I was walking across a crosswalk earlier (given it was 11:30 PM oh no right?) the cop stopped me with his car right up on me as I was on the other side of the street with his siren-lights on.

I'm used to this from when I was younger so I put my hands up and drop to my knees.

He says go sit on the curb. Later he asks for me ID. so I give him my driver's license....


4 more cop cars show up and they all get out and stand there as I'm sitting on the curb.

Another 30 minutes goes by, and the cop who stopped me says you can go please be safe.

That's literally all that happened? Normally they would search someone or do something, I never heard of them just standing around. They didn't tell you anything other than be safe?

tRIUNE : Must have been a slow night. I swear in my town they hide unless you call them.

tRIUNE : You would think that cops had better stuff to do than that. Sorry to hear they detained you for so long for seemingly no reason.

I'm sure they had some suspicion that had been dismissed at some point. I wouldn't go so far as calling them stupid over it. Probably just routine. Take Vizzed moderation as an example.

zanderlex : Not if they can only suspect. And it's not like police are all that keen in sharing their business with the public.

Frodlex : I've seen and heard police all over doing way more than just standing around when they only suspect somebody.

Frodlex : That being so, you are just speculating. Doesn't seem like they mentioned to him why they stopped him or what he was being detained for, which pretty much is against the law, although cops in the US do it all the time.

Ah, well sorry you had to deal with that.. I haven't run into any cops like that (yet) but I never get out here lately. I'm sure eventually something similar like this will happen to me.

Getting away with what?: Namely the fact that they held him yet gave no reason as to why.

This is all the evidence needed to at least have some small grasp at the situation. And even a small grasp is enough to begin theorizing about the motives of the cops. Why did more show up? The ID is routine. But what else is there to examine about this situation?

Yes, details are incredibly scarce. Facts aren't even given to us. But this is why humans have theories.

Frodlex : I understand that people can have theories. My problem is that your posts aren't making a whole lot of sense. That's basically what I'm getting at.

My original point is that it's against the law for them to detain him for any length of time without letting him know why he was being detained.

I understand that you think that they had some sort of suspicion to stop him. That's obvious, due to the fact that tRIUNE said they stopped him. Thing is, that doesn't make it valid and it also doesn't make it legal considering they didn't give him a reason.

They either need to charge him, or let him go. At least they could have been decent humans as to tell him sorry about detaining him and a vague reason why they sat around for so long before doing anything.

Pardon me here, but where does tRIUNE live, and with all the crap with cops going on right now, I take it tRIUNE isn't white? 

Wow that really sucks and I am sorry that happens. I had something like that happen to me. A cop pulled me over a bunch of times on my way to school. Never gave me ticket and ended up asking for my number it was weird. He called me after I graduated and left a message asking me out. I never called him.

lilythetigerkity : Hey, I wasn't playing any race card. I was trying to get clarification since tRIUNE said in his original post that he was used to this. I am just trying to figure out why the cops did what they did. 

To me it seems obvious that they had were looking for a suspect or someone, and you fit the description at the right time and place. That being said, 30mins long enough that they should of told you what you were being suspected of. I'm not sure if you need to ask, or if they have to voluntarily tell you why you are being detained.

The great majority of cops sure are stupid, no matter where you live. It all starts with some "good" cops coming to your school to give a talk about whatever they want, and then you find them in service being complete idiots.

As LK said, they were looking for someone and took you for that someone. Even then, they should at least say why they detained you, it's not like people can waste 30 minutes of their time for nothing. It's something called consideration, but seemingly a very low percentage of cops know what that means. 

What I can't really stand is that they still wonder why they have some kind of bad reputation. Maybe if they stop giving us proof that they are stupid can change that, but they don't seem to even care.

thing1 : I'm predominately Irish, so yeah I'm white. I was in and out of jail when I was younger (so I was used to being stopped).

All this was just harassment from the cops; I tried asking what I was stopped for, and the guy just said that "you're pushing your luck bro."


I just think the whole thing was stupid, wasting my time and wasting their time when they could have been doing their jobs, instead of standing around for half an hour.
