapons, and items to use, but you'll need to have the patience to sit through the first couple of matches until you've ranked up enough in order to get some of the better weapons.
Also, even though there are team-based game modes such as Supremacy, where you capture enemy bases and defend your own, the game never rewards you good teamwork. As such, every player just runs around like a headless chicken. Everyone simply rushes ahead, because why would you do anything else? Last thing that bugged me, is the amount of times I got taken out by some person who flew his X-Wing into me. This is a cheap tactic, and the game rewards the player for it by still giving that player the kill. It would've been great if you got a point deduction for killing yourself like most games do.
Sure, it may not be the best multiplayer experience I've ever had, but it at least got me ready and in the mood for The Force Awakens. It could have benefitted from more varied game modes, rewards for teamwork, and some sort of suicide penalty or something, but as it is, Star Wars Battlefront is everything I had hoped for: An intense action shooter where I could live the battles of one of my favourite franchises. For simple pick-up-and-play, I had heaps of fun playing Star Wars Battlefront. Just don't FORCE yourself to unlock every last weapon and skin. The timing is perfect.
