As we all probably know, Asteroids is an arcade game that was originally released at the dawn of the 1980's. And I guess it's pretty safe to say that we all know that there's been a few versions of this classic game released to a few of the home consoles on the go at the time, namely the Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800. These are all pretty good renditions of the arcade game and are all highly addictive games to play.

This leads into the $50'000 question of the day ( not really): Which version of Asteroids would you rather play? Would you rather sit down with the classic arcade version with it's vector based graphics and Jaws inspired musical theme? Or would you rather hunker down in front of your computer or TV and take a stab at any of the Atari console versions with their sprite based graphics? There are no specific answers I'm looking for in particular; I'm just curious to see what people are preferring when it comes to this game.

Also, If there's any other home console or computer versions that exist out there, do not hesitate to let me know. I am always on the lookout for more old school games to play that I missed out on.

Cheers to all my fellow gamers. I'm looking forward to your opinions.

I've always liked the arcade version the most. Most games I'd rather not see with such basic graphics, but Asteroids is an exception. The basic, and as you said, vector-based graphics are my favorite for this game. That's one of the things that made this game so cool for me when I first played it a few years ago.

However, I wouldn't mind playing any of the Atari versions. I'd just much rather play the original arcade version.

PacmanandMariofan : I also dig the Vector based graphics of the arcade game. It's the stark minimalists style that really adds to the game's atmosphere of impending doom. It looks like something out of an astronauts nightmare

.
Having said that, I'd still sometimes prefer the Atari 2600 version because of the different play modes and the adjustable difficulty settings. These add a ton of extra replay value to an already very addictive game. It was also one of the first games I ever owned/played for the Atari 2600, so it also has a lot of sentimental value to it. I think I got it for Christmas one year, not really sure which one. Needless to say, that was a FUN holiday season

Thanks very much for your response. It's always a treat to talk to fellow gamers who are into old school gaming regardless of their age or background. Many cheers and happy gaming.

No problem! I hadn't thought of the graphics that way before. Yeah, talking to people that are into retro games is always fun. That's one of the big purposes of vizzed's forums
