So, for April Fools I did no real pranks, but for the whole day I walked backwards. A lot of strange things happened, and no I didn't walk in to any one. People get really off put by it. It's strange, people would be literally yelling at me to stop! Anyone have any ideas for why it's so freaky and off putting?

SilverHyruler: Maybe it's because our brains are wired to keep us moving forward, and a lot of people don't have good balance when trying to go backwards? We see someone else doing it and we tend to get our own balance knocked out of whack. I don't really know the science behind it, but I'd say it's along the same lines of people usually being disturbed by seeing a brain uncovered. It's something that Should Not Be, so we get discomfited and uneasy when we see it. 

Personally, it doesn't bother me to walk backwards or see other people do it, but then again, my balance sucks REGARDLESS of which way I'm moving, so I may not have that particular brain trigger? Could also be because four years of being in marching band does something to you. You learn to walk backwards without looking like you're even moving, and your brain just kind of gives up after that.

I'm sure it wasn't because they were afraid I'd trip over them, because at one point I dared a bunch of people to try to make me stop going backwards (really bad idea) and I started to circle around them, swerving left and right, leaning really far back, and I didn't trip. Then things got ugly. One of them kicked me hard in the shin, and two guys grabbed my arms and started pulling. Your idea of how there's some things the brain just doesn't want to see makes sense. It's like how in the movies when demons possess you, and your head starts to spin in circles. Just something really unnatural.

When I was in gym class in middle school, many people walked backwards to be cool XD Now I'm not in gym class so I don't know if people still do that now in my high school.

I wonder if there's anyone that lives in my area that tries to walk backwards a lot. There are probably a lot of people that do that, but I don't see it because I don't pay attention to it.

I sometimes walk backwards, but not often. I only do it to be funny or if someone's trying to prank me from behind me when I'm walking forwards.

Well, I don't think that it's that weird, but if you are in a crowded place where everyone is going forwards, and you just start going backwards, you are going to bump into people and get called names. So, I would see why someone might get mad at you for walking backwards. Now, we all walk in the direction that we can see in. Sometimes, we may walk backwards, but we never will do that forever. Even if we tried, it would take the entire human race so many years. It's like an evolution. I just think that you shouldn't walk backwards for an entire day, because you could have bumped into somebody or fell down something! Oh, that would be just horrible!
